  1. Uphill Doc: I posted earlier: "As you may have picked up from my profile, I'm living in Wisconsin now. Visited Cali a fews times, never lived there. I'm just nuts about all types of hunting." Thought the site was too awesome not to share, not taking credit for anything. Sounds like he's 'living the life' with top notch dogs, quite admirable.
  2. I tried that with mine (DD). He just chased them off. Fun to watch. But I nevegot a shot. I wonder if the stags could stay sighted long enough to catch one (coyote, not a DD) around here. It would sure be a nice surprise for the coyote. ATB I let him chase them, then call him back to me or down whistle him, so I can work the situation. The yote (usually the female) will come back in and try to lure him away. Sometimes she pees on her legs to leave a hotter scent trail and drive my dog nuts. She will bark now and then to let her mate know where we are. He will bark once, maybe twice in
  3. Nice one Erik, classic! "Do it all Drahthaars", mine certainly lives up to that quote.
  4. Been using my Drahthaar here in Wisconsin for years. Thing he needs the most work at is the tendency to whine if the prey seems to be moving off. As with most wires, his prey drive is huge. Great at tracking and pinning wounded. Decoys 'em in closer sometimes, then again, some are wily enough to hang up once I give a command. I try to stick to whistle only as voice definately hangs 'em up more often. Locate dens in spring also. That gets a bit sportin' as they do get a bit feisty when we're close to the den with pups in it. I'm 6'2" and the yotes will barrel in at me hackles up and snarling. E
  5. Sweet pics guys, thanks! I mostly handcall into shotgun range. If they start getting too educated I use my Drahthaar to decoy em in closer and to find the dens in spring. Love the thought of watching bull x stags run em down.
  6. As you may have picked up from my profile, I'm living in Wisconsin now. Visited Cali a fews times, never lived there. I'm just nuts about all types of hunting. Of course we do the most of what's closest to home, what with the current state of the economy and all.
  7. I think a Dogo x Deerhound would be fantastic on coyotes.
  8. Whole breeds of dogs just for treeing squirrels, such as the Feist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feist_(dog) . My DD trees squirrels among other game.
  9. Apple slices during winter.
  10. Thus, "Every animal has enough brains to tan it's own hide."
  11. Brain tanning and smoking works, but it's messy and a bit of work. I usually use Borax. Leaves the hide stiff as a board, which is fine as I mostly use them for tying fishing lures. Never tried Allum, thanks for the heads up that it's caustic.

  13. Interesting that they are edible as here in Wisconsin they are considered nothing but a nasty weed. Tend to take over an area, out competing everything else. Then again, it seems that no one like dandelions, chickory, etc
  14. I've seen coons push my 70lb DDs head under water, had always thought that was just an old wives tale. Coons are tougher than a fox, might be a good idea to have several terriers down at once, eh?
  15. Top 1/3 of the quill is barbed all the way around it. They just keep moving forward. Only thing to do is pull. Highly reccomend having a vet check over your work. My DD hit one this time last year and I pulled the last quill out in Feb or March of this year. He hit it and I held him down and pulled 70+ from him. Leashed him and had my bud walk him out of there, then i shot the porkie. My friend had rope burn on his hands as my DD heard the shot and went at it again. Held him down and pulled atleast as many again. Took him to the vet the next day & she pulled 38 more out of him. Some we
  16. American GWPs are, IMHO, a different breed. Best way I can explain it is that while all GWPs are descended from DDs, no DDs are from GWPs. In the States, GWP owners are part of the AKC and pay $20USD to register the dog. That is the sole requirement for breeding. The DDs in the States are under the FCI, then the VDD, then the VDD-GNA (Group North America) and have the same testing & breeding requirements as in Germany. That was the point of forming the VDD-GNA. Here in the USA, you can find any type of GWP you want: really heavy-bodied wooly types, barely wiry English Pointer types, range
  17. Pointer nailed it pretty well. My understanding is that SMs are rare everywhere, including in Germany. Small gene pool has many drawbacks. Have met 4 here in the states, seemed soft & too close working for my tastes. (I have a 5yr old DD). DD's are high energy and can be a bit stubborn, but if you get 'em the exercise (physical & mental) and stay the top dog in the relationship, then I think they can't be beat.
  18. When gutting, why use a knife at all? Rabbits have the thinnest skin of any game, just pull the skin apart with yer thumbs. Makes me sad to hear of people cutting themselves whilst gutting a rabbit, haven't ya any common sense or coordination at all? And yes, a dull knife is a dangerous knife. Cool parlor trick to squeeze the guts out, what percentage of em end up splatting on yer face??? As for skinning, using a hatchet to take the feet off is hard on an edge, why not hyper extend the joint and slice the tendon? Bingo! Then tube it out.
  19. Wow, if they work half as good as they look yer noggin won't fit thru doors anymore! mine wouldn't!
  20. $16 US/dog for our yearly vacc from local farm supply store. Only need the vet for Rabies, Heartworm Rx & Rimadyl Rx (for when I need to stitch 'em up). And those only because I haven't found another way, yet...
  21. Kate, I'll take a closer look at the regs. However, the WI DNR lists the species I'm most interested in. Mostly out on Public Hunting Grounds during season & Industrial Parks off season, so I don't see much hope in being able to dig out vermin. We sure do see a lot of 'em. Currently contemplating becoming licensed for pest removal and trapping as a side gig and specializing only in the species my dog & I prefer. That might work. Who's the breeder you mentioned? Can you PM me contact info? Borders really seem to be the ticket for me as I am extremely specific about what I want in m
  22. Howdy all, I found this site while looking for a working Border Terrier. I have a Drahthaar who I hunt everything with and is constantly running vermin into their dens. Thought a terrier would turn failure into success. Great site, love to become a terrierman someday. Then I looked into the regs here in Wisconsin and noted that it is illegal to disturb dens in anyway. Also illegal to allow a dog to kill any animal. Man, I gotta relocate! What a bunch of pansies we've become. Coyotes are dragging children off of playgrounds in California (What, 3 attacks in 5 weeks?!) and we sit on our
