  1. I dont think there is any such thing as an easy earth unless you have done it a few times and with a dog that can push his game back..We recently did a three hole place that turned out a nightmare and 11 foot deep. It resulted in the loss of a good dog too. If you havnt dug it many times with different dogs you just cant know it enough to rate it as easy..

I also lost a good dog in a place I dug regularly and called a puppy spot. Its a hard call to predict what might happen before the terrier goes under, but I guess we all do it, which is fair enough based on past experiences at the place.

I know of other places that look like very easy sandy places, but the holes lie under a layer of sandstone and you need bars to chip through it, it always takes a couple of hours toil, looks like a 5 min job!

  2. Dont worry, if less experienced FAC owners (no offence meant mushroom) want to stand for a drive or two our keeper will be with them. I would like everyone to gain good experiences from this, but safety is top of the list at all times!

ULG, no probs, understood mate. I wont be shooting, I doubt any of the other lads will be carrying a rifle either, so we can all concentrate on getting the dogs on

  3. 500-600 quid in total ...travelling from the UK using the tunnel, sharing vehicle.

£200 deposit secures position (£150 for those who are already licensed and insured through the club). There will be a cut-off date for entries around mid August.

Unlacedgecko, it will be good to have you along, if you want to carry a rifle during the Batida (1st day) let me know... (same goes for others with FAC) Have a think about it.

  4. We are booked in for another 2 day hunt for the start of the season, during the last week of October.

The original team members are all invited back, and we will certainly be able to take a few others along who can contribute to a good hunt. There wont be any places for beaters without dogs this year. Its all about the hunting, the dog-work, and of course it will be great crack and an adventure onto some land that is a far cry from the usual hills and fields back home.

Day 1: Batida Hunt, Spanish style, with some select, experienced local hunters/dogs to bulk the squad up.

Day 2: Our personalised hunt day, we get to hunt in our own style on this day.

Lots of time to work on the finer details, but if you get a brainwave PM me :)

  5. Ive not had much chance to get online, but heres a few pics from the spain hunt. I like the land a lot out there, but scenting conditions were not great. I got a nice video of the pointer taking a line away on the last hunt of the first day, shortly followed by midge then gwen on the same line, was probably a fox. In the end we never managed to tackle the drives as planned, but we had a good old rake about. All the dogs put in plenty of miles and the bushers had some good runs on roe, boar and fox.
I would have liked to see the big dogs on game, and some roe were very lucky not to get caught by them, if only they were boar.

Ive got some plans to get the dogs over to France shortly, and still deciding what to do on the return to Spain in October.

  6. Pretty much, I just find that after a few weeks of brambles and your spaniels are working them 6 days a week, you can pull a hundred thorns from each ear every night and they can get a bit gunky, a quick wipe with salted water and its all good.

  7. why not take a litter of purebreds off her, provided you can find a stud of similar abilities to the dam? you will know exactly what you are getting, and by bthe sounds of it your bitch isnt lacking in any department which the pups could be improved upon?

I know, it might be a bit optimistic of me planning too far ahead, but I always end up doing it anyway. I haven't mentioned that I already have a pure dog lined up for her second/final litter, but I would like them to be more staggered age-wise as I find 1 pointer enough for my needs.

They are good dogs the pures, but there are areas where you could improve upon them for big game work. Bulldog blood should give a longer ranged hunting dog, as its been done a hell of a lot abroad, and when catching a wounded stag or a boar they will hold on that bit firmer and with no questions. That would pretty much sell it for me., but I hunt some very steep, very rough land, and I see the leggier dogs far ahead of the smaller dogs, plus if you have a dog of 30+KG on a beast, it will anchor it better than a terrier could ever do no matter how keen. Lurcher blood could help size as well as speed.

Ive done enough with my bitch to see room for improvements in these areas. But these dogs are amazing when you consider how versatile they are, and awesome gundogs.

  8. Thanks Joe I will give them a bell in the morning!

OK, looks like the last week in October!! Hunting 28th/29th.

The only slight problems, if you can call them that, is that if the corn is cut late, the boar will be down the fields chomping on corn. But, if its harvested, there could be plenty of game in the woods being so early in the season. Also, it could be warm during the day, and its a windy, rocky, dry place, all making scenting conditions less than favourable. (But... I was there mid-day in the height of summer and the dogs hunted a fox to a kill in a wee gully. Nothings certain. Either way Im sure the dogs will see enough game to keep us all on our toes!

    Thanks Jukel,

Funny enough, I heard about this dog from a mate. Its a thought that has crossed my mind as Pony was bred for pigging. I'd have to see said dog in the field at least a couple of times to feel confident.

irish lurcher as wheaten deerhound types i think , could be worth a pm to him d-n-n

    Cheers Chid,

Ive spoken to IL in the past about his dogs, as I noticed he had good foxing lurchers with no greyhound blood, I think they are Irish Terrier, not Wheaten. That was a while back, but I liked the ones he had.

FdR - I did briefly get in touch with Dai, and his dog looks like a perfect stamp for my requirements, seen his feet are big and solid, good coat, good worker, nice natured dog by all accounts. I might have scared him away with my endless rambling about hunting and breeding via PM

Sorry for totally hijacking this thread too :icon_redface: haha

  10. I might be coming down with Lee now, as my passengers have dropped out and it would cost me a lot to take a vehicle on my own... a shame I already booked the tunnel, maybe they refund lol

Yes Im already drooling about those fresh fried boar heart, liver and egg breakfasts we will surely be feasting on soon! If we have to settle for rabbit (or fox lol) then we know something went wrong :D

  11. Ok, some here know I have a well bred German wirehair (drahthaar) bitch that Ive used a lot for bird hunting (snipe and grouse mainly) also, rabbits/hares, fox, deer, boar, raccoon, squirrel and has treed black bear. In UK, in Europe, and in Canada. She has hunted up caught fox single handed on rough ground. Great stalking companion. Basically, I do a lot of different things, and wanted a dog that will do it all with me... I think it was a good choice.
I want to breed a litter from her in the future, but heres my issues and thoughts on what Im after from the future pups:

I dont need or want, fast dogs, for the land I hunt at home aswell as the spots I visit abroad, its usually pretty rough going, which has taken its toll (injuries) of my previous lurchers which all had half greyhound, (though not as a direct perent as they were line bred or lurcher/lurcher). I need solid legs and feet, and want to retain a rough double coat. I will hunt the pups with their dam, and they will be primarily used for stalking red deer (tracking shot beasts), foxing, and occasional boar, with the odd night lamping. I know the pointer will add plenty of 'hunt', and no shortage of drive, but I know bulldogs and pointers cross very well for big game hunting, so a bit of that might be on the cards. I was thinking of using a Bull/Deerhound but I have not had much luck finding a good one, with a willing owner.

I dont want to use a greyhound. They are not robust enough for me, and I need much more wind from a dog than they can give, I hunt my dogs dawn till dusk regularly.

I dont want to use a coursing dog, but sure they have decent stamina and usually sound feet, plenty of speed.

Wheaten lurcher, sould give strong, keen hunting dogs with good coats? Deerhoundy lurcher, should give fast pups? Or other line bred lurcher?

In Canada I will be able to hunt them on coon, woodchuck, fox, yotes, bear etc alongside the hounds/terriers and Im sure they would cross nicely back to the staghound for a good hunting staghound type.

lol sorry for the rant folks, thats where Im at at the minute, Id love to hear what you would choose if you were in my shoes.

    Regards

  12. I know the old collie x grey is tried and tested but I went the route of lurcher x collie..afterall what has a greyhound to offer that a good genuine lurcher hasn't? All a greyhound has to offer is speed and even that is in the main only obtained on a sanded, rolled track where they only run in a clockwise direction..a good fast lurcher surely has atleast the equal of that to bring to the table? Obviously barring hare coursing which is illegal now anyway id personally not be hoodwinked into thinking that a collie x HAS to have nothing other than it and greyhound blood to make them superlative to a cur bitza..just my thoughts folks,im not looking for arguments. .its xmas time lol

I really am on your wavelength buddy. +1
