  1. I don't know how good plummers books are but i read one line of that book and put it down..........i quote "To teach a dog to sit apply pressure to its hindquarters and say repeat the word sit"(or along those lines) now I don't know what others believe but that is the wrong way to teach sit and can damage dogs if done to forcefully, so the rest i disregarded.......................that jackie Drakeford book is a real cracker though definately one for the shelf in my house!!!
  2. that is RA-coons isn't it???
  3. not that i really know but my dog was pretty fit through the season just being out and about all day every day and not working but just up and about...........i thinks this leads to good mental fitness......i don't know if its the same with running dogs but i believe the dogs don't recover as well if their mentally tired as in not used to thinking about quarry.....what do people think???
  4. how much would a wheaton cross greyhound from very good lines sell for? as a pup? or how much would a say 19month old wheaton/greyhound from the same great lines working on fox etc sell for???
  5. I had my cocker bitch spayed before i got into working dogs and she has turned out to be a natural and picked it up like a seasoned pro, she is one of the kindest prettiest hard working obedient dogs around and every day i regret having it done......not something that can be undone......the only reason i would have a dog spayed now is if it was for their health such as problems while in season or if their not comfortable. Hope you can learn from my mistakes then you won't have to go through regret like i do!!!
  6. anybody work this cross or know much about them? info on breeding and training tips would be great
  7. well apparently there very popular with grouse keepers and such so maybe not so rare..........the lucky pups have been bought by my friend so are very workable and lovely dogs they are too....... the keepers who i am involved with are not too keen on lurchers and pointer crosses don't look too (and i'm being general) lurcher like also they will have the potential to work within the shooting field.
  8. Pointer cross Greyhound pup wanted Any body know of any litters ready or due? No rush as am looking for the right dog but i believe this cross will fulfill all my needs. Cheers Richard
  9. Countryman go to a high bird shoot of abt 100-150 bird day, then tell me you didn't struggle to hit them if you do. I'm not a great shot or anything but i can appreciate the quality of the birds, i have stood on drives where i thought the birds were pretty much out of range and the other guns were knocking them down.......f@cking good sport!!! try it! Personally i prefer being out alone and using fieldcraft so i would not pay to shoot driven but thats cos i ain't good enough yet try it before you knock it!!!
  10. Nice dog mate!! what breeding is he?
  11. i met the beast once his name was terry!!! lol Yeah what he f**k is it? not seen one of those deer!!!
  12. Beautiful dog!!! mate how tall is she?
  13. Does she pick up fur or rag it?? not sure if it applys to lurchers but my cocker didn't like feathers so i put a bird in a piece of tights that i made smell of me so she couldn't feel the feathers, once she picked that up a few times it was a great game and i started tearing holes in it so she xould feel some but didn't put her off untill it was all off...now she picks up runners and never looked back....might not be the same with lurchers but if she don't like the feel of fur it might help (how long do you reckon till someone says"what do you know dickyboy")
  14. Need experienced advice I have found a litter of pups with the complex breeding that i like but it is not quite the right time for me to get a pup but don't wantr to miss out on the right pup if they don't come up often! Pup = 1/2 greyhound 1/4 deerhound 1/8 saluki 1/8 collie!!! Is is sort(roughly) of breeding quite common? anyone know of any litters like this being ready in march?!
  15. well i think doxhope answered that then!!
  16. Anyone going to Fieldsport2006??? in fareham? only an evening thing but might be worth a look-got a lurcher show!! lurcher show details 02380893988 show details 02380585421 In particular any one from south going???
  17. I have finally decided what sort of dog i want!! Thank You to all involved as i know it was a complicated lengthy affair!(and you are now all gonna say "why you getting one like that") End of feb -- march time Is anyone breeding or expecting a litter around that time??? Of 1/2 greyhound 1/4 deerhound 1/4collie or 1/2 greyhound 1/4 bedlington 1/4 collie or 1/2 greyhound 1/4 saluki 1/4 collie Or a litter made from these breeds with at least half greyhound Or something very similar eg got a bit of whippetin or something?? Anywhere considered, And a good loving working
  18. To start again and i'm further to knowing what i want! Specs required(obviously these are all flexible cos i know dogs aren't made to measure) 24-26" abt three quarters running dog but quite quick off the mark for the small fields at least half greyhound intelligent steady so as to just tag along when i'm at work etc A good allrounder possess a nose for trailing shot deer etc be a general companion dog to use on most terrains but a fair bit of hunting in small fields so needs to jump for ferreting, a bit of ratting, finding game for itself, the odd fox or deer(but not going to b
  19. Yes i suppose it could well mean that! Your advice is very handy yeeharr as we are very near to each other! It is amazing to know that there is such an anti lurcher view my way and so pro lurcher your way as we're a matter of miles apart How big would a dog bred like that grow? And are collie crosses one man one dog sorts dogs?
  20. YEEHARR Bollox to it i'll answer them anyway!! I have not even asked to go out on any ones permission as i do not have a dog yet i am only learning and it would be rude!! I have not spoken to enough people for long enough to ask to go out with anyone, expect to be invited out or invite anyone to where i have permission!!! PRACTICE the art of ferreting so i know what to do before i try and teach a dog what to do!!! Rabbits are unpredictable little critters and i wanted some experience before i tried to get a dog some experience!!! Work Experience - Cos i was training to be a bui
  21. Can i ask does anyone else need me to justify myself and my questions by answering all of yeehars posts? As they are quite probing and slightly to close to home as he quite rightly says there are unscroupulus people out there! I have been speaking to a couple of other people and they have also suggested greyhound, deerhound, collie crosses. In particular one said something along the lines of 1/2 greyhound 1/4 deerhound 1/4 collie!! Has anyone had any experience of dogs like this? I feel this may have the brains, gameness, speed and size i'm after! Do these crosses mix well? Cheers
  22. Well pretty much central south! just a generalisation! gonna get me in trouble i can see it! there are a few ppl around with lurchers butan awful lot of fences so not that good lurcher ground. and in my local vacinity and the surrounding estates very few keepers or general ppl have working lurchers. Also hard to assatain permission. I suppose they just don't understand em. more labs and cockers or springers really. just shooting people. Didn't mean to offend people but all round me thats the view!! maybe just cos i more in the shooting side of it! Wish i knew more lurcher people round h
  23. The deerhound cross posts are very helpful! I know i want greyhound in the make up and some more running dog not a half bred but i also want a dog with brains! which is what i've always read collies are good for! which is why i made the original post with so many choices!! not changing my mind i know the basis of the dog i want but am not sure what crosses make intelligent dogs ones that can think for themselves and have some self control. not just killing machines! Nightwalker and to anyone else that can help i am in south east. small fields here for ferreting - go out most sundays, rats
  24. Just to clear it up once and for all! My life story and About me!!! I am 20years old and was just pissing about with the "mummy" comment as she does rule the household!!! Where I am and in the line of work(gamekeeping in the south) lurchers are purely associated with gypsys and didn't know if boss had an anti lurcher view I have owned and trained many dogs for a charity(puppy socialising) have also trained very difficult breeds and had experience with aggresive dogs but as i live at home i have to comply with "MUMMYS" rules We have owned 2 lurcher(whippet/greyhound x collie/lab but neve
  25. Fellman not to disagree cos both sides have strong cdases but i live in an area where fieldsports are just not that known about even though there being pursued all round there houses, and i speak to people and yes most would be considered anti's but I do not believe many of them would take the time to bother to vote! You must have seen the hunting ban sign--- 59% say keep hunting, even though i support this, i'd disagree and say 50% of the population don't give it a second thought and out and out antis are in small numbers! I have met people who are not antis but were paid by animal righ
