  1. point taken DS,but numbers would be few and far between, i grew up in a county where i never saw a pheasant or hare untill i left home when i was seventeen, that county was unkeepered and probally had more foxes per acre than any in england (this was before the fur boom in the 70's). so why could'nt they get a hold? i am not anti fox, not anti anything except grey squirrels and mink which just should'nt be here, but an area where the predators are managed goes a long way to helping those that need the balance tipping in their favour, such as those ground nesting birds you mentioned.
  2. heres the story, 2 years ago i was asked by the owner of an estate (2000 acres) to help out with the fox control during the spring and early summer, year 1 produced 60 odd foxes (1st Feb-1st Aug), year 2, 40 odd and this year 20 to date. whilst out checking my wires every morning i think to myself, lot of magpies, might as well set a larson. + 1st year, 40+ last, your'e getting the picture now ar'nt you. having caught a mink or two last back end thought i would start early this year 7 to date. anyway numbnuts now wants me off the estate because i'm "taking over", this from a man who dos'nt set
  3. if you don't do any predator control the answer is no! being a ground nesting species the hens are extremely vulnerable when they are sitting, foxes, badgers, rats, stoats, weasels, polecats, cats, even grey squirels, will all take birds or eggs, and when you factor in corvids and raptors they stand no chance.
  4. you can also use the mirror trick to help catch a call bird at the beginning of the season, when you pop your eggs in just fix a mirror in the back of the cage, believe me it works and speeds the process up.
  5. looks like a good day out. i'm thinking a set of stocks would be a useful garden feature, great place to put my kids when they need to reflect on the error of their ways
  6. are they crows or rooks, if rooks a ladder trap will do for them very easily
  7. just thought i'd put these up, not the best of pics i know but i'm not very good on the technical side of things. this is the biggest mink i've ever caught, 116 magnum bodygrip, 17 inches long not including the tail. it's alongside a full grown rabbit, the girth of it's chest/back was amazing. 3rd one in that location in a week, 1 mile upstream from a trout farm, caught 2 more downstream in same week. thanks to snareman for anything i know about trapping and snaring.

    CATS!!!!

I always blame our local gamekeeper
  9. Rabiteer, everything you said made perfect sense except for the last bit. I kill things every day for a living, using poisons, gas, insectacides, traps, snares, and firearms/air rifles. I use whatever is best for the job. If I have encouraged people to shoot at foxes for the fun of it, then I am in the wrong admittedly, however in certain circumstances in my line of work it is the safest tool for the job and as you said "740 fps whizzing through your brain ruins your day".
  10. Samstheman, that is one great picture, was she hungry
  11. Bullmastiff, to be precise its .240, although i've never seen a rifle in that calibre.
  12. I used to think on .22, but since getting my Air Arms S410 its now .177 for me, use it in the garden or in the field, I have dropped foxes stone dead with it, shoot rabbits at 45 yds, rats and ferals, and it still amazes me how accurate and potent that little piece of lead is. I also have a .22 rimfire, .17 HMR, .243, and a semi-auto but that air rifle has paid for itself and more.
  13. Houndblair, it is worthless, sorry Ragumup, but you've bin 'ad, it's junk. REALLY, PREY TELL TELL because it is an ornamant, no more. the reason you can't get the right note is because it is not an instrument. i've been blowing hunting horns for 30 years and i would'nt even try to get a note out of it. i realise after looking at my post it looks like i'm being a smart ass, sorry i don't mean to give offence. if you want a decent one it would cost upwards of £100. you need to find out who has made it, the names to look for are kohler and h keat.
