  1. The day the ban gets lifted will be the day I give up hunting my dogs.

It would be anarchy, have a little think about what would actually happen. Think about the amount of idiots that would run wild as more than ever.

    Not my cup of tea.

 That's the most interesting reply on the thread Artic.

Seriously though, if the ban was lifted it would still only be legal for those with permission. There were no more "cowboys" before the ban than after and I'm sure most of us have done a little freelancing in the past.

  2.

A question for anyone who ferrets alot of the time. How do you catch those rabbits that run along the hedge rows? The dogs were diving in, but the cover was obstructing the dogs from getting a decent chance at them. I noticed you can lose a fair few this way.

I can only guess using longnets on either side of the hedgerows?

A couple of 20ft sections of longnet through the hedge at right angles. You may need to cut out a few twigs to get the nets through but you shouldn't damage the hedge of course.

  3. Been taking the pup Tod to the small farm, now for 3 weeks where they have sheep+cattle. Now he is 12 weeks old, he is starting to take a bit (interest) in them. No prob i thought as Bryn is 100% with Stock(sheep, cattle, horses), it should be easy with Bryn there, as he dont even look at them Great. Got Tod on my left side on the lead, walking to the sheep, Bryn is loose about a couple yards to my left aswell. Yes you are right, all Tod wants to do is feck about with Bryn >:(. So i thought no prob, i will get Bryn to walk behind me or to my right, wrong the think animal kept walking to my left >:(. Itried 8 times to get him switch to the right no way, getting very angry now >:(So i had to tie him to the fence, why i walked Tod by the sheep. either i am thick, or this colliex is prob me. ;D But to be honest i did think it would be ok with a mature dog and pup.Maybe as above (i should know better..??

I bet you always hold your lamp in your right hand and have Bryn walking on your left. If you always heel your dog to the same side it gets sort of "stuck" there.

  4. 24 inches to the shoulder.

This took her about an hour to dig when we were camping.

As a worker, well she's only starting this winter so it's hard to say much yet. She's been ferreting a couple of times and her concentration is good. She's learning to listen and she's ready for bolts.

Lamping is taking longer. She goes down the beam like a rocket then gets unsighted on the first turn. After a few outings like this I took her with my 12 year old collie greyhound and ran them as a pair and she got her first rabbit. She now needs to go on her own again.A bad sign is that when she loses a rabbit in cover she barks at it. I put this down to over excitment and hope she'll grow out of it when she's caught a few.

  5. im not sure what im doing when it comes to up loading images. took a lovely picture on my camera and tried to attach it to another topic but it kept saying that the file was too large??? does any one know how i can make the kb smaller. Thanks

hhmmm i had a problem loading images, when you reply to post it will say browse, click that to get ur images up, when you see the pic you want just click it once but dont double click, then once it uploads then click on where it says attatch this file underneath and it should come up auto matically

yep done that mate it just keeps saying file too large? been and cropped it aswell but still not happining. cheers

You need to resize the picture.1024 by 1024 pixels works on most forums. I use my fuji finepix program that came with my camera but as Stag says you can use image shack. You're better making a resized copy rather than resize the actual picture in case you want to print yourself a good quality copy sometime.

Just mess around for a while and you'll work out how to do it.

  6. Some good advice here. I'd get another pup but I'd still be looking for the stolen bitch. You put a lot of time into her and I'd bet if/when you do get her back you'll be pleased to see her. Best of luck with whatever you do.

  7. Just thought I'd start this thread after reading the beddy/whippets/deer thread..

Just wondering what peoples views were on using a dog to hunt with.

In my opinion, a working dog is there to aid you in the act of hunting. It shouldn't matter if the dog can kill the quarry outright, all it should have to be able to do is hold up the quarry long enough for you (the hunter) to get there and despatch the quarry. I think you should be able to despatch any quarry by yourself if you set out to hunt an animal, no matter what it is.

If your not prepared to do so then I seriously don't think you can class yourself as a hunter, you're just a bloke with a dog.

    Sensible replies please..

This is certainly a great thread Mal.It's restoring my faith in the lurcher scene.:yes: (I agree with your opinion by the way).

  8. I have a first cross collie greyhound. He's 12 years old and I had him out lamping last night. He'd six runs, catching three of them.He doesn't yap and returns when the lamp goes off.

The link shows him when he was younger. The photo here shows him in his bed this morning. He has a bit of arthritis from an old injury in one wrist so he's limping a bit this morning but he still loves going out and never limps 'til he gets home.

  9. Wats barf lyk

It stands for "Biologically appropriate raw food" and I think it tries to copy what a wild wolf would eat. It's based on raw meat and bone (frozen for a few weeks first to kill worms). Some pureed vegetables are added to mimic gut contents.

It sounds like a perfect diet but I must confess I'm too lazy to feed it and too mean to buy an extra freezer. My dogs have to make do with Redmills Racer with occasional bits of meat, fish or bones and some table scraps.

  10. £80 seems OK. It would cost the same or more here. When your dog needs small things doing try going to different vets each time. In my experience some vets charge less if they think you're not very well off. If you find one and they seem to know dog injuries well, stick with them.

  11. I don't agree with Whin about this. In the early days of the "Shooting News" there were far more articles for the dog and ferret crowd. "Pesters Pen", "Lloyd on lurchers" ,"The Warrener","Dargi" etc. and of course Brian Plummer had a few articles in there. Whether or not you agreed with peoples opinions it was always interesting to hear them. One of my favourites of all time was Phil Lloyds discussion with "PC Alec Brown" about travellers. Anyone remember that?

I don't buy it these days as there're only ever two or at most three articles I'd even read and Penny's are usually the only good ones.

  12. just had a quick glance on ebay to check price with the other guy saying they were over £100 they range from £17.50 upto £25 like i paid so they are fairly cheap to buy and a whole range of colours.

But they aren't INFRARED filters. The normal red filter emits visible red light. An infrared filter emits INVISIBLE light as mentioned above. It also cots a lot more money than a red filter.
