Just looked at the Talpa, and it looks easier to set, is it the same size as the Talpex? and is the quality as good?
-
I was just disappointed that I did`nt have any more Talpex what a great bit of kit. The best thing is that you get a nice clean kill. ( if you know what I mean ).

Never used this trap before, always used Duffus and Traplines with good success. While I have been trapping the local golf courses have been having the odd miscatches due to the sandy soil so I decided to try out the Talpex and bought 20, set them on the course ( one talpex per mole area ) and was quite surprised at the results, caught 15 moles missed 2 and 3 were empty. Am now investing in a lot more Talpex!

They always have a knack of making you feel guilty when you hand them an invoice!

You don`t have to conform to rule if your good at what you do. People will always call you back if you do a good job No mate sorry I'm not a pest controller. I do however set snares now and again but now it's not worth the hassle.
-
You would rather turn down work than go on a course that may even bring in more work?
-
I personally believe that you cannot be taught common-sense, its either in you or not.

Thought it would be interesting to see how people have gained their knowledge as their careers have advanced? Have you gained through certification or been taught elsewhere? Do you see a way forward through certification as it seems to be heading that way, laws etc! I hate the fact that people` have` to be a member of an association and pay yearly fees and have to go on some really pointless courses (still forking out shedloads of hard earned cash) just to say that you are continously learning. Personally I enjoy the courses that i want to do not the ones you would have to do just to gain

The Future, Where Do We Stand As Trappers?
snakey replied to snakey's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I personally believe that if anyone thinks that chemicals and poisons are the way forward then we as trappers have no future ( yes chemicals and poisons play their part in certain circumstances ) to look forward to. We have got to advertise ourselves as the MODERN Trapper in a humane and qualified way. If we keep on accepting the indefensible then there is no point -
Have to admit I only use the duffus and trapline, would`nt be without either. Matt i agree, if your experienced with the duffus, using the other types, isnt essential.Just my opinion , of course !

This is just another typical problem with other companies trying to copy, how are they allowed to get away with this! if we as pest controllers have to conform to the rule surley they must also?
-
Any of you guys use this trap? If so what are your experiences? I have had a varied yet frustrating time with this trap. Use it mostly with squirrels, any tips?

The Future, Where Do We Stand As Trappers?
snakey replied to snakey's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I agree with you Matt that we have a seriously out of date trap approval process, god you have only to look on ebay to see that! There has to be a tighter regime as to which companys sell them and to a high standard, otherwise were going to end up with untrained cowboys killing our industry -

I honestly believe that Scotland will be the blue print for the rest of us as regards to trapping and shooting. -

Found this problem myself, did`nt want to catch the bugger but as soon as the problem was on their door step could`nt wait to get rid. I see the situ only getting worse. Good for us but will legislation allow? -

I know trapping comes with a lot of negativety as regards to the general public, ie do you have to kill it, is there a humane way of dealing with it, a lot of questions asked, as a professional pest controller dealing mainly with rural pest control how do you see our future. Is the government going to come down on us in a big way or is it going to go the opposite way. Do you guys see our job being restricted or maybe not? questions eh? -
Do you bait the tube traps?
-
Good old Fenn eh! I think this will be the no one choice for most trappers

Have to admit I am a big fan of UK Traps ( not to everyones taste ) they have a good variety of traps and I have not had a problem with them. A good variety also ie; rail traps, bird boxes with fens and all seem to work well. Yep, the BMI Bodygrippers are a very versatile trap in the right hands. The trouble is; I'm a child of the Fenn era, and as much as I like to think of myself as open minded, I still really like chucking the ole Fenns down within a simple three sided wooden tunnel. Having said that; I did a squirrel job in some forestry a couple of months ago, and set a coupl

How do you set up your boddygrippers?
-
I like that, would you use that in most situations? what about trapping woodlands?
-
Matt, you say that sometimes you don`t catch with the Kania, how often does this happen? and I take it you have modified your kanias on to the boards to your own taste?
-
Interested to know what different ways of trapping you guys use and what methods and traps you use to catch the old tree rat, especially in the attics (lofts) and out in the woods. I use a variety of traps but my favourite has to be the fenn, and no chinese rubbish either.

I`ve been catching moles for a good few years and have gone through a good few companys searching for the golden trap, all of my avenues have led me to the flatpack, their Duffas traps are of a high quality and rightly so a high catch rate. For my awkward moles I use the traplines which are ideal for sandy soils ( golf courses ) where moles tend to be more sensitive to the traps.

snakey replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Tell me something Matt, how did you charge using strychnine?
