Thanks for all the constructive comments ? like I say it's never been too much of an issue because I just knew they weren't around them but my new dogs coming through are gonna be with me in and out feeding the horses/donkeys, mucking round etc virtually 8 hours a day mixing with various stuff so I'll keep a long lead on for a good while and keep the recall as I always would. I just know my Jack Russell's never understood that bigger animals were dangerous ? well I'm glad anyway because I'm settled on patterdales... Anything smaller than them they can rag to bits.

I'm very much considering patterdales as my next foray into dogs but still considering my options, I've had Jack Russell's in the past but never bothered introducing them to other animals as it wasn't an issue. Just after some experience from you guys as to whats possible and what to expect both off lead and on lead with daily exposure as I live with my animals. Hoping to be able to avoid a horse/donkey stampede trampling sheep and my latest puppy getting disembowelled by a goat.

Absolute pot luck on a trailcam

And now I've misplaced my memory card ? -
So I assume you'd recommend one whether I go .410 or 20.

It's gonna be for getting some birds, rats and rabbits. Bit of snap shooting or decoying etc. Just in and around the stable blocks and relatively close to house. I'm after versatile option, despite having air rifles

Well now I feel totally inadequate with pics like that going around. -
Couldn't agree more, that's my excuse to the missus for such a big gun safe. It's gonna be for a few reasons, start introducing the manimals to shots, but mainly for an option when shooting the bunnies and corvids around the stables and relatively close to the house without disturbing everyone, I shoot a lot with air rifles but I like a different sport at times plus the option of snap shooting. I've got the 12 for when I'm doing a proper job but I would like a hushpower it's just now .410 or 20 and I think the 20 is sounding more versatile.

I'm sold on the 20! Cheers RF boy

?? Fortunately she likes me more than her own kids... Just as I say the horses need to become accustomed, all the horses. She's bloody psychic anyway, nevermind a pin drop, she's probably already tutting for me thinking of another gun and she's 130 mile away this week.
-
I appreciate the time and knowledge mate. So I think I'm convinced by going 20, just noise being only factor that could change it, would the 20 disturb people 70 yards away in a house with subsonics, the animals have to get accustomed to the sounds but the mother-in-law is another matter... that's my final question really and if you think it's not going to be excessive at that distance then I'm sold on a 20.. I just have zero experience with trying to be quiet with me 12 bore.
-
Couldn't agree more. I ain't all that old but been shooting nearly 15 years, which is probably as if I've picked up my first rifle compared to some of you guys, luckily my Dad instilled great respect for my quarry so I certainly wouldn't dream of taking a stupid shot I wasn't sure I could hit and I am a fair shot but nowhere near the level you guys are at with your experience. I make a point to check zero and to murder some paper even if i can't get out at the bunnies just tryna get that grouping to keep shrinking, certainly well within the 5p though
-
Some of the shooting I see on here is unbelievable, pcp's would be my go to if I was commercial but I love the extra sport springs bring and with some of these rifles now when they're nicely fettled are mental in the right hands as above... where can I acquire some of these hands??
-
A 20 makes more sense because I appreciate that it's more versatile and It sounds like I could have cartridges for different uses, What's the cost difference like between feeding each one and buying? I've done a bit of research but with you having both what have you found?
-
Yeah I'm trying to introduce them to it, but we have one skittish horse that is terrible so while I'm of the opinion of deal with it others at home aren't so in agreement, plus it's not so much being in the fields with them it's being next to the stables for example where they can do damage.
-
The way I was thinking yeah I couldn't agree more, and thanks for the advice. Static shooting it is but in the future. 95 for now.
-
Exactly what I'd be after. Very interest in this comparison, didn't consider 20 hushpower, obviously the noise is the consideration because of animals, in particular horses and donkeys who won't appreciate me being out bang bang with a 12. How is the sound difference between the .410 and 20, I imagine as the shooter the sound isn't much different but how is the difference if you're stood say 10 yards and 50 yards away?
-
Contemplating a fully moderated .410 to use with eley 3" subsonics. Have a few potential cases where this would be so useful for me in theory, whats your guys experience with it?
-
Think I might have to sell a couple of toys and trim my rifles down to only what I use.
-
Yeah I don't mind solid but they're wee bit on the heavy side.. I'm setting up a couple hides and baiting stations so the 97 in .177 seems like might be a good shout for accuracy at longer distances and in the hide weight won't be an issue. Just looking for an excuse to splash, always wanted to put a few tins of pellets through one.
-
Haven't dabbled much in fac air even though it'd be ideal for me. Eek.. I'm rather sensitive ? Yeah but I just fancied a change.. on the plus side my rabbit recipes are perfected
-
It's .22, I'm in that club.. although a Hw97 in .177 might be next on the list. Yeah I bought it second hand and loved it but immediately had it in bits, machined myself some Delrin guides etc... Didn't know if write ups were for me but I enjoy reading the ones put up here and you lot really know your stuff it's unbelievable the fountain of knowledge and experience on here.
-
Lurked for such a long time, first write up. Out feeding some of the animals and spotted a pheasant that I thought looked rather tasty so I grabbed my hw95, turns out our new donkeys want me to turn vegetarian as they chased the bloody thing away... spotted this little fella and I love a good stalk. He kept me at bay until his fatal mistake, went into the next field and sat behind a fence post. Could see his rear sticking out but his head hidden, kept low used the opportunity to get within 20 yards, peaked out and the 95 put another down. Love this rifle can't lie, had it over a year now
-
Ah right awesome. Suppose they're not gonna be that far, silly me, with thermal I'm thinking like .243 foxes miles away.. Can't believe I never thought of doing it at night, D'oh. He does look a nice dog ?
-
Nice shooting, how does Koda manage the retrieve? Do you light them up with a lamp? I have nv not thermal but never thought about taking dog out at night. Only actual lamping.
-
cheers
