  1. Does anybody keep these little banty's ? Just been searching the web for any eggs / birds for sale, can't really find anything. Any idea's on where i might find some?
  2. All depends on how many / what you want to keep Google image it, plenty of pics on there for ideas. Im going to make some coops out of flag crates and old pallets. Thats for cost effectiveness rather than looks
  3. Thats ok if they do well on the chicken feed then. Just whatever i have read stated it must be 28% protein for starter then 20% for layers. This makes life a bit easier ! Cheers
  4. Im struggling to find quail feed locally, i live in cumbria. Does anybody know a good website to buy from or anywhere in cumbria. Its the protein content that seems to be the issue, people seem to stock a lower protein chicken feed that's not suitable for the quail. Thanks, Tom
  5. Info taken aboard, if broody hens have been tried and tested then thats good enough for me. Incubator it is then, thanks. So what i should be thinking about doing is getting a few good laying birds as mentioned. E.g Brown Warrens And getting a few good meat birds e.g sussex x indian game. Using the bantys to incubate and raise the meat chicks. It sounds like a plan Can anybody recommend a good incubator and brooder for the quail? Wouldn't need to hold loads of eggs, maybe 20 - 30.
  6. Thanks for the replies. Money is a bit of an issue, ive heard the cheap incubators are not worth buying so i thought a banty would do the trick. Better have a re think.
  7. Alright Just wondered if any of you could advice on what chicken to get that would be good for both meat and egg production? Starting off with say 5 birds. I would also like 2 banty hens and a cock, i would be interested in using a banty hen to raise some quail, any ideas which would be a good broody? I like the silver sebrights. I have never kept chickens before, all info will be appreciated
  8. You should really leave it till 1 year old to allow the dog to mature, both mentally and physically. The growth plates need to grow and fuse before lots of work. Also if worked too young the dog could end up with splayed toes and ripped tendons. I didn't start my dog till she was almost 2 years as she was too immature and wasn't ready for work before that. All dogs are different and start at different ages. All i can say is, its better to give them time than to mess things up starting them too soon. Although some people would tell you they started their dogs at 6 month !
  9. Get a whippet from working parents, grand parents, grt grand parents and so on. That sonny dog is from pedigree lap dogs. A flook, it wont guarentee a decent pup. Where do you think most of our working lines are from ? They have all come from show lines at some point. I do believe that Sonny has proven himself to be a very good working dog and if he is good enough for Tony Dent then he must have something about him !
  10. Hi all Just wondered if any of you had any up coming litters of ..................... Whippet x Grey back to whippet ? Or Pure whippets ? Thanks
  11. Have you any more info on the breeding ? Sire and Dam registered names etc ? Cheers
  12. How old are they now? Whats there breeding? How much for papers? Cheers, Tom
  13. Not yet i havn't, but i will be giving it a go at some point. Let me know if you try it before i do !
  14. Quite simple, just get a fajita kit from the supermarket and instead of chicken, use rabbit. Actually think its better than chicken fajita's
  15. What breeding are the lurchers? Collie x whippet ? I love the merle
  16. I was lead to believe 5 mins training every day, i do stop when i see she is board and i do make it fun for her when we do train, cheers
  17. I have a beddy / grey x whippet bitch, she is my first lurcher and is a late starter at 20 month old. Better late than early though eh ! Im not new to ferreting but my 3 jills are last years kits and i like to start them after a year old. As with the dog, i think they need to mature. So yesterday was our first outing of the season. I went up onto the fell with my new team, it wasn't a bad evening, although the fog decided to drop in and caused some visability problems. I got some nets set out and left some holes open. Quite quickly my jills flushed out 2 bunnies, one went back down
  18. I give mine 2 mile in the morning then 5 to 7 mile in the evening. Both times out on the push bike. Does everybody exercise in the morning?
  19. This is interesting, id like to know if it does actually make a difference. My thoughts were that if the dogs stomach was empty then it would obviously be lighter and able to run faster, but couldn't keep going all night as it has no fuel to do it. So i decided to feed mine 1 chicken wing 4 hours before work and then her usual meal when we get back.
  20. Notes taken guys.............thanks Rest was something that was on my mind, like the morning after a good night out maybe the dog should be rested. I suppose the dog will tell me what she wants, it will be pretty obvious if she is fooked !!
  21. Just wondered what any of you do for exercise during the hunting season. I always give my dog 2 good walks / runs a day, building on her fitness all the time. So in season, say if she is worked 2 or 3 nights a week and maybe a days ferreting on the weekend then would you still exercise morning and night in between? She is my first Lurcher and would like to hear some of your opinions. Cheers
  22. I use bullet connectors, 2 males from the lamp, 2 females from the battery and then have used crocodile clips to hook up to vehicle battery, wired through to driving seat then 2 female bullets on end. When your lamp battery dies just hook straight up to car battery
