  1. im quite keen on getting a terrier for ratting and being in the tractor etc. But i wouldnt want him to go to ground. Will majority of terriers go to ground naturally if they find a hole? :-/ ATB Sam
  2. I live in the middle of the fens. So the land is flat as a pancake. Does the firearms officer have to inspect the land? Its not my land but i have permission on it so would he have to talk to the landowner?
  3. Alright lads, I've been thinking of applying for my FAC (i already have my shotgun cert) but i am a bit clueless on rifles. I would want a rifle mainly for rabbits and the like. Maybe mr fox aswell. Any advice on a suitable calibre and which rifles are relatively low priced. ATB Sam
  4. The main difference is cost. I bought another fourtrak last night. 1992, 42000 genuine miles, years MOT and half a tank of diesel, for £400. You tray finding a decent defender for that price...you wont find one! ATB
  5. horrible little truck to drive on the road. Not terrible off road but no way can a suzuki compare to a defender 90. For a start you can drive a 90 through water up to the windscreen. Try that in a petrol suzuki, you cant! I had a fourtrak as my first car and i loved it. Then had a 90 and it was awesome offroad. But now im after another fourtrak as i love the fact they are simple but bomb proof People will disagree with me about the suzukis but guess im a landie/fourtrak man! (because theyre better ) ATB SAm
  6. They are supprisingly good little trucks off road. Obviously the little engine isnt that powerful and you wouldnt want one if you were just going to use it on the road. Cope well off road due to the fact they are light weight. They are noisey, bumpy and unstable in my opinon. But i know some people love them! Although the engine is small they can be quite expensive to insure as they are very easy to steal! Im only 19 so i know what its like being a young driver. I had a 2.8 non turbo fourtrak for my first car, and the insurance was quite good at £1200. I prefered a powerful diesel engine but
  7. they do tend to have some engine issues though. You must have got an ok one! also he said which is better for offroad, and the disco is much better offroad. SAm
  8. Discovery, defender or fourtrak. If you want a truck, go for a hilux. Navaras and warriors are no good.
  9. yeah i think its got to be a springer. Wont be for a few months though sadly (moving house in a couple of weeks)
  10. Your dog will be fine in the kennel as long as it gets plenty of excercise (and I mean excercise whilst training or working not just running about). My gundogs only spend the puppy stage in the house then never see it again. So how old are they when you kennel them? is it too confusing for a dog to allow it into the house in the evenings for a while so we can bond, then put in its kennel at night? 16 weeks when they go full time to kennels. Why let it in the house to bond when you should be outside playing with it in the garden !!! Fair point! and dont worry

  13. thanks for all the advice. anyone want to offer any advice on the kennelling issue? ATB
  14. Nice looking dogs mate. I must say i do like gwp's. Maybe have one someday... ATB
  15. Well my mate has a sprocker and its a cracking dog. But i've heard it can be a bit hit and miss as to whether they'll be any good, even if the parents are good workers? or is that not the case? Oh and another thing, what are peoples views on kenneling? If i get a springer, would it be ok to kennel it on its own in the yard? Obv the dog would be out of the run alot and i'd be spending alot of time with him. I know its possible to train a dog to be a great worker if it lives inside, but does kenneling it give him more of a sense of place? if you get what i mean! Can a dog be kept outside all d
  16. cheers for the reply. i do like ess. would you say they are 'harder' than the cockers? as in they'll charge through anything i mean.
  17. Hi all, Just wondering whether people would recommend a cocker or a springer for me? I'm 19 and do a fair bit of beating/rough shooting. Not really any standing shooting. I bought a lab to train but she turned out to have no hunting/retrieving instinct which was a shame but she now makes a great pet. What would people recommend out of cocker or springer? iv only seen cockers working, no one on our shoot has a springer. Cheers SAm
  18. What are the benefits of a saluki hybrid? I'm thinking a collie x might be good for me because its got to be trainable, obedient and versatile. Can you recommend any good books? Would a whippet x beddlington be any good for rabbits? Thanks for the replys Sam
  19. Hi there, I'm keen to look for a lurcher for rabbiting. I live in the fens so its very flat. Im only 19 but have been shooting and the like for years (being a country boy :-) ) what should i look for in a lurcher puppy? Also what are they like to train? Will they retrieve a kill to hand? basically i would just like some advice from some one more expereinced than myself. Sam
