  1. this should only be done with strict supervision as the farmer explaind the ram would seriously damage the dog if left in.

the size of it suprised me.

my friend kevin who arranged this once had a dog which became realy bad with sheep again even though it had been stock broken as a pup.

he did as described with my dog but put the dog in a second time to reinforce the issue.

the dog was not injured in any way but the dog lost all its spirit and would not chase anything after and he had to rehome it as a pet.

this just highlights how carefull to be.every dog is different.

  2. I had a dog which was broken to stock as a pup but the first time out lamping the dog went for sheep after loosing the rabbit.i tried to resolve problem with returning to basics with no success.

My friend had access to a ram on a hill farm and we took the dog to the ram.

with the farmer with us we put the dog in a pen with the ram which initially went to the ram which saw the dog off and we had to immediatley get the dog out or the ram would have done some damage to the dog.

the farmer told us to give it 20 mins then try the dog again.

we did this but it was phisically impossible to get the dog to even go in the pen and he never looked at a sheep again.

  3. Yes it is ok to move them.

there is a club who do it every year.

they are moved from an area where numbers are reduced every year by hare shoots.

you need a long net which is made for netting hares they will bust through rabbit nets and i have seen this happen

the club has specially made boxes the hares have to be literally forced into them they are so tight.

we were told they need to be in such tight boxes to prevent them becoming stressed and die.

original box was borrowed from a greyhound coursing club who used to move hares every year.

  4. As Odesser who was given the advice to use asprin the advice given to me was from dennis beary respected greyhound vet and i bow to his knowledge and experience and will continue to give my dog arnica.

We all strive to keep our dogs fit and assist in any way to assist this and as long as there is no detrimental issue will continue manageing my dogs after work as i am doing as from experience i have had no further problems with acidosis.

It would be great if we could get one off the top greyhound vets to look at this debate not because i think i am right just to assist every one with regard management off dogs after work.

Thanks for a very interesting debate which has not thankfully been highjacked and degenerated into a personal slanging match.

  5. Hyperacute Exertional Rhabdomyolysis

This form of disease is seen following a race or trial of an unfit Greyhound.During the exercise there are three end products of muscular activity:heat, energy output, and hydrogen ions(metabolic acids). the heat produced is carried away from the muscles by the blood flow and the energy output is seen as the work that the muscles perform during the run. Finally, under normal circumstances, the hydrogen ions produced during exercise are neutralized by buffers within the muscle cells and the blood stream.

When an unfit greyhound is sublected to excessive fast work, the is an enormous production of hydrogen ions in the form of lactic acid. This is because the Greyhound uses anaerobic metabolism(energy production using little or no oxygen) in the short races or trial distances of up to 700 to 800 yards. The energy source used by the Greyhound ultimately is derived from glucose and glycogen breakdown into lactic acid in the muscle cells. This production of lactic acid and associated hydrogen ions far exceeds the neutralising ability of the intracellular buffers of the muscle cell, and susequently, the cell wall enzyme systems becomes affected and inefficient. This allows water to be drawn into the cells which subsequently swell to the piont of wall disruption.Cell contents of muscle protien(red coloured myglobin) and electrolytes now leak out into the general circulation(blood) from whence they are filtered and excreted by the kidney. In addition, the swelling of the muscle cells puts a direct pressure on the small vessels that supply their blood and oxygen. The result is a decrease in the essential blood flow to the damaged muscle fibres. This swelling of the muscle cells also precipatates a lack of heat dispersion due to the reduced blood flow, which aggravates the existing process of destruction.

    Treatment

Firstly intravenous fluids are essential to prevent shock and aid the kidney in flushing out(by diuresis) the myoglobin pigments. The fluids used should be balanced electrolite solutions that do not contain lactate as the effected muscle cells will already contain excessive lactic acid.

At he same time it is essential to neutralise(buffer) the large amount of lactic acid(hydrigen ions) in the muscles and general circulation and to prevent precipitation of the myglobinin the kidney tubles. This can be achieved by the intravenous administration of sodium bicarbonate solution(4.2%) at a level of 20ml/kg body wieght.

This should be repeated for 3 to 4 days.

All above is quoted word for word from the book i have already mentioned.

This condition obviously to a far lesser degree takes place every time a dog runs.

From the information it can also be seen where the benefit of using electrolites comes from and i think also why arnica is also beneficial due to its know benefits in reducing muscle sweling.

The advice given by people with regard giving bicarbonate of soda can also be seen.

    Thanks Martin

  6. Firstly i did not say the vet misstreated the dog he treated it for what he thaught was wrong but as i explianed he was a pet dog vet not a greyhound vet and had no knowledge of acidosis or how to treat it.i provided him with information about the condition but he dismissed the information and refused to read it.He believed the dog had stained a muscle because of the pain it exibited when touched.

He gave the dog pain killer.

The dog exibited al the clinical signs of rhabdomyolysis

    very very dark urine

Extreme distress with generalised muscle pain

    High temperature.

unable to touch the mucles especially along the back and hind quarters

tendancy to drag hind legs and scuff nail

in extreme pain when getting up

I was told to keep the dog inside but if the temperature did not drop it would die by the next day.

it is my belief the vet did what he thaught was best for the dog

Prior to this condition the dog was very very sharpe but after significant rest and steriods from a greyhound vet high protien diet as adviced from vet he never recovered the pace as happens to most dogs which suffer the condition.

With regard treatment the book i have told you about goes into great detail how to treat the condition but it is for vets because it involves intravenous application of balanced electrolite solution and intravenous application at the same time of sodium bicarbonate

Cooling of the greyhound for 7 hours by applying wet towels or ice packs over affected muscles.

Application of antibiotics in the infusions

    antiinflammatory to reduce muscle pain

anobolic steriods to prevent muscle wasteage

    mangnetic field therapy is beneficial

high protien meals 3 times a day

    rest for 8weeks

if you do not have the book i would advice you to get it as you seem so interested in the subject it will provide you with accurate informed information not personal opinion.

this conditon effects as i understand unfit dogs and getting the dog to fittness is the difficult part without getting too much work.

how many times have people been going to get a dog back when up jumps another it happens to every body.

As i have asked before sandymere how do you manage your dogs after work what products do you use.

Please give a reply then we all may get some additional information to manage our dogs.

with regard the arnica i am going to get a new container so i can read the label.

    thanks martin

Baught th arnica today contents are

Each pill contains 30 c Arnica Montana

    also contains Lactose and Sucrose.

  7. Arnica Montana - to give it its proper name - is also known as Leopard's Bane, mountain tobacco and sneezewort. Found mainly in the mountains of Europe and in Siberia, this homeopathic remedy is made from the dried roots or sometimes the dried flowers of the plant.

As a remedy, the most popular ways of using Arnica are either as a cream, which can be used on chilblains, sprains and bruises, or as a homeopathic remedy to help encourage recovery from injury or surgery. The remedies are available as pillules, small tablets that are placed on the tongue and sucked or chewed until they dissolve.

    How does it work?

Arnica works by stimulating the activity of white blood cells which process congested blood, and by dispersing trapped fluids from joints and muscles and bumped and bruised tissue. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial qualities and it is these that help to reduce pain and swelling as well as improving wound healing.

If you are researching this subjeect there is some excellent information in the book Care of the Racing Greyhound a guide for trainers breeders and vets written by 3 vets. There is a section which is about metabolic disorders and goes into detail into exactly what happens when a dog suffers from either of the 3 stages of Exertional Rhabdomyolysis or acidosis as we refer to it.

As described above how arnica works this is obviously the reason arnica is recommended as acidosis is a condition within the muscle cells and their breakdown as detailed in the book.

  8. DAM is SOLO

She was a strong running bitch with pace but could also stay.Fantastic strike and took all quarry.Very sensible bitch.Retired due to damaged toe which had to be removed.

Solo's dam was agreyhound.Solo's sire was Woodies Topper.

Topper was a superb dog taking all quarry.

Topper dam was Kevins Meg which was bred by Alan Sankey from Dancer to Joey.Meg was a superb coursing dog and caught hares all over yorkshire and the fens. However far the slips she was always had gears to stop hares and regularily took bigger quarry.

She was a very tough bitch and never suffered any toe or mscle injuries.

Sire to Topper was Barry Farleys dog Jack which was a litter brother to Gary Dickinsons Red.He was an excellent hare killer.

Sire is Dave Dicknsons Max as seen in the September the 14 isue of the CMW.Max is bred out of Tony Griffiths saluki Shady a finalist in 2 Forley Cups and litter sister to Royal Jihad to Gary Dickinsons Rd Forley Cup finalist.

These pups are being bred for our own use.Pups should be born on the 1 november.Pups will be £250 for dogs or bitches.

I have further information with regard the breeding provided by Dave Dickinson going back 5 generations.I have photos of MAX,SOLO,TOPPER and MEG.

If you require any of the above information PM email details and i will send information.

  9. The Arnica Tablets are 30c tablets and i give 2 prior to work and then for 3 days after work. They are Nelsons Homeopattic tablets.I cannot make out products contained from the label due to it being scuffed.

How do you manage your dogs after hard work.Do you use any suppliments. If so what.

Speaking to a Greyhound trainer they use an injectable electrolite solution if their dogs get run too far. They also adviced giving dogs a solutin of bi carbonate of soda and water or milk for maximum of 3 days after realy hard work to help neutralise lactic acid.

I believe this is given intravenally by a vet in acute cases of acidosis.

I had a dog which suffered from acute acidosis and due to poor management by a vet who to be fair had little or no understanding of the condition resulted in the dog never being the same again. After the event i took the dog to Dennis Beary but the damage was done. This is when Dennis adviced the use of Arnica.

  10. As already mentioned a driving licence is very very important.Apart from initial training period when he will be with some one else he will be working alone were driving is essential.

If he gets his Level 2 he should be in a good position to gain employment.

On Jobcentre plus there is currently jobs advertised where no experience or qualificatons are required as full training will be provided.

Personally i would recommend if he can gaining employment with a company who will give him good practical training.

I hope it works out for him it is an excellent rewarding job.

  11. prior to using recharge my dogs would take at least 2 days to recover and get back their vitality after a hard day or night.

the difference when using recharge often suprises me with the dogs recovering the next day.

As well as using recharge between runs and immediatly after finishing i give dogs newtradex once i have given dog a good checkover and rub down when returned home.

Some dogs i have had have been realy reluctant to drink after hard work which newtradex stimulates which i think is important to flush out lactic acid after work.

I was also adviced to give my dogs arnica tablets by Denis Beary the greyhound vet when discussing acidosis with him.He adviced to give arnica prior to hard work and for 2 to 3 days after.

He explianed that acidosis often comes on 2 to 3 days after hard work.

  12. It is my belief that the legislation a number of people have been quoted has now been removed. There is no longer the responsibiliy of the landowner to deal with rabbits on his land. This was i believe changed last year or early this year.So is no longer something Defra will enforce on.

I personally see no problem with relocating rabbits to repopulate the land if the land owner is aware of the situation.

I was a member of a coursing club who regularily netted hares and still do so to increase hare count on their land.

    What is the difference.

  14. Hi Sam just a little advice with regard the situation at ajioning premises.I currently work for a local authority pest control department.Part of my duties involve investgating problems with rats and waste at premises wether it be private or council. The council has a resposibility to investgate and resolve problems with rats and waste providing a food source.I would advice you to contact the local council environmental health department and report the matter. They will have powers of enforcement to resolve the problem. If food waste is not removed from neighbouring properties you will have reoccurring problems.

As others have said peanut butter.

  16. Its possible that there were two small nests side by side and you could only see one?

You wont have two queens in the nest at this time of year.

Just perhaps you were mistaking a larger wasp for a queen? The size of individual wasps can vary quite a bit depending on available food when they were larvae.

Definitely not workers, I killed both of them and had a dead worker for comparison, there was a big difference in size between the worker and the queens.

It all depends what type of wasp it is.The tree wasp produces a much smaller nest and number of workers and so produce queens much earlier.I have and a collegue has already removed nests which are in decline and have produce queens.I have a book called a field guide in colour to bees and wasps blitz editions which has excellent photos and information about wasps.

Due to the weather wasps are much further advanced this year.

I did not treat a nest while the 25 june last year but have treated over 30 already.

  17. bats and bat roosts are prtected and you are risking prosecution if you tamper with either.you can be fined up to £5000 for each bat you kill.

You need to speak to english nature or your local bat society how will give you advice.

  18. Just checked and its kilgerm has the offer, buy 12 tubs get dr5 free. .

if you are looking for a dr5 for wasps nests i would think again.

From experience they use far too much insecticide no matter how carefull you are and are cumbersome.

The dust stick is a far more efficient method of applying insecticide.

It can be assembled in five minutes.the amount of insecticide to succesfully treat a nest is minimal if applied in the right place.

Also the dr5 i used used to suffer from blockages in damp conditions.
