  1. Hi All, I was dissapointed today to find a decomposed Roe carcass in a bit of woodland I stalk. I thought the skull looked a bit odd. It seems to have half the nose missing. I was wondering if someone had shot it in the nose but not sure. All legs were ok so probably not an RTC. Also found a badger and fox cub suffering the same degree of decomposition within a few hundred yards, so wonder if someone has been out and about after dark. Attached is photo of skull. I would appreciate others views. Do you think this has nose missing ? Could it have been shot off ? Many Thanks, Firefl
  2. Here's one I made. Bolts onto ladder and your away. Making a double as we speak.
  3. Anyone got any views on the best caliber for woodland/lowland stalking, I'm still undecided and want to trim down the contents of my cabinet but can't decide whether to offload the .270 or .243?
  4. Great ! Many Thanks for your help !
  5. Have I broken some cardinal rule of deerstalking...asking for a game dealer.....why is tumbleweed blowing across this page........surely someone must be able to help? Thanks, Ff

  7. Hi All, Gunshop are going to repair his gun under warranty. Ff
  8. Thanks for all your advice. I can only advise him to take it back. If he doesn't I won't go shooting with him if he takes it ! Cheers
  9. Hi All, Went shooting with my friend this morning . He has just aquired a 2nd hand investarm folding O/U 410 from a gunshop. After firing both barrels at a pigeon he opened the gun , reloaded and closed the gun which immediately discharged both barrels into the ground in front of him. Frightening to say the least as I was about a metre from where the shot went in! Closer inspection revealed that it was possible to open the gun with the top lever without cocking and resetting the firing pins. When he closed the gun both cartridges were fired by the protruding firing pins. He was able
  10. Hi, I have just read the best practice guide for culling of deer injured in road accidents ( Deer initiative ). Use of a shotgun using any shot size is recommended to be used from between 5 - 20 cm for head shots. Has anyone carried out a dispatch in this way. Isn't this going to be very messy or does the shot stay within the skull.? If using AAA or larger the recommended distance is increased to a maximum of 10 metres. Thanks for your help. Ff
  11. I was told by loads of people don't get a .270 it's too loud with harsh recoil. It kicks a bit ( but you'll only notice it at the range ) and yes it's loud . I bought a winchester 70 XTR It's 30 years old and has seen some use but it still groups an inch at 100yds. I have far more confidence in it than my .243. The .270 win is a necked down 30-06. So if you want one get one. I don't think you'll be dissapointed!! Ff
  12. No one said 'accident' it was an 'incident.' If you were caught with 2 Roe and a lamp it would be neither.
  13. Hi All, Thanks for all the useful replies. I just thought it would be good to have a supply of my own so I could pre print them with my Trained Hunter number and fill in appropriate details before getting to the dealer. Laminating might stop the deterioration. Then hole punch & cable tied. Thanks again, FF
  14. My mate offered me 8 legs of venison for £200. Is that too dear ?

  17. Hi JD, Well that's what I hope for but obviously want to do the right thing for the species. Just ordered a copy of Richard Priors Roe management and stalking book from Alibris.co.uk ( Good place for secand hand books if anyones's interested ) I will have a read and hopefully learn a bit more about it. Cheers, Firefly
  18. Hi and thanks for your replies. I have been stalking for a while but only Fallow. I have spent a lot of time out on these farms getting to know them and know both roe does and bucks are there but as the farms are both only about 150 acres If I shoot a buck or two are they likely to be replaced by other bucks? I'm in the north of East Sussex near the Kent border. Is this an area where Roe are generally prevalent or are they still quite a rareity ? Once again and advice gratefully received. I am going to get the Richard Prior book shortly. Cheers, Firefly.
  19. Hi, This may seem a bit of a silly question but I'm relatively new to stalking. I have permission to shoot on two farms ( East Sussex ) and have seen Roe Does and Bucks on one and evidence of a Buck on another. I have heard that as there are few Roe around I shouldn't shoot any. How do I gauge what the population is and can I shoot any bucks without fear of them dissappearing altogether. ? Any advice gratefully recieved. Thanks, Firefly.
  20. I think this shows a total lack of self control. One wonders what your FAC says your 308 is for. i dont hold an F.A.C as of yet it was my friend who took the shot as you would know if you read the full post! does make me wonder if i should ask for this thread to be removed though, if it doesnt say "and other ground game/vermin" under deer and fox next to .308 on my mates ticket (which it very well may do) have we broken the law? cheers hyperion Apologies , Didn't mean to offend. Seems I stirred up a hornets nest. I'm not offended by gory pics. I've seen more than my f
