Have to tip the cap to anybody who works in the same job for their whole lives probably not entirely happy just to keep a family going and live straight. I could never live week to week working in some factory for some f****r creaming off others hard work but I understand some people didn’t have a choice. I must have listened to too much Christy Moore ha.

It’s a huge pity the youngsters just don’t seem to have the interest anymore. Maybe it’s just they have more things to do now than when we were younger to entertain themselves. When I think back to being around 13 or 14 being out with a pal in his fathers boat trying to put out ray nets how more of us weren’t killed is amazing one slip or a leg caught in that net and you were gone straight over. Off the top of my head we fished for bass, mullet, mackerel, and ray in the summer months and come the winter it would be salmon, sea trout, flukes and even done abit at spurdogs. Have never had a 9-5 steady job when we were young my father worked away a lot and was only ever really home every couple of months so once we came of age we were just sent to join him in england. Could it be a mixture of years ago when people went to do a trade they usually worked with family, father or uncle would take a young lad on and everyone knew the story and got on abit better. Instead of getting a lad at 16 now you’re getting a chap of 20 who knows it all already and just isn’t worth the agro? The value of a trade has definitely been undersold the last 10/15 years. Some chaps are happier shovel into a mixer for £100 a day than put the head down for a few years and get the reward at the end

I thought this all started with you saying putting kingspan in the floor was a waste of money and that a pitched roof was also a waste. We still fish them in the season would usually get 10 or 12 dozen any night you’d go just for a feed and to pass around. Good old sport and nice to get out on the crisp winter nights. Always a good few trout running that time of year as well so a nice bonus. I find herrings very tastey I really enjoy them proper fish taste and very clean.

Is fishing herrings in a small punt a thing on the solway? I just watched the video of the haaf netting I hadn’t ever seen that before have seen similar things but they were a more permanent thing like a trap. But the estuary looks like a place you’d get herrings in the season
