  1. Good lad Baz, is that the only one? Surely there is more than that over there? And what seem to be the best ones the imports? Is there anybody over there with genuine, pure stuff that are worked?
  2. This is for most of the daytime coursers. What pure saluki is throwing the best pups? Or is there even one?
  3. This has been vaguely addressed before, but here is my hat in the ring. Hunted them both, the major difference is escape routes, and obstacles. In Ireland you have twice as many obstacles, gates, sheepwire, roads, blackthorn ditches. A dog needs to be quick thinking with good gears, game as a badger and be able use it's brain. In england it seems to be a war of attrition, where there are little obstacles (on the fens anyway) and where big lung and sheer grit seems to be the winning combination. Six of one half of dozen of the other.
  4. A hare is a hare. Suppose there is a different style to each dog, but was thinking about these dogs without saluki blood, how long would a good course last? How many runs would you get out of a dog? I hear the Irish lads shout about a bitch called "Irish Lady" that has thrown some good pups, and did well on the fens and there was no saluki blood at all in her, although her pups are all saturated with it.
  5. Discussion started in the bar last night The subject being is there anyone running big rabbits with dogs that haven't got saluki blood in them, with success? The mate mentioned he had heard or read somewhere that there was a guy called "Stat" who coursed in the mid nineties on the fens with a line of dogs that had no saluki blood in them, with a great degree of success. I was extremely skeptical of this, as an avid courser I would find it impossible to be taken seriously if the dogs hadn't got the serious wind that the saluki provides. I've seen a lot of dogs (especially in Ireland) Harrier
  6. Throw in my tuppence here, in my humble opinion the dog can't be broke from this, the paradox is that it is a game streak. Had a dog like this, a few years ago minute he lost his tail, he trailed country looking it or others. The dog inevitably became lost, three weeks in a row we scoured the country for him always finding miles from where fact that the dog has had success in this technique, reinforces the instinct. Your best bet is to give him no liberty until your quarry is pushed and hope he ends the course quickly. All the best
  7. Just wondering has anybody had much experience with genuine first crosses? Seen one years ago, a traveller owned it. Beautifu tri coloured wee thing, about 21 inches with a whippet frame and the saluki ears. tied hares up in no time. Dead of winter, afternoon ground got hard, every other dog that was out got busted up, except this little bitch. She levelled three, two solo, one doubled up, no end to this little bitch. Where the hare went it went, never seen one again. Talked to a few people, never heard much about wondered why? Seemed to me it it clicked would be hard to stick.
  8. Sound as a pound mate, just bizarre this gape but as statted it doesn't annoy him.
  9. Have a situation, have young dog eight months with a hairy fleece for a jacket! Older dog bit the pup and left a big enough hole. Brought him to local vet who cleaned wound, and told me it would heal soon enough The pup still has the same size of hole, pretty bizarre as the wound is not infected(quite clean) but still looks as fresh as it was over six weeks ago! It doesn't annoy the pup at all, but me looking at it! Anybody have thoughts on this? The dog's jacket is extremely thick and long.
  10. Don't know what hares you run Frank I've run them both, try running them Irish hares the next few weeks single on good land, where their escape routes are five bar gates, impenetrable ditches sheep wire, roads. then tell me they are an inferior hare. Not taking anything from the brown hare great mammalian athlete : but so is the Irish hare :thumbs-up:
  11. We're speaking night time here, I don't know what type of land or quarry you hunt but a rabbit in Ireland hits the ditch, and mostly burrow in the ditch very rarely it goes through and even if it did it would be no use as it's pitch black on the other side. As regards heart, the bitch on a hare during the day will go through anything.
  12. Alright boys, Asking people's opinions on the following subject - Do lamping with a mate, for the light I run a racy whippet x lurcher cross who on the right ground will fill a bag with rabbits, bitch has pace and pretty lethal strike, but will not smash into hedges or ditches like the mate's Irish terrier x cross. Once rabbit beats her to the hedge, she is straight back to me. A debate has broke out on who is the best suited. His dog has never caught more than mine! And the majority of his dog's kills are in hedges, his argument is that his dog is gamer, my argument is my dog is smarte
  13. Easy enough job Paid? easy as sleeping.ive done it to many of my lamps, worst thing that can happen is the bulb blow.is it a sealed lamp or halogen bulb? The lamp is with my mate, lightforce striker - sure someone knows what bulb is?>
  14. Well lads, need some advice from the hardcore lampers. only recently got a lightforce striker and battery pack, six months ago. I've been on before about this, I brought the lamp to a few places and to a mate who is a spark and he thinks that there is a break in the wiring which is causing the fuses to blow so quickly. You can imagine the madness this is causing, had to cancel at least three or four hunts midway plus the xxxxxxx thing cost me £140! What I need to know is how to customize the lamp so that this doesn't happen, and secondly the most efficient way to operate this lamp as the ne
  15. Went out last week, travelled thirty miles with battery pack and light force striker - fuse blew after three runs Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Went out this week, with battery pack , new fuses, a back up battery, and guess what? Fuses blew on both battery back, and back up battery! Was wondering anybody have such similar problems? And what is the remedy? Noticed cigar socket getting hot, and a funny smell other than that it's not like they were overused, three or four runs each time?
  16. Whereabouts are you oldskool? I'm newry way - never heard the likes of that, that's desperate. Hard enough getting spins in winter, never mind hunting balls of fluff in the summer! Frankie used to do a bit around slemish and what not on the big rabbits, all burnt out now?
  17. Reckon it's shooters, and predators. haven't seen maxi in a long time, in fact the most common thing I seem to encounter is foxes! Of which I have no interest.
  18. Well lads, how is it all going? Just started having a peep about on the lamp three or four times during the good nights, that formerly were hiving, and cannot believe the chronic shortage of rabbits in the north of Ireland. Touched for a few bits and pieces (mostly fields!) but defintely nothing to write home about at all! Was wondering anybody else running into similar predicaments?
  19. Ireland, not far from Dublin. And thanks for your replies. No photos yet, haven't a clue how to work it.
  20. How is it going? New member Bran. Do mostly big rabbits, and occassionally little ones on the lamp. Saluki, Irish terrier, deerhound are the make up of my dogs.
