  1. SACS? Please elaborate... Do they offer a similar package regarding insurance and legal info etc. ?
  2. How much is .17HMR ammunition? I notice the rifles are slightly more expensive, if the ammo is a similar price I may consider one...
  3. Would a .17HMR take down a fox at range?
  4. Is WMR ammunition as cheap and readily available as .22LR? If so then that's probably what I'll do as long as I can find a rifle, scope and mod within my limited budget. I've seen a good .22 LR outfit, is there a way of securing it before I get my FAC? Would a firearms dealer be able to store it for me? Or my local rifle club? Its too good a price to miss, may even get that and then start saving for a WMR
  5. So I'd be better off getting the .22LR for bunny bashing only? I don't want to cause any unnecessary suffering to anything, nor do I want to rip my dinner in half. I'm just going to have to accept that its different guns for different jobs. I don't yet have my FAC and can't imagine I'd get a CF straight off... I think I'll forget the foxing for now (unless they get REALLY close) and instead save up until I can afford the right rifle to do a humane job. As much as I hate foxes (I'm a free range poultry farmer)I don't want them to suffer. .22LR will be my first purchase, followed by a .223 o
  6. Why wouldn't I get .22LR for fox? It's a perfectly good claibre for foxing isn't it? It seems like by far the cheapest option and appears to have enough power to take down even a large fox at a reasonable range...
  7. Sent mine off 6 or 7 weeks ago, still haven't heard a thing!
  8. Thanks, That's sound advice! Maybe I'm expecting too much from one dog then. I think I'm going to try and find someone who works terriers in my area of North Yorkshire and ask if I can come along, see what I should be expecting of a dog and make a decision from there.
  9. Can anybody recommend a first rifle for rabbiting and the occasional fox? I expect to be looking at Rimfire rather than Centrefire until I'm a little more proficient. Looking to spend as little as possible. It would be used on a 140 acre permission I have but I'd eventually like an open licence. I've been looking at .22 LR semi-autos but would welcome any advice. Would I be better trying for a .243 or a .22-250 for example? I don't really know much about rifles and there are so many different types I don't really know where to start. I assume I'd also have to get the land passed for r
  10. Well I've been offered one with non-working parents and its a lot cheaper... I want a good worker but I'm a Yorkshireman, if I can get it cheaper and it'll do the same job then that's good enough for me
  11. I'm looking for a working terrier to do some ratting, rabbiting and flush out the occasional fox. The main duties will be rabbiting on my new 140 acre permission but I'd rather go for something versatile. Having done a lot of research I'm torn between a Patterdale and a Patterdale/JRT. I already have a collie(spayed) bitch and an Old English (intact) Dog who do a very good job of guarding my farm so I'm going to get a bitch terrier (to save on the inevitable scrapping). What I need to know is:- Am I better going for a stocky terrier or will size become an issue underground? Do
  12. Everybody had to start somewhere... Quite true, but starting by using other pest contollers photos, without asking ,or acknowledgment ,,and putting your own caption to them, is not the way to proceed in my opinion. Would you go asking for permission / touting for business, with photos from this site, showing dead rabbits in them ,but rabbits that were not taken by you, something that was ,somehow not mentioned in the captions? I agree that he's out of order to claim other peoples' hard work as his own. That's not a good way to do business and its unfair on you guys. Maybe you could co
  13. I had the Bettinsoli Diamond and I paid close to £650 for it brand new and it was still in A1 condition when I sold it and I only got £300 for it mate so they dont hold thier price that well..... Bet it'd still fetch £300 though... My point is that if you buy new then you're almost guaranteed to lose money but if you only pay say £300 in the first place then the chances are you'll get your £300 back when you decide to upgrade.
  14. I have an "Armi Bettinsoli" O/U 12g and although it could do with a tidy up I bet it'll still be worth the money I paid for it in a year or two. I bought it as it was a good fit and within my (rather tight) budget. My advice is to buy a second hand gun for your first gun as it'll keep its value fairly well (even if it isn't worth much) and if you knock it around its not the end of the world.
  15. So what you're saying is that at 100+ yards range a .22LR isn't up to much? In which case, if I were to ensure there was say 300 yards between me and any road or public access I could shoot without worries? Or would I still need some kind of backstop? I think I'm probably more likely to go for a .22LR than a .17HMR if this is the case. Just been offered 140 acres permission assuming that I can get my FAC sorted. Unfortunately I don't have endless money so while a bigger gun may be more suitable for a large permission I still have to be able to shoot on my land and my smaller permissions...
  16. a touchy subject. neither the .22lr nor the .17hmr are "ideal" foxing calibers, they will both kill a fox at decent ranges BUT neither are suitble without a backstop!! if there are no natural backstops then the only option is to elevate your position (high seats etc) or to create backstops/lure the to a backstop. many of us will have "opportunistic fox" on our fac for the.22lr. many of us have the .17hmr as a "foxing" on there too, that does not make them the best choice for the job. often "the best rifle for fox is the one you are holding at the time" as long as the power is there to kill
  17. I'm new to all this. Can someone please tell me whether I'd be better off with a .17 HMR or a .22 LR to control foxes on my 3 acres of land. I don't have much in the way of backstops so I assume rimfire is safer to use than centrefire. What is the effective range of these two calibres? I've seen an offer on CZ 453 .22LR and .17HMR which comes in around my price range. Would prefer not to use my 12 bore due to noise but if that's a better method then I'll use that and apologise to the neighbours in the morning LOL! Apologies for hijacking the thread
