  1. Mid afternoon, was a very pleasant 27c, cheers
  2. Promise to take ferret pics next time!
  3. Got back out this arvo with the new crew. Its only the second weekend for both dogs and ferrets and I am well pleased with their progress. Was a lovely day weather wise, only minor hickup I forgot to take any pics of the ferts. My warrigal bitch has picked up the basics pretty quick, and is super keen. She caught her first bolter today, after a couple of near misses, and is hitting the nets hard. Here she is on the job, which is more than I can say for the spoilt whippet Hitting a net. Team talk before the ferts went in. Didn,t know the kid had
  4. After reading hundreds of posts in many topics on this great site I have come to the conclusion that the main rule in the British Isles for many forms of dog hunting is DON,T GET CAUGHT!! When you consider my less than noble convict ancestory it should not surprise anybody that, within sporting paremeters, I fully support this rule, cheers
  5. Get a red setter from an aussie breeder, try and train it to do anything. You will have the equivalent of 40 years experiance in no time!!!!! The ones out here are "blonde" setters, cheers
  6. My ferts love walking in their harness. After a couple of days they realised the harness meant going for a walk and now they relax good when I put it on, after a few minor struggles the first few times. I have a rotary clothsline and I tie em to the end of it sometimes when I have to do other things(like get beer from the fridge). I reckon they are just as smart as dogs and they bounce around when I walk upto the court with the lead/harness.
  7. Yep, The Great Dividing Range, basically runs the full lenghth of the eastern seaboard at varying distance(normally less than 100km) from the coast. I live in the tableland transition country between the mountains and the vast western plains, cheers
  8. G,Day TOMO, I am about 4 hours west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, cheers
  9. Yep, your sister is just up the road(about 280km) Your right about the mornings, we have had 48 days in a row of minus 6c or worse during june/july/august but often 38c plus in summer!!!
  10. I forget the exact workings, but they released the callisi virus here a few years ago with mixed results, and immunity developed very quickly, cheers
  11. We start getting kittens here in late spring and autumn if we get rain. We have had the best season for 10 years, last year these paddocks were bare as, and we have had about 8 bad seasons in a row before this, cheers
  12. We have pro shooters who have mobile chillers, its illegal for unlicensed people to sell rabbits to butchers or the neighbours, etc, and they all have to be headshot. Yes we have myxy but its no longer effective to any degree, it will hit from time to time. They tried the callisi virus, but it was only mildly successful. The rabbit thing varies a lot. I lived on several large places(one 60,000 acres) a few hours north of my current location that didn,t have a single rabbit!!, but heaps of boar and foxes. The country changes a lot as you move about, cheers heres a bad pic of a mu
  13. I make her wear it incase she gets lost!!
  14. Cheers for the good wishes whin. Bugger that snow stuff!!! brrrr!
  15. My mk3 is the best money I have spent in ages. I am putting inexperianced ferrets into big warrens with confidence. The other major advantage on the big warrens is being able to "see" which part of the warren they are working. This means you can monitor the closest nets, a big advantage when its over twenty yards from side to side. My young jill became stationary for ten minutes, I dug about a foot and checked again, she was moving and bang, a bunny in the net. I don,t know if she was having trouble turning one or what but without out the finder she may have been there for much longer, and I f
  16. G,day Ian, yep we get all sorts of critters, some of the spiders are worse than some of the snakes but you grow up with em and you sort of learn to live with em. I do have a compression bandage(snake bite first aid) in my bag or glove box at all times. Main thing is no crocs here, they are the second most dangerous thing out(waves to mother -in-law)
  17. The permission property is a few thousand acres and filthy with bunnies. There are many warrens well out of my league with my current crew. This one had well over two hundred holes.!! Even a long net would be hard. There are gullies of continuous warrens, very hard to tell where one starts and ends, or if they do. you would be a brave man to put you fert down without a collar my jill Having a ball!! cheers
  18. This is my nine year old with her favourite of my two ferts, "Monster" the hob. Putting him in, VOILA!!! The ferrets were fresher today but it was quite warm(about 30c) so I only did one set well after lunch. The set, about a 45 holer we kept these for the table(ours and a few mates, my freezer is now full) Eventually I hope to do a post "a girl and her whippet" cheers
  19. Hope your right, when he is going proper I will be getting another one, check out the pics from Day 3 once its posted!
  20. I,m working on the long net idea, I will try and have one by the time the whippet is old enough to work. I spend a lot of my time on this particular place looking for smaller warrens, and this was one of them. There is one 500 metres from where todays pics were taken that is about 1 acre!! I will take some better pics soon, at the moment all I want to do is concentrate on the job at hand. I will eventually need more ferrets, but I would rather get my new crew going properly than get a heap of ferrets and dogs and end up as a circus. Prior to my getting permission a pro shooter was taking one h
  21. I have been walking my new ferrets most afternoons for the past few weeks, but obviously its not the same as "match fitness". Normally when I go to their court they jump all over me but after their BIG first day yesterday they were not as bouncy as normal. With that in mind I decided to just give them a light run on one set. They are only young ferrets. Here are some pictures of the set. It was about a 50 holer, I set my 20 nets and blocked the rest. I gave each about half an hour, they will come to my whistle and I can call them out. This was the first bunny t
  22. I,m in the country, the place I was on is about twentykm away but there are bunnies just up the road.
  23. Have only just put my crew together, two new season kits, a baby whippet and my 12 mnth warrigal that I got at 10mnths old. Today was everybodies first day. Was far too busy fussing about and using my new mk3 tracker for the first time to take many pics. Had a great day! Here are the pups and some of the bunnies. Heres the ferrets with their first feed of bunny from their own efforts. Will take a few more pics when I go back tomorrow, I should be a bit more casual with the maiden voyage out of the way, cheers
  24. Should be good on our two legged game, or would have been before the ban.
  25. Can,t beat a bit of trout poaching, I stayed a bit longer
