  1. Hope this works... trying to put a couple of pictures of the slip leads he made / sold. Pictures saves a thousand words trying to explain it ...... if I gets it right. Bet a few on here will remember them when you see's it
  2. What supplements ( if any ) do you lads on here use for your dogs or pups.? I personally don't use them any more ( just good mixed feeding ) but back in the early 80's when we lamped most nights and/ or ferreted during the day I used a product called SA37E for greyhounds. Just sniffing about the Web I can't seam to find it now. Must be discontinued or replaced by an up-to-date formuls
  3. If anyone on here could tell me how to put a photo on ( in idiot language) I would show you one of his slips . Cracking idea and as he said " would suit any size dog " and you could "easily walk over rough ground with a whippet with one "
  4. I have a 3/4 italian greyhound x whippet. Just coming 4 year old. We took him on at 1 Yr old and never seen a thing. 17inch to the shoulder and as tough as any dog I've own, I'm coming 60 and have had dogs all my life. Not a cross I would have considered if I was after a pup as I always have collie x , except for a bedlington x pup I have now. This Italian x is fantastic on rabbits , never Jack's and also has had rats ,squirrels and pheasants, this is very good hare country and I reckon he might have had a few pre ban (lol), good feet and we are on flints and very obedient. The whippet si
  5. Oldphil, is he still about ? Used to write to him weekly back in the early 80's Wish I knew how to put a bloody picture on here as his slips would fit all size dogs and would give younger dog boys a good idea or 2 of a slip lead. " Long enough to walk with a whippet over rough ground " That's what his adds said if I remember
  6. Anyone on here know David Knowles of Hyde Cheshire? Was a regular contributer to "Lurcher " magazine in the 80's. He made and sold slip leads through countryman weekly (Can't remember what is was called then ) ran a very good pair of Bedlington lurchers. I still have one of his slips but don't know how to put a picture on here! I'd be to get very happy to get back in contact with him
  7. Never used the Victor but do use the Nipper above any plastic trap. For bait I mainly use peanut butter, sometimes sprinkled with bird seed or a few grains, these stick to the peanut butter and the rat has to work a bit harder to get the bait so easily triggers the trap. Best bait is of course what they're feeding on , whether it's your bird/chicken food or fat balls from bird table. If I have a tricky one I try the skins off smoked mackerel or the skin off the boiled bacon. The bacon skin I hang up out off their way for a few days then use it. Especially in cage traps
  8. I have an 11 month old sandy hob i needs to rehome. Quite large and absolutely tame. Has been out once so totally green. I've had him a month as lad who had him can no longer keep him. He had him from 8 weeks. Nice ferret just needs taking out next season or kept for a pet. Very easy to handle and has never even tried to bite. Andover area. Must be good Home.
  9. Anyone else on here interested in collecting vintage traps and other bygones. I got a good few old traps, bird and animal plus old shepherds crooks and eel spears. Always picking them up at boot or farm sales.
  10. Anybody on here got a very very good cadet or cadet major they might be willing to sell ? Also interested in BSA Mercury
  11. Exactly that lads, but we do a farm 20 mile north of here and the farmer is at his witts end with rabbits. No deer and only the odd hare on there. Same with the hawks here, as a kid never saw a buzzard or red kite, now more than people. Hares everywhere same as muntjac and Roe. Andover swamped in Fallow and you'll see massive (50+) herds
  12. What's the wild population like in your area ? Here in Hampshire they are very rare now, as a kid and young man every other Bush had a greenie or chaffinch nest in it. Now both are rare, goldfinch and bullfinch very very common. Also only half the amount of linnet about ( my favorite bird ) buntings and yellow hammer plentiful. Very few starlings and not so many house sparrow. Rakes of wood pigeon. When I was young if a woodie landed you'd see a mass of kids run off for an air rifle or catapult, now they're on your bird table eating bread !!
  13. New to the forum Anybody on here using milbro or milbro style forks with squares or tubes ? Been using same for 49 yrs. And would never change
  14. Has any other areas witnessed the massive reduction in rabbit numbers. 3 year ago we was knee deep in them , now an average morning ferreting is 5 _ 10 . On the other hand we are over run with Hares and deer. 10 year ago never see a muntjac here, now you can't drive out at night without one walking out in front of you ! Roe everywhere and odd passing herds of fallow. On the bird side , hardly any starlings and greenfinch almost gone ! Whole area has changed, most common bird here .. Goldfinch.... rare when I was a kid (59 Yr old)
  15. I have a couple of micro ferrets and have worked them. In this area we have a lot of deep chalk rabbit earth's and I've found the micro's don't go deep enough. Cracking little ferrets for pets or shallow eaths in my personal opinion. Never had one hole up so I belive they don't stay with a rabbit. (maybe they don't like the stick from a holed up rabbit ?). My proper workers are a very inbred old strain, small slim and will go all day, even shifting a stubborn old chalk buck ! Just my opinion but the micro ferret is a show/ pet animal and not a serious working partner.
  16. Remember as a kid using lime on drop twigs, set at different angles depending on what birds you was after, also setting it on string lines, always cleaned up with charcoal or sometimes another ingredient was needed. Very easy to make lime, and have even seen a postman make instant lime out of a bundle of elastic bands !!
