    Astanley as I'd said in my first reply I was wondering if there was a different thought process for different types of working dogs, but maybe what you see as a messer is someone who's worried of doing the wrong thing which could ruin years of effort and would rather take 2 minutes to ask on a forum filled with experienced hunters to try work out which action is best before they make the decision. Anyways thanks for your input and good luck to you and your countryside endeavours. I agree with jonnygray, the sofa is no place for a dirty smelly child

    Because I wanted to see of there was a different thought process from different areas for the two types of working dog. For the springer I've been told that it must be kept in a run otherwise it picks up bad habits having free range, but found out afterwards that this person tends to talk through his arse about dogs. For the lurcher a friend has put across a number of reasons for a run, main one being that it gets used to the cold for when it's out lamping, which seems a bit overkill, plus he's got very old school views inherited from his dad

Would it make any difference to how well the dog works etc if it slept indoors and had the free range of the garden during work hours (with kennel for shelter), rather than being locked in a kennel and run over night and during work hours

    thing is a greyhound cross would be too big for getting into all the cover that a proper flusher should get into. i cant find catcher1 on the members list or in the for sale section, any chance of a link or something?

    im looking at getting my first dog but coming a bit stuck on what breed would be best for me i want one for clearing cover/bushing to a shotgun and ideally retreiving and working with ferrets but id also like to have something suitable for lamping rabbits. origionally the beddy x whippet was coming up trumps but i saw a previous topic where everyone was saying theyre not good for training, specially for a first timer. and just seen another topic saying a springer cross wouldnt be good enough at either job. if i had to drop a category it would be lamping which then means getting a s

    ive been told that at about 10-11 weeks they start gettting more teeth through and can start playing up, maybe hes got a sore mouth. mine are making up for it by completely relapsing on their nip training within two days and trying to rip off all the fleshy parts of my hands and arms lol

    ive tried this in the past but found that they sweat in it. and come winter due to it being warm it gets damp and holds the wet. but each to there own mine have learnt already to slowly extract themselves from the bedbox while sleeping if theyre too hot, theyve had it for three weeks now and it only vaguely smells of ferret so should be alright but ill keep an eye out for damp

    i use james welbeloved stuff which is nice and small for my kits. i put about 1-2 tablespoons worth of cold water in a full bowl thats about 2 handfuls of kibble, havnt had a problem while eating yet and when play fighting afterwards they dont have any stuck in mouth. learning the happy medium is the way forward, luckily i found it by accident by the looks of it. from where they climb in the bowl to get to wetter stuff underneath they tend to leave a sort of mush at the bottom that needs cleaning out every couple days

    my kits love this stuff, theyve emptied the bowl in a day a couple of times now. putting a bit of water in the bowl to soften it up seems to help young'uns too

    bearing in mind im a noob too and this is going on what the breeder told me, but they should be in the process of moulting this time of year so as long as they dont go bald its alright

    go to local carpet shops and ask if theyve got old sample books of lino. you got more chance of getting it from small shops on the high street etc rather than the big commercial shops i got 4 books from mine so took the spare to the local ferret rescue

    just about got the ferrets to stop biting the last couple of days, pretty good seeing as they like to play fight with hands and dont put any pressure in the bites the jill has started doing a daft kit version of the weasel wardance the last two days and the hob did it a bit earlier when i was fighting with him lol. still cant get them to poo where i want them to :S
