  1. Deker This link www.thedeerinitiative.co.uk/html/deeract.htm to the Deer Initiative web site details the amendments and changes to the Deer Act 1991. I have given the Deer Initiatives web site as I do a bit for them and know the address of the top of my head. Out of interest it is the Deer Initiative who have been charged with the management, if that is the right word, of the UK wild Boar population in addition to all deer species.
  2. Deker I copy below the latest legislation and have highlighted in red the section referring to section 7 of the act which permits the shooting of deer out of season by those that qualify without a license. However, as arguing is pointless, I will make no further comments on this topic. Charlie DEER RRO 2007.............amendments to the Deer Act 1991. Enable licensed killing or taking of deer during the close season to prevent deterioration of the natural heritage or to preserve public health and safety Where deer are a serious threat for either of the
  3. Deker I am sorry to contradict you but we were I believe talking about the shooting of deer out of season for the protection of crops. I reiterate my earlier post, occupiers and those that qualify under this section (which I believe is section 7 but I may be wrong because I have not bothered to look it up) DO NOT need a license to shoot deer out of season. The 2007 Regulatory Reform you quote makes specific amendments and additions to the 1991 deer act and if you read it thoroughly you will notice that it does not amend the section in the 1991 act giving occupiers the right to shoot dee
  4. Marauding or not, the word does not matter, what matters is that under the act those that qualify as occupiers of land may kill deer out of season under the terms of the act without a license which is what I believe DaveK was talking about. I must apologise if marauding is no longer the adjective used to describe such deer, it always used to be and I presumed it still was. Until the recent amendments to the act it was virtually impossible to get a license for night shooting. Now that the rules have been rewritten somewhat I wonder if it will be somewhat easier to obtain one.
  5. I is illegal to allow a dog to kill a deer. The hunting act only allows upto 2 dogs to flush a deer, not kill it.
  6. Deker Actually "marauding" is the term used in the 1991 deer act. I have 12 bore slugs on my ticket specifically conditioned for such use. No special license is required to shoot marauding deer out of season, one must simply comply with the terms of the deer act 1991 and I stress be able to prove the need. Night shooting is another ball game.
  7. .204 really needs a longish barrel to achieve it's mv, which is why they all have fairly longish barrels. I have been using a Howa in .204 for the past 18 months and have found it to be a highly accurate using Remington 40gr factory ammo. It is a fantastic caliber and great fun to shoot. I have yet to find a shop that does not stock .204 ammo !!
  8. Have a play with the Federal Ammo catalogue or anyone else's for that matter. This is Federal's www.federalpremium.com/ballistics/default.aspx
  9. I'm afraid those big boys are out of my league, I've never seen one let alone tried one. Sorry.
  10. SS You are of course quite correct, 308 must be one of the best if not the best all round deer caliber for use in the UK. However, what concerns me is weather Liam would be granted one for predominantly small vermin and seal with the occasional deer. I suppose only his licensing manager can give a definative answer to that one. The final choice depends on what he is actually going to shoot. If the powers that be are a little iffy about a 308 a 6.5x55 might be the answer..........the choices are endless, which is what keeps us all looking for that elusive caliber !!!
  11. It is some years now since I have had anything to do with culling seals but when I was doing so the hornet was the most common caliber granted and used. FAC grants for seals as the primary use was a hornet and many fishermen had them and used them to great effect. I would have thought that in your case where you want one do all caliber your choice of 22.250 is ideal. If you are not sure if you will get granted one why don't you get some permission for fox/vermin and perhaps roe on the mainland to add a bit of weight to your application. You will then have shown need and should get it g
  12. I would also champion the 6.5x55SE. A very versatile caliber. May I suggest you and your father book a few stalks with an experienced stalker to bolster the knowledge you have acquired with the DSC 1. You will then be able to hopefully see a couple of different calibers in action and gain some practical knowledge of stalking .
  13. I own rifles made buy Sako, Tikka, CZ and Howa. I have ticked the Howa box because I enjoy the caliber the Howa is in the most..........it's a .204
  14. The Home Office Guidelines state Fox, Feral Cat and other such sized quarry as being medium size. I guess Mink would also qualify. If I was you I would ask for small pest species (or vermin) to be added.
