  1. Its been on BBC Scotland news the last couple of weeks, Goshawks are rarer, than Golden Eagles and Ospreys,

so to chap one with a stick, and put the other in a sack, then remove it, i bet this bird was never released.

the mans an idiot, especially his excuse, i was protecting my Pheasants.

With all field sports under threat, for the public to see on film a rare bird being bludgeoned to death with a stick,

what can you say, I would have given him 6 months not 4.

  2. There is no way, that i usually agree with Cameron, but he said today he wanted to bring in new laws to tighten up new ways that Terrorists can communicate, which i would agree with.

Could not believe that Labour and the Libs blocked it.

  3. There is a happy medium, you don't want a huge Jill, but neither do you want a tiny worker,

If you have a dig on, you want a fert that can hold, the one thing you don't want, is a rabbit dragging it all round the bury.

Come breeding time there's lots of medium size Jills, having Kits, of excellent working stock, usually going free, or cheap.

So no reason for Wild polecat crosses or fancy named runts.

Theres nothing wrong with a normal sized Ferret, they have been used on rabbit control for years with good effect.

  4. in the old days greyhound ferrets was a long lean ferret usually of a good size , you could buy them from exchange & mart & they was put on train for you to collect (in boxes not first class :tongue2: )

they came in a cardboard box Abbot Brothers, I sent away for one years ago, was a young lad with not much savvy,

When it arrived, i put my hand in the box where it immediately latched on to one of my fingers drawing a lot of blood.

  5. Did anyone see this last night, It looked like a really bad sitcom, but was real life,

the Cavendish hotel Torquay. entertainments manager decided to have a Scottish night, as a party of Scots had booked in.

he had a menu that Scots love, deep fried mars bars, and Haggis on sticks, no Scots turned up, but the room was full of English, enjoying the night, where anyone sane would have walked in mins.

i think it was channel 4 set up, how else would they have had a full house.

also on the subject of the telly is, Still open All Hours the worst thing David Jason has done, I find it unfunny, and its full of canned laughter.

  6. I was with Npower and switched to OVO, npower owned us £100, we had to use the Ombudsman it took us a year to get our money, many letters and phone calls, never again.

Happy with Ovo, only had to phone them once, and got straight through, I hate the big 4.

  7. One of perks of long netting just you and a net nice and simple and relatively stress free. No need to complicate things really

Being a solo netter i once decided to take my Whippet X Bedlington with me, I tied her and run out 100 yarder, i then took her up the side on the leash, got to the top of the field and let her go.

I heard a rabbit squeal as it hit the webs , good i thought, but no sign of the Dug, i bantered the field, and reached the net, there was about four in it, then i came across a bundle, at first being a bit stupid i thought it was a fox, but it was the Dug, neatly wrapped up, and not struggling, waiting for me to free her.

that was her first and last night longnetting session.:laugh::whistling:

  8. :hmm:Just seen the segmant of that CW article, on the feasability of lurchers, catching big numbers of rabbits...Those words are nothing new....

In my opinion,..this kind of thinking is exactly the same script as aimed at myself, many years ago,.by Plummer the Writer.

I remember your spats in the old shooting News with the great one, good reading, thats when it was worth buying i use to correspond with your good self, Daergi, and Tommy Mcphee from Caithness.

    Happy memories.

    Ha

We had a wee tiff,.. regarding Collie crosses..

I had been brought up with such dogs,.whereas he was just getting involved with them,..or at least his own romantic image of the ancient type.

I maintained that these fabulous sheepdog / running dog hybrids, the ones that genuinely favour the herding side of the mix,..in behaviour and attitude,.as opposed to those that are little more than virtual running dogs,...will,.in many cases,.start to pick and choose their runs after a severe testing night, on scores of rabbits...

    He dissagreed...

That is fair enough,..each to their own kinda thing....etc,.etc..

The fact that ,.at the time,..I was totaly obsessed with night walking and could actualy, put meat on the bones of my statement,.as opposed to him simply theorising about things,.meant nothing to the fellow.

My opinion obviously annoyed him and prompted him to write,..."Mr Lloyd,..I don't think you know what a real lurcher is"...

Now,.back in the day,.there was a tiny wee smigion of, freedom of speech in the Shooting News,..and my instant reply to him,.really hit the mark...."Dear Sir,..I definitely do know what a real lurcher is,... mine has just paid the mortgage !"

Our legendary hated of each other, twinned with a non-stop, war of words,.. had begun...

The next retort from the wordsmith, was an article, aimed directly at myself, where he thought to ridicule me . His treatise mocked the feasability of me paying the mortgage, from the taking of rabbits and this premise was described and dissected in great detail.

Mathamatical equations, accurately timed responses for retrieves to hand,.cost of fuel,.weather conditions,..etc,.were all given in great detail..The amount of runs per catch ratio, per dog, were graphed out in such detail that the list had my head spinning...

It was an exeptionaly well thought out piece of scientific work,...choc full of data,...so much so,.that even I started to fecking believe it...

Facts were, back in the 1980s,..I was,.for a short while,. paying the mortgage with the help of my lurchers,...but,.silly bollocks had jumped the gun and his foolish jealousy caused him to pen this now,.much copied article..Unfortunately,.the inexperienced lurcher guys who doubt that a keen man with a class dog,. can kill game in numbers, always follow his lead..

How short sighted,..and how disrespectful to the qualities of the ultimate canine...

    How foolishly naive.....

Truth is,... I never actualy mentioned anything,.. about lamping poxy rabbits

  9. its takes time, but you never know whats round the corner, take Labour in Scotland, they thought they had the divine right, to win the elections, then the SNP turned into a major threat and beat them, now according to the poles at this coming elections Labour could be losing more seats to the SNP.

It will take longer in England, but voters down there, must be sick of either the Tories or Labour getting in every five years.

The two of them need a good kick up the backside. will UKIP be like the SNP coming from nowhere, to become the major party in their country, who knows, only time will tell.

  10. i think after reading alot of comments on this thread phil its clear in general the older you become the more less important numbers become unless its your living but just getting out or being able to have a walk has you age makes you has happy just scratching around putting bits up here and there and being happy watching the dog working away is always a pleasure

Spot on post, although when out with my ferreting partner, we take a lot of nets and equipment, i think im now at my happiest, with a single ferret box and a few nets in the pocket, just going out for a mooch.

  11. The numbers game, once i was out netting solo, perfect night, i did two sets with a 100 yarder traditional.

total caught 48 good rabbits, now the bad bit, i was five fields away from the car, and one old post office bag.

after carrying that lot i was knackered, and was not good for the auld back.

  12. years ago i had three freezers, i got 20 pence a rabbit unskinned and guts in, i was lamping, snaring, longnetting and ferreting, and one night a week i would go out with the keeper, he shot, i picked up and opened and shut gates, and he let me keep the rabbits.

now if i go ferreting myself, im happy with three and four, i like to watch the dog working and watching Geese flying over my head, I just feed the rabbits to my dog and the ferrets, im never in a hurry, and being retired i can pick my days.

Utopia. i suppose a few on here would not get out of bed for four rabbits, but i love it.

  13. Just listened to his speech, nothing has changed, he must have mentioned working people at least twenty times, calling the Tories, stating the NHS is only safe with Labour, more schemes for apprenticeships. doing away with zero contacts, nothing new, heard it all before.

looks like its gonna be either Tories or Labour, for another five years, with a coalition.

It will be interesting in Scotland with the SNP surge, and its usually a Labour stronghold,

But Milliband is thought not to be pm material, and the Thatcher era killed the tories.
