  1. 22lr is the ideal rabbit calibre, marginal for fox. You can pick up a decent S/H cz rifle for £200, use your air rifle 'scope. With a moderator it'll be as quiet as your air rifle, 5-6p/round. 17 HMR's a lot more powerful, a lot noisier and three times the price for ammo, well up to fox out to 150yds.

As it's your first FAC you may well not get your certificate conditioned for fox anyway!

  2. Just out if interest, I have an open FAC, a .22, a .243 and a .308 on it with no conditions.....I am thinking about purchasing a gallery rifle a la Winchester .44 magnum for gallery rifle discipline.

For my variation, can I specify use on fox as well as use it for gallery rifle? What will the old bill say? Anyone with experience?

Especially in the states they take down all sorts large game with these?

Aren't gallery rifles underlever and tubular magazine? Can't fit a moderator so hellish loud for fox!

  3. Dear members,

I have a SGC and have been actively shooting clays in Kingscliff Sports Lodge for last 6 months. Now that rifle shooting is also in my to-do-list, time to ask some questions. Hope you can find time to answer as fit!

1 Does anyone here practice target shooting with .22lr and .243? More interestingly if in or around Aberdeen? Would appreciate if you can gudie further.

2 AFAIK I can do target practice with rifle in proper range only, unless otherwise if I have permission on land which is cleared for that calibre (and offcourse safe in first place). Please correct me if wrong.

3 I think unlike for use of shotgun on club grounds, where you dont require certificate to shoot in the clay ground; I do require FAC to practice on rifle range, require to OWN the equipment and on the FAC. Please correct me if wrong.

For now this will be enough for me.

    cheers

    Sid.

If you google "rifle clubs aberdeen" you'll get links to a dozen or more! There's at least four in the city.

  4. is it ok to keep a moderator fixed to a rifle during transportation, either to a shoot permission or travelling between permissions :icon_eek: have asked a few mates, but have had varying answers..

sorry, ment to ask from a legal point of view :whistling:

    Cheers

Best way to fix a moderator is slip him a tenner.

  5. I have decided to apply for my FAC, but i am undecided on what caliber to go for.

i will be shooting mainly rabbits, up to 100yards, and the odd fox

which caliber should i apply for 22lr or 17hmr?

what are the advantages and disadvantages of both?

the land i will be shooting on is hilly

    any help will be appreciated

    thanks for reading

Apply for both. Tell your FEO you know the difference. If you only get one the choice is made for you!

  6. Just out of interest i have been running the RWS subsonic in my cz .452 .22LR.....do many of you guys use these? i like them for grouping etc but im sure there is faster rounds out there.

When Shooting UK reviewed six 22lr subs they rated Eley tops RWS close second. Fastest was Remington but light weight meant poor penetration.

  7. I don't know much about shotguns, and a lot of what I do know I learned on this forum, but one thing I have noticed is that fit is very important. If the Beretta feels uncomfortable and the Webley swings like an extension of your arm you will shoot better with the Webley. (Now all the guys who do know what they are on about will queue up to tell me I'm wrong! )

  8. thank for all the replies especially mr logic, top man couldnt ask for any better information, im working on memorising it all now, thanks again to everyone though, also as i mentioned earlier i suffered a bit of depression about 3 years ago, i was treated and am fine now i declared it on my sgc and my feo asked about it but it was never a problem, ive heard there a lot stricter on fac do you think this could cause me a problem?

They will probably ask you to give them written permission to contact your GP. Say yes, but meanwhile go to see him/her and get agreement that your depression was caused by your injury and has not recurred for three years.

  9. hi all, ive been on here a few months now got my shot gun license and looking at applying for my firearms soon now to start with it will be at a target club with a 22lr because my feo told me he would not grant me a license for a first application if my reason is field shooting with no previous experience, which i can understand and to be honest could do with the range work anyway, but i am after some advice on different rifle calibers .22lr, 17hmr, 308 ect and what they would be used for, any other info muzzel velocities ect would be welcome too because the feo told me that before he will grant my license i have to show him knowledge on different calibers and muzzle velocities and what they would be used for, so i thought this would be a good place to ask thanks for reading guys. regards adam

Two points here. First your FEO is talking crap. Let's see. Because you have no experience you can't have a licence. Without a licence you can't get get experience. BOLLOX. If you have a permission to use, say, 22rf on land cleared for the calibre then the FEO has no legal right to refuse. Any way it isn't his decision, it's down to the chief constable. Calibre-wise 22lr for rabbits and small pest species, 17HMR likewise plus pigeons and corvids ON THE GROUND. Make clear that you wouldn't even think about taking a shot at a bird in a tree with a rifle. There's more to it all than that but that should get you started. Forget .308 for now though. Go for rimmies then apply for a variation for a centrefire in a couple of years time.

    PS I'm from Leicestershire originally!

  10. have enquired about a shotgun cert from chelmsford police reguarding it being used to dispatch live caught foxes, they reckon a 410 would be just what I need, either double or single barrel, the last time I saw a 410 was around 30yrs ago, as a kid we had a little folding poachers single barrel, have they changed much since then, or does anyone have a better idea?, picture would be good if poss, also, if I get the SGC, can I have more than one gun, or do I need to stipulate what Im having on the ticket

    many thanks

For despatching caged foxes that is!

  11. I may be teaching my gran to suck eggs here, but you state "urban fox control". The fuzz usually say use a sub12 air-rifle in town. Using the .410 would be illegal, surely?

    Ric

holding a SGC for urban fox control, does not mean they have to be dispatched in an urban enviroment, they could be driven anywhere, it was more the "having to rely on others"

also, and I dont know if Im correct or not, something I will ask FAO when they come around, Im sure using a shotgun in an urban area would be illegal, but using a silenced 410 single short for a legitamate humane dispatch in someones garden, is that still in the same class, Im sure if you could prove the reason, then would a "blind eye, be turned" plus the fact, Im not joe bloggs, but a fully quailified pestie

Fair comment bruv. I was just a bit concerned that you might have got at cross purposes with the police about where you would use the gun. You wouldn't be the first person to be misled by a copper who doesn't know the law as well as you obviously do! As you say, you can sort it out when you talk to your FEO. :good:

  13. So, I have been diagnosed with acumulative post traumatic stress disorder. (Far too many dead children at work over a 10yr spell)

They say this was triggered by the birth of my first child and has been getting worse for the last couple of years.

Work have reffered me to the Ambulance trusts own councilor and my own Dr is being brilliant.

The councillor has said I need to get out shooting and fishing more and my Dr thinks all will be well with regard to keeping my FAC.

In fact both he and my councillor say they will write to the local police if there are any problems, as they know I am neither suicidal or homicidal!

    1. how will the police find out I am suffering this stress?

    2. Do I need to tell them?

    3. Will I lose my rifles?

    4. I am a BASC member should I inform them?

Its all a bit much at present!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

    CBW

Your Doctor and Counsellor are required to inform the Police IF AND ONLY IF they think you represent a risk to yourself or others. They are FORBIDDEN BY MEDICAL ETHICS to say anything to anyone if you are not such a risk.

I believe you are an ambulance driver? You might want to tell your union. A mate of mine is a fireman and he developed PTSD for reasons like yours. The union were a great help to him.

  14. Well for a few who have been asking heres the final result of my build....

really chuffed with it so far and today printed .261" with one flyer dur to me not cleaning the oil outta the barrel as when i saw a break in the weather i bolted.... :D

it's in .243 win border 24.5 inch archer barrel,

trigger stoned and polished, breaking crisp at 1 3/4 lbs.

bedded into a mc millian A5 tactical

she also has an invisalbe thread cap for the A-TEC that she wears...

    1 in 9 twist........

I take it you chose the relatively fast twist rate to stabilise longer/heavier HPBTs for deer. I make the RPM at the muzzle over 500.000. It would be interesting to know how it handles shorter/lighter fragmenting rounds. Beautiful piece of kit any which way!

  15. i shot a remington .270 in africa, really liked the gun...are they very common over here and does anyone rate this round? do they shoot pretty flat?

To carry this on as a chat . . .As far as I can make out, the 270 is on the same order of power as the 30-06, .308, or 303 military calibres. If you are shooting in England & Wales you only need it if you are shooting wild boar. If you are shooting in Scotland for large deer - red, sitka, fallow . . . then you can claim to need it. But then why bother? Go for 30-06 and get the bullet weight!

  16. I am wanting to apply for a Firearms Licence, but i was wanting to know - how many acre of land is classed as suitable for a 10/22 ruger rifle.

My parrents own about 25 acre of land and are over run with rabbits, the gun would be to keep them under control. If 25 acre would not be enough land to issue me a Licence then i will have to get permission off the farmer next door, but if 25 acre is enough then i would rather not have to ask him. I was wondering if anyone new if there was a minimum amount of land to issue a licence, I do realise there are other factors to consider, like public footpaths and suchlike and understand every case for application is different, but in your oppinion do you think 25 acre is not enough land.

    Thanks

ps;I have never owned ANY gun licence before.

    Griff -

Whoops. Sorry, I assumed that cos you live with your parents you are in your teens :sorry: I stand by my remarks tho. Given your age, your sense and your level headed approach you should get your FAC. Think about a CZ bolt action as an alternative to the Ruger. Slower but more accurate.

  17. Hi,

I have just bought a Winchester Mod. 70 Kal. 300WSM, and was wondering if anyone out there has some good loading info for me.

the rifle is a stainless steel and gray plastic schaft. I will be picking the rifle up on Friday and will be using it for wild boar so a good heavy bullet would be neaded.

so I hope someone can help. ;)

    Cheers HTS

According to Chuck Hawks the recoil is a lot more than the 30-06, but if you can handle that 9.3x74 the 300 WSM will be a pussycat. Google in "300 WSM recoil" and you'll find some links that may help.

Griff - I'd guess you're about 16. If you show the same level of common sense and awareness about shooting when your FEO visits that you show in your post you are in with a damn good chance. We need people like you. Fingers crossed for you bruv.
