Your lucky if you see em wild, as much as I'm sure they can be a pest. A lot of good reptiles and birds are unobtainable to hobbyists cos of the export laws of australia. Would be a pleasure to open the back door and see monitors rather than the bloomin sparrows eating my chicken feed haha spose if your used to things becomes normal and mundane anyway haha Lovely to see pics like that of wild animals.

Nice dogs, your lucky you can get out with ferrets, All my ground waist high in grass and barley. Slightly Off track question, how do you get the watermark on your photos?

My wee jrt is great ferreting dog, marks follows action etc, but has been known to try and follow ferrets down holes. Small enough to get down rabbit holes to.

I have taken an interest of late in the american bulldog, will probably never keep one, to many other dgs at the minute and always will be, Was thinking about some of the more bully lurchers, do they have a strong gaurding tendancy as well as the ability to hunt rabbits on lamp and with ferrets. I have a bull wheaten greyhound, but she isnt bully looking at all. Works well but doesn't have that look. I am interested in something with a strong gaurding ability and family pet as I have a young family, and think in this day and age it doesnt hurt to have a bit of security. I have a terrier s

My ferrets are in a hutch at a level the dogs can see em, they pay very little attention. Even when they are out for a run the wee jrt will play very gently with em and the others just sit and watch em. Think it helped I got first ferret and jrt at same time as young animals and they grew up together, then when the other pups came along they just learnt from older dog, Who is a delite with the ferrets, when i had a litter of kits and they had excersise she would stand in the middle of em like a mummy to em, and only lift a foot up if she got nipped haha Never had to worry bout dogs with the fe

I use a mk1 deben for ferreting, and want to upgrade to mk3, will the deben terrier collar work with the mk3 ferret locator box or are they two different signals? Maybe i would be better to get the terrier finder box and get extra collars for the mk1?

aye, marking is indicating which holes and buries have rabbits in, each dog has its own way of showing you, i have four dogs and they each do it different. Following the action, yes the jrt will move back and forward to different holes, and most of the time its the one the rabbit bolts from and when it does bolt into the purse net she will pin it down so it cant escape until i can dispatch it, invaluable quality if more than one rabbit bolts. She has also been known to go mad above ground, spinning in a circle, i wasnt sure why, eventually i used locater and found the ferret had killed 5 ft do

Hey Ferreterni, What exactly is ferreting with a dog? Is it when you send a ferret down a hole and the dog waits for the rabbit to bolt? Essentially yes, but the dog also marks inhabited holes, keeps watch for ferrets coming out, mine can follow the action below ground ( not just mine most can) and mine also holds em in net till i can get there. She more suitable than a lurcher for me cos I mainly work heavy hedges and cover.

Terrier work in northern ireland
ferreterni replied to ferreterni's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Strange, how so? I was under the impression that after the terrier has done its job, the dig has been dug and the terrier moved to safety, the fox was dispatched with a shot. I am 100% behind working lurchers to foxes, and am training up a lamping lurcher for this job, Am in northern ireland so is legal still. I jusn't never thought that a big dog was set down onto the fox to dispatch it. I'm relatively new to a lot of the terrier and fox work having mainly done ferreting and bushing. -
Terrier work in northern ireland

thanks. To be honest I thought shooting was what was done, didn,t realize people would put a dog in to have a go, sounds bit pointless to me, would gladly watch a lurcher running a bolted fox tho. Surely shooting em is the best and quickest way to dispatch fox. -
Nice looking dog at the top there, I got a wee bitch, similar to bottom one she around 10"tts, and a great dog for ferreting.

Cheers, Been annoying me for ages, thought it was some technical term for a specific blood line or something, thanks again.

Terrier work in northern ireland
ferreterni replied to ferreterni's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Thanks very much, Pretty much how I thought things stand. Though I wonder how long it will be this way. At the risk of sounding completely stupid and ignorant, what is meant by drawing a fox? Am very keen to get into digging and don't want to make a prat of myself if I fall in with the right people haha -

Terrier work in northern ireland
ferreterni replied to ferreterni's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Thats great, i thought it was ok here, just wanted to double check again. Shame gun laws are more restrictive tho haha And slightly off topic, whats the standing with hare coursing, as I understand it the brown hare is protected in NI at the moment so isn't allowed to be hunted or shot, is this correct? -
Could anyone clear up a legal point for me, I am pretty sure that terrier work to ground is still ok in Northern ireland. Is this the case or does it come under the england wales crap?
