  1. We have just had an issue with a starling in a sports hall being used for exams depositing droppings on students.

Thankfullly it exited after a few days.

We looked towards shooting it but found they are no longer covered on any general licence.

I just wondered if anyone knows of any exeptions to allow you to remove birds in this situation.

There must be times when birds not covered by general licences enter food production environments. How do people deal with them.

  2. I used one all last season fantastic piece of kit a vast improvement on the dust stick.

It paid for itself with virtually no call backs on treatments.

The ability to access difficult nest entry pionts, ability to treat horizontally with no reduction in delivery of insecticide and far easier to use than a dust stick at long lenghts.

One of the major issues with either the dust stick or bulb duster is repeatedly decanting insecticide but with the DR5 this is kept to a minimum.

What ever the lenght of the wand you still get same delivery of inecticide.

I had concerns about it blocking up in damp weather but had no issues,

I cut the delivery tube into lenghts to suit each section and just my opinion it is easiers than using the whole 8m tube. 6mm connectors can be baught from any hose repair outlet.

Quantity of insecticide wise it did use possibly a little more than a dust stick but this was compensated by the lack of call backs.

  3. It makes you wonder why the tree bumble bee has been so successfull when it is reported otther bumble bee number are declining.

What ever is there prefereed plant food source must be in abundance.

We charge a call out charge on every job and recieve very little if any negative feed back about the charge.

Customers are made aware of the call out charge prior to visit and also that if activity is bees we will not treat.

In most circumstances when the life cycle is explianed and the fact that the high level of activity is just the emergence of new queens and will subside in a short period customers appreciate the information given.

It never ceases to amaze me how so many people cannot tell the difference between wasp and bumble bees even when you are stood with them and telling them.

I was watching some bumble bees today where the customer thaught there was nest in a hedging shrub. The activity was significant but when i watched them they were going underneath the leaves and feeding on a sap solution coming from the plant. When you got hold of the leaves your hand was covered in the sticky solution. I have never seen this before.

  4. Educating customers is one of the biggest hurdles and as people have said with some it will be a hurdle too far and will lead to lost business. The customers will then look for some one who does not care about regulations.

I see the issue and reasoning behind all the changes but one of the biggest issues is availability of these products to the general public.

You would think in line with the new raft of directives HSE is demanding and a stuardship scheme there would also be looking at the quantities going into the domestic market.

What first generation products are you using ratattack.

  5. The new term on rodenticide labels for use in and around buildings and sewers only brings in to question the useof these products in any location not associated with rodent activity in close proximity to buildings.

There is no specific measurement but this issue is going to cause issues for many people undertaking rodent control.

Working for a local authority and the responsibility under legislation to control rats within its boarders puts a duty on the authority to control the rats but in many locations use of 2nd generation anticoagulats is no

    longer an option.

We recently looked towards controlling rats on farm land with terriers to negate the use of rodenticide.

I just wondered how this issue is effecting people undertaking rural pest control.

Has anyone used first generation anticoagulants and if so how succesfull were they.

Working through an environmental risk assesment rodenticide would always be looked at as the last resort.

But everyone has financial restrictions and how will you price for treatments which could potentially take much longer.

Educating customers is going to be another issue when all they will be concerned about is resolving activity.

  6. my mate sent a collar back with same problem to deben and they replaced it free of charge.

i had a problem with a reciever which was repaired for a fee with excellent customer service.

as regard mk1 to mk3 there is no comparison just some people dont seem to give them an chance and time to get there head round how it works it takes a while.

Once you do though I would never go back.

  7. There is a research project into bed bugs and bed bug treatments which I think is being led by Clive Boase and one aspect they are looking into is who effective all currently available insecticides are in relation to bed bug treatments.

The only issue to get any information you have to subscribe at a cost of 70 pounds.

If this research is done it will be beneficial to all the industry as I personally think some of the claims made about certain insecticides are not correct or the insecticides do not give the same efficacy in practicle situations.

I only hope this research is not clouded by the manufacturers of these insecticide purley from a commercial basis.

  8. Do very little spraying for ants apart from earosol barrier spray with dethlac across door thresholds.

Maxforce Quantum is the treatment at his time of the year.

It is expensive but so effective it more than pays for itself.

It has resolved some jobs in very challenging environments where all other products had little success.

  9. Usually there are 2 different senarios.

Externall nest with forging ants entering premises.

Internal nest which at some stage produce flying ants inside which indicates internal nests.

If you are a proffesional use maxforce quantum where foraging ants are visible inside the premises and at the base of the building around the premises.

    If non proffesional nippon gel.

Gel bait is very effective when used early season when there is little alternative food sources and when nest just become active and ants are looking agressively for food.

The window of oppertunity for gel baits is small and seems to get less every year especially with internal nest with flying ants being seen the last 2 years in early may.

I would target the external areas in relation to the rooms effected gel is classified for use at the base of the building.

In relation to powder the quantity used makes a difference something i learnt on a training day with tony hudson from bayer.

He had an array of all sorts of different brushes for applying thin coatings of powder rather than thick bands.

Thick bands ants sense and aviod but thinly applied coatings they do not.

This works so effectively and there is a potential for ants to carry the powder back to the nests as it does not kill them quickly.

Appling a vey thin coating of powder into the pile of the carpet at wall to floor junction and rubbing or brushing into the carpet has resolved a number of problem jobs for me.

Even on very dark carpets if very fine ammounts are used and rubbed in it is not visible. It is the most residual product you can use.

I personally find water based sprays ineffective.

A prodect called Dethlac which is a laquer based areosol has proved very effective as a barrier spray across door thresholds and based on a laquer is long lasting.

  10. I would like to see a cost for the bed bug heat treatment.

It seems such a simple striaght forward process heat to 46 degrees problem resolved.

The machinery used to generate the heat was on 24 hrs plus some one monitoring it.

I know things are glossed up for the show but who has the time to start looking at the insects under a microscope.

    These shows never show reality.

  11. My ferriting partner has an eight month old kelpie greyhound whippet bred from a first cross kelpie greyhound put to a pure whippet.

He has just started bringing him out on our last 2 outings.

Both days have been freezing high on the dales and the dog never bothered.

We use longnets and the dog never once hit the nets jumping it like a seasoned dog.

    Sound with the ferrets.

At the end of the second day you could see him listeneing and following the action underground.

I have been very impressed with this pup he never wonders and has made about 24 inch with a robust frame and superb feet a pleasure to be around.

  12. On a school site the caretaker has reported a problem with gulls taking food from pupils and they are concerned a pupil will be injured.

Gulls have come on site after breaks to feed on waste for a number of years but there has never been this aggresive behaviour and gulls coming during break times.

They try and manage avialable waste with litter picks after break time.

    Has anyone come across this.

Has any one tried any methods of detering gulls.

  13. Definately a rat the customer has seen it 3 times when lifting the plastic waterfall where it is taking and eating the fish.

The gold fish are 6 to 10 inches long.

As far as the customer is aware he has not seen any dead fish so we presume the rat is catching them.

You live and learn in this job thats for sure.

When it has left the area below the waterfall it enters his shed where I now have baits and traps. Rat droppings are visible in the shed.

  14. When starting a new rat job at a domestic the customer reported the rat had now killed 3 gold fish and eaten them.

While there we lfted the plastic waterfall on his pond and below it there was another partially eaten gold fish.

It has also eaten dozens of fresh water snails something i have seen many times.

I have never come across this in 10 years. I have come across them catching and eating frogs in domestic ponds.

The fish are possibly easier to catch at this time of year being sluggish due to cold water temperatue but the rat must be a good swimmer the fish are sitting very deep in the pond.

Just wondered if anyone else has come across this.

  15. used one to stop a lurcher hunting up in the lamp.

the dog just used to loose it and it rectified the problem every time.

the dog was trianed to the whistle but every now and then just started hunting up and defied the whistle.

i only used the collar once each time and the problem was resolved.

the equipment is quality and they recently repaired a collar. the service was excellent.

if you by one you have to keep the collar charged even when not using it or this can lead to damage from the battery this is what happened to mine. they advice giving it a full charge every 5 months wether you are using it or not.

  16. just google pest control leyburn/bedale and you will find a local pest controller.

or go on bpca website they have a list of members for all areas.

I do rabbitting around leyburn and have seen a number of pest control vans over the last couple of years.

If you are seeing rats in the garden look around you property for defects which will allow them in.

be aware they climb like a squirrel so look at shrubbery and things to gutter level.

  17. Speaking to my vet she explained there is 3 aspects to the vaccinations and all aspects are covered on a 3 year rolling program not every aspect every year.

A friend has recently lost a pup to parvo which has led to other dogs and ferrets also succombing to it.

I use kennels now and then so have to keep dogs up to date.

A vet near me does annual vaccinations for 12 pounds.

  18. I have just had my dog vaccinated and i have had to take him back for a second leptospirosis vaccination{weils disease from rat urine).

She inforrmed me that recently two new strians of leptospirosis have been discovered and this is what the second jab is given for.

The second jab was free as the drug company is funding the second vaccination for the two new strians.
