Fat Man's the son of Mister Bellman and Madame Flint. They created a device to improve quality of dogs.

IMO, Technologies have great influence on hunting practises. If technology improves your abilities (view, ear, speed...), you are able to do more. And thanks to this technology, more and more people are able to do the job. In fact, if a technology don't help you to improve your abilities, you'll never use it. With technologies, you need new skills (how to use it efficiently ?). And obviously you lost other skills (some human skills are now run by technology). So I'm convinced that technologies introduce great changes in hunting practices. Hunting a boar with a bow is definitel

Good topic Leethedog, I feared that such discussion would growing up in my topic.

The push against traditionnal badger hunting is strong. There's a political struggle on this subject. Concerning dog's abilities needed, it depends from three items : what kind of quarry, what kind of place, what kind of search. Some modern terriers are too tough to be used on badger in deep places. Too dangerous for the dog. Here, there's no matter concerning holes. You have to clean the place after a hunt (delay 24 h). A barking dog is less fighter, more barking, less wounds. Concerning Otter, they aren't quarry but protected. Very few in France.

Yes, in French law, you are allowed to use collar in order to rescue the dog after the hunt. The game must be released. But when the collar is on, it's a big temptation to use to find faster and hunt with.

Let me free to hunt without technology assistance ! Please.

Fat man, Personaly I've never owned fox terrier. I've to said the wire haired fox terrier is the most common dog to hunt in earth in France. Smooth coated one is used too, may be less common. Friends have some. http://magazine.chassons.com/lequipage-beausejour/#comment-568916

Yes it is, freedom concerning number of dogs.

Fat man, In my area, I'm alone to hunt badgers with family and friends. So a lot of badgers, I have to kill them. In other places, they hunt a lot and don't kill a lot. Most of badgers are released, specially females.

"...What happens if you get a cave in or dog goes deep out of ear sound and cant be located, would the locator not be usefull piece of equipment then. The point i am making is why put a terrier in unnesesary danger..." I've read the history of Ullswater foxhounds. The great rescue of two terriers, called Badger and Butcher. Great, I love it. If I understood first one dead, second one saved. These guys could be proud. They put terriers in unnecessary danger. Unnecessary things or actions are beautiful.

No guideline concerning young. May be better to give to young dogs a real work for the beginning. Just my opinion.

Without locator, they use barking dogs and cautious. But if cautious dog is too shy, it's failure. Like Neil Cooney said, some use more than one dog (2 or 3 together) or they use terriers in relay. I've seen a lot of teckels or fox terriers in France like these. A bit lazy and really smart. Owners are happy, rarely wounded, they hunt badgers each week-end during all the season. Personally I prefer one dog for one hunt. I don't put two dogs together. So I need dogs highly motivated, a little less cautious. Most of my dogs come from UK. And when they decide to bark , they are marvel

AFEVST (french terriermen association) claimed locator's ban. Unfair and inefficient to protect dogs. It's the same for hunting with hounds, electronic devices or engines are banned. Just man-(horses)-dog-game. In France, some of those who use locator for security, are tempted to use to hunt faster. Temptation to ease is strong. If you are afraid for your dog, don't hunt.

Fat man, mr scent, Difficult for me te answer you, because I dont speak english. But I would be clear on this subject. Locate the dog without collar is became our prefered hunt. When you heard a little noise after two hours searching, it's marvellous. The great problem for a terrierman is to have the right dog for the right job. If the job needs to be a bit noisy, you need a baying dog. I think that locator may become dangerous for dogs. Those who hunt with locators have more problems than those who hunt the old way. It's a matter of dog selection. With a locator you can use dog t

Saturday, we begun the hunt at 10 h morning, finished at 20:30. 2 hours searching, 8 hours digging for three badgers in same place. In that case, it's better to have a dog who's baying.

Yes they are. It's the overall from AFEVST (Association des Equipages de Venerie Sous Terre). They buy in AFEVST shop. This AFEVST shop is on the main game fairs in France. Or by post.

They aren't mine. They belong to friends. These teckels' coats aren't strip off. It's their natural coat.

A good example of licencing and self policing working for all even the prey thank youThat didn't work out for anyone. That is poor practice. Which of you started hunting before 15 years of age? You're telling me in this teen years you were a perfect sportsman? Yeah, right. So now, the uncle, who knew nothing of what a normal 15 year old was doing can't continue as master and the 15 year old doesn't learn sportsmanship but is instead banned from the sport. Are you saying you support the removal of your right to work terriers for what another man or boy does? Do you think anyone should hav

Terriermen (AFEVST) are tougher than police or court concerning badger hunt. Last year, we found on Facebook a little video with young foxes killed without respect. AFEVST had done his own enquirie. Master has been identified, he said he wasn't aware. The video was published by his nephew (15 years old). AFEVST decide to remove the certificat de vènerie of this master. We must be exemplary.

Concerning terrier work on badgers in France, you have to be "maître d'équipage" (Master) recognized by AFEVST (association française des équipages de vènerie sous terre). It need a double agrement : - certificat de vènerie (hunting certificat) delivered by huntsmen (AFEVST). It's for 6 years. You have to prove your abilities, show your tools, your dogs. You sign a convention concerning respect of game, respect of environment, respect of dogs. If you don't respect, the certificat de vènerie could be removed by AFEVST. - attestation de meute delivered for the same duration by State. They

In France you have to learn theory (game management, species, law, environment...) and practise (guns, security) before to pass an exam. No problem. It's proved that problems occurs with the older hunters (they never passed the exam).
