  1. Exactly that lads, but we do a farm 20 mile north of here and the farmer is at his witts end with rabbits. No deer and only the odd hare on there. Same with the hawks here, as a kid never saw a buzzard or red kite, now more than people. Hares everywhere same as muntjac and Roe. Andover swamped in Fallow and you'll see massive (50+) herds
  2. What's the wild population like in your area ? Here in Hampshire they are very rare now, as a kid and young man every other Bush had a greenie or chaffinch nest in it. Now both are rare, goldfinch and bullfinch very very common. Also only half the amount of linnet about ( my favorite bird ) buntings and yellow hammer plentiful. Very few starlings and not so many house sparrow. Rakes of wood pigeon. When I was young if a woodie landed you'd see a mass of kids run off for an air rifle or catapult, now they're on your bird table eating bread !!
  3. New to the forum Anybody on here using milbro or milbro style forks with squares or tubes ? Been using same for 49 yrs. And would never change
  4. Has any other areas witnessed the massive reduction in rabbit numbers. 3 year ago we was knee deep in them , now an average morning ferreting is 5 _ 10 . On the other hand we are over run with Hares and deer. 10 year ago never see a muntjac here, now you can't drive out at night without one walking out in front of you ! Roe everywhere and odd passing herds of fallow. On the bird side , hardly any starlings and greenfinch almost gone ! Whole area has changed, most common bird here .. Goldfinch.... rare when I was a kid (59 Yr old)
  5. I have a couple of micro ferrets and have worked them. In this area we have a lot of deep chalk rabbit earth's and I've found the micro's don't go deep enough. Cracking little ferrets for pets or shallow eaths in my personal opinion. Never had one hole up so I belive they don't stay with a rabbit. (maybe they don't like the stick from a holed up rabbit ?). My proper workers are a very inbred old strain, small slim and will go all day, even shifting a stubborn old chalk buck ! Just my opinion but the micro ferret is a show/ pet animal and not a serious working partner.
  6. Remember as a kid using lime on drop twigs, set at different angles depending on what birds you was after, also setting it on string lines, always cleaned up with charcoal or sometimes another ingredient was needed. Very easy to make lime, and have even seen a postman make instant lime out of a bundle of elastic bands !!
