  1. My hob ferret is called that for obvious reasons !
  2. Through a good friend I got a nice bit of permission to rid some rabbits from thier stables and fields, not a huge piece of land but ok. I could'nt believe my eyes when I got there . . . hundreds of the things, I was looking forward to some good hunting. This is where the frustration set in with my mate telling me that the reason for so many is that he and his wife who's land it is don't like killing animals and the only way they would let me cull was with the air gun ! I am not an ungrateful person and I know lots of people would love this opportunity but I was hoping to give the young lurch
  3. Hi, my jill had 7 kits 9 weeks ago and all the kits have now gone to good homes. She will go back in with the hob, but when I put her in about a week ago because I thought she might enjoy a break from the kits, the hob dived on her and started dragging her round and trying to have his wicked way with her. As you would expect although she is in good health she is still a little under weight and I didnt think looked very pleased with his advances. Will he settle down if I put her back or shall I give her a bit more time ? Colin.
  4. I have 2 cats and 5 dogs, 3 bigguns ! all 5 are scared stiff of the tabby especially my border, the lurcher will chase a bit until the cats stop and turn round then she backs off. The cats were here first but have always been used to the dogs, no one has ever really made a fuss and they all seem to understand. The border really gets on with the black and white, they even sometimes share the same bed.
  5. Thanks for your reply, since having the breed to which I am new I have researched quite a lot through reading and talking to other owners and I have had mixed reports as to wether they are bull breed or not and all beit a long time ago and they are not fighting dogs they still seem to carry that intollerance with other dogs of the bulls. I am keen to learn from knowledgeable people that is why I like this site so much. Colin
  6. Hi all, just a little advice please, I have 2 x 11 month old Bullmastiffs who up until now have lived happily along with the lurcher, border and dobe, yesterday all hell broke loose with the end result being the dog bully putting a few holes in the dobe ! I had better explain the scenario as it stands, the bully bitch is very laid back, the bully dog is entire and obviously starting to find his feet, the dobe is neutered and very good natured, the border is bang in season and not in with them and the lurher is due in season soon and still with them. They were all lying in the garden as normal
  7. 2 hours well spent ! must have been fast and furious, good shooting.
  8. The water vole has got a hairy tail, a much blunter face, its also usually darker and the entrance to the hole will generally be clear of vegetation as the vole will eat it around the entrance. Hope this will help. Colin.
  9. It is estimated that rabbits costs farmers somewhere in the region of 10 million in damage per year ! Its a choice you have to make yourself but it still seems to me that all the hunting we do can't keep the numbers down whenever we do it.
  10. I love jrt's and they love their work, a very game dog but knowing a few over the years I would be very wary of them with very small children as they can be a bit spikey ! It,s absolutely true that it is rarely the dogs fault but they are a little less tolerant than some terriers. Having said all that a good dog man or good family man would never leave a 1 year old with any dog unattended. Colin.
  11. A very good read, a proper working dog mag in my opinion, well worth subscribing to.
  12. Must have been happy with those. 8lb 9oz
  13. Thanks, I have had kits before but I borrowed the hob, this time I have my own and he is staying. Thanks again.
  14. I seperated the pregnant jil from the hob about a week before the kits were born, they are now nearly three weeks old and I was just wondering when it would be safe to put them all in together ?
  15. Thanks for the replies so far, I have read and spoken to people who have also experienced this with their borders. I have fed her a few different foods over 2 years and her breath has always been bad and different from my other dogs but she is perfectly healthy with good teeth. She is a lovely dog with a sound temperament and a good ratter so to me its a small price to pay.
  16. Still very new to this forum and I'm sure this subject must have been covered before, I have looked in the old posts but can't see it. I have a 2 year old border terrier who is very healthy, she has a good diet of raw food and does well at working terrier shows where people tell me she looks great BUT her breath can knock you out at ten paces ! I have heard that it is common in borders. . . Is that true ? and can anything be done ? I don't really want to change her diet and in all honesty it does'nt bother me that much but the wife and kids say she stinks !! . . . I did suggest that they lef
  17. Just a note on owners who cause other peoples dogs to get a bad name, I have a border terrier a lurcher and a dobe who are all very steady with people and dogs albeit a bit excitable as they are only young, I also have 2 9 month old bullmastiffs who are exploring the big wide world. All my dogs live together happily. We took them to a springwatch fair last week where we knew there would be a few dogs and people to get them used to busy situations, all was great and the dogs all really did well until on the way out a couple I could see in the distance had a terrier off the lead, we changed rout
