  1. Let's see if now is working...

A new roebuck hunted by me in the mountain area. I also had the opportunity to hunt wild boars, so I used the "big" rifle (Voere 9.3x62) instead of the small old lady in 6.5x54.

In the first days I had the chance to see many animals (including a huge male boar that I first  thought to be a bear due to his size) but I had no luck with my roebuck. It was so bad due to the fact that in the first day I had an epic miss at short distance (~70m) on an abnormal male. I'm unable to explain it even now...

In my last day, we changed the area and climbed a hill for ~1km. On the way to the top of the hill we started to collect mushrooms (at least to not return empty handed again :D ). On the top, I had the advantage of height and I managed to spot this young male in an area full of bushes. The distance was good (~100m) so I took the shot and the male dropped dead instantly (shot at the base of the neck)

The next part was not so easy due to the wet grass and long distance to the main road. My companion helped me by carrying ...the heavy mushrooms

  2. As I promised earlier...

Last year was one of my worst in terms of time allocated for hunting and this mainly because I had to travel often in other countries (mostly to UK).

I spent most of the time from the beginning of the season trying  to hunt a specific roebuck but I had no luck ( due to bad weather, human activities or simply bad luck). At least I had some beautiful sceneries and a lot  of exercise (much needed after the winter season)

    IMG_20170504_072940.thumb.jpg.62f691b3a6eda4e42f8af2b04d2578c3.jpg

After this failure I had to travel to Exeter for 6 weeks because my company had a contract with MetOffice. The bad part was that this was in the middle of the season, the good part was that at least I escaped the horrible weather from Bucharest (+40 degrees). I had the pleasure to work with very nice people there and they helped me to have a nice experience. One of the managers even took me to a shooting range nearby just in case I miss the burned gunpowder smell :D

    IMG_20170719_182619.thumb.jpg.05f9cb7b2597ede6d24c41b2f2514dd8.jpg

I was amazed on the fact that the shooting conditions are so easy to set up in UK, in Romania is very difficult to obtain all the approvals for something like that and an expensive concrete fence is required  (but this is already another topic).

    IMG_20170827_064701.jpg.f09860b5438813fa3af6d42267cab1e7.jpg

Back in my country, I was eager to go after a roebuck and, after unsuccessfully searching again for the old [and cunning] male, I had some luck in a beautiful morning, managing to hunt 2 nice roebucks. (~60-80m, Voere 9.3x62, Norma Oryx 18.5g)

     IMG_20170827_080713.thumb.jpg.97c129d900829e3fef60e041410c7212.jpg

....and a picture with my hunting guide from that morning. A person with some amazing hunting experiences, especially one related to a bear (again, off-topic)

    IMG_20170827_080510.thumb.jpg.267d6f4f9936171f68832f2f51680fa0.jpg

In the end, this was my only roebuck experience from that season because soon after that  my parents complained about a salami shortage and I had to hunt a wild boar. And then, the red stag season started :D

  3. A weird [and dangerous] combination of old and poor quality glass that somehow works for his eyes (or at least he claims that). I tried and I was not able to see anything ... My other companion also had old binoculars but one of a very good quality (a Zeiss) and I can tell that it can compete with modern stuff with no problems.

I think that I will look in my archive for bucks from previous seasons :)

Brno 22F in 7x57 vs. Mannlicher Schönauer in 6.5x54. Brno tried to copy the design but with a Mauser action. They did a good job but now, when I'm able to compare them side by side, I could tell that the Mannlicher action is smoother . The sights are identical,  the trigger group also identical, Brno has a longer barrel (and this is making it well balanced for my size)  and I prefer the bolt handle position of ZB.

    Such a little beauty :D

The old lady at work  :D

  5. The smallest animal from the "big game" list (roe deer, fallow deer, mouflon,  red stag, wild boar, bear, chamois)  is also one of my favorites (maybe also due to the fact that we could not hunt too many species in this year period - from May until October). The only thing that I don't like while hunting roebucks is the warm weather. 2 things, I forgot about mosquitos :D

This year I was unable to start the season from the beginning but I finally managed to escape the job responsibilities for one week and I was able to hunt 4 roebucks.

My first attempt was in a mountain area and I had a mixed bag option (male wild boar and roebuck). I had no luck despite the fact that I was able to see many females and youngsters and ...some beutiful sceneries. After 2 days, I went south ~80km in a hills area and I was able to shot my first roebuck of the season from the first evening (~120m, 9.3x62, Norma Oryx 18.5g)

Sorry for the low quality of the pictures but the old males could be shoot only late, in low light

    IMG_20180528_212048.jpg.4fc3e0bccdaa5420012bbfe1cd9c936e.jpg

The expedition continued in the next day and another morning but without success. More than 30 females in my sight and only males for my friend. He was able to shoot a nice buck  but I don't have his permission to post the pictures. In the next evening I was again in the field and I tried to shoot a really old male but without luck. The thick vegetation and a jackall prevented me from taking the shoot.

While I was heading back to my car, I spotted a young buck at about 40m. Since it was clear that the buck will never became a medal trophy and I also had to leave next morning, I decided to shoot him. (~40m, heartshot, 6.5x54MS, RWS Teilmentel 10.3g). My surprize was that he ran away for ~ 50m, leaving a huge blood trail. I think that this could be explained only by the fact that no big bone was hit....

    IMG_20180530_212244.thumb.jpg.777e4b9a9033c7d3133eede540c4a2d2.jpg

In the next day, I was 200km away in one of favourite regions - a truly wild mountain area. I try to also take my DSLR with me but I often leave the camera in my car because it is too heavy. Stupid choice this time - one male bear chased a female in front of me in brutal game of force and love.

    IMG_20180601_194659.jpg.81027747de9c963490cd4d755c971404.jpg

The luck was on my side and this old male went down despite the fact that the light was really low... ~50m, 6.5x54MS, RWS Teilmentel 10.3g

    IMG_20180601_212641.jpg.0879fdea09716a3af36522c3298a2e8d.jpg

After properly celebrating this evening with a dry red wine, I decided to carefully choose the next one - either a big trophy or a really old male. I did not expected to have luck again in the next day. I put a picture of the area only to show that I'm also able to take a picture in a decent light :)))

    IMG_20180602_201536.jpg.8a81d41d58fd220fdfcd866153f2d68c.jpg

My companion spotted the old male on the top of the hill and I went after him to reduce the distance and to better observe him. Instead of going over the ridge, he changed the direction and came straight to me. I stopped him right before to came in to the open and see me at about 60m away. (Neck shot, 6.5x54MS, RWS Teilmentel 10.3g). The white balance was set to +1 on my phone camere and the picture is "burned" :(

    IMG_20180602_204402.jpg.72760ef862064b7e5bb7161fca0fdcfd.jpg

It's fair to also add a picture with my companions from this last hunt, each of them observed a different valley  and this was very important because the density is low due to the big carnivores (they  have a hunting quota of 2 males for an area of ~10.000ha).  The old guy is a local hunter, a simple man but with a huge experience in big game hunting

    IMG_20180602_204622.thumb.jpg.adba0d80e03a0886be5463d4a8d9472a.jpg

I hope to have enough time this summer for hunting another 1-2 roebucks. Probably I will use the same old rifle despite the fact that the Leica Magnus from my other rifle seems to be from another galaxy compared with the ancient Zeiss mounted on this Mannlicher :D

  6. It is illegal to hunt wild boars with catch dogs in Romania. Some people will do that on their risk and yes, they are able to catch a wild boar (mostly females and youngsters but sometimes also full size males)

We are using the dogs just for finding and pushing the animals to the hunters.  Obviously, injures are frequent  because the dogs will often make contact with a wounded animal or with one that will simply don't want to leave the thick vegetation. Small size dogs are usually safer to use...

A primer? Even a live round doesn’t pose much danger on its own, without a gun to fire it from. You could throw it at someone I suppose.....

Yes, a primer. Their argument was that this could be used to ignite an explosive device. Soooo stupid! If a licensed hunter could use a primer for an explosive device then he could easily obtain some from a factory made cartridge ;) Also, the power of artificial fertilizers is already proven for the crazy people that will want to build a bomb.

If I were out there I would obtain or make the stuff to reload and just do it. No one would know.

Yes, this is an option but the penalty if you are caught is too big. If you have one single primer you are some sort of a terrorist now (I wonder how many hunters used that for doing terrorist acts).

I remember that when I was still a kid (not long time ago) , my father used to reload cartridges because he did not trust  the factory slugs for dangerous game. It was more like a ritual for him and I was fascinated to assist

  9. No, is not common. It was included in the gun price from the previous owner.

Probably, I will send a custom command to Austria (or maybe RWS will start producing it again - they have a poll on their  site for this).  Reloading is not possible in Romania (stupid law!!)

Anyway, since this will be used only at roe deer stalking, I have enough for ~15-20 years

Ps  there is no side windage on the Hensoldt.  There is only vertical adjustment.  is the side windage done on the base mount?

Yes. And is not so easy to do, usually tis should be done by a gunsmith.

Actually, the biggest problem with this kind of weapon is to find the proper mounts for the weapon, not for the scope. I think that the scope is similar with the one that I have  mounted on Steyr (check the pictures)

One that site, from time to time, one could find all kind of 'exotic' mounts for old systems (this is an auction that I missed http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=6859563#img)

P.S. why would you need a silencer for?

Thanks for posting those pictures. it is always  interesting to see other guns and equipment setup.  Here are a few pictures of the old Hensolt  scope that I have obtained.  I don't have mounts for it at the present but although it is old the optics are first class and it would out do many modern scopes. The 1A reticule is more suited to deer shooting than smaller species like fox.

Keep an eye on egun, you should find some good mounts there...  That reticle is very good in low light condition, here could be used in a night with full moon at wild boars :D Also, with some training, that reticle could be used as a rangefinder ;)

Nice rifle, it seems to be a more recent model.

I love your posts because they show different sorts of guns and setting. They are  more like traditional deer stalking rifles with a European flavour.  I  like  the stutzen style and have a Mannlicher stutzen in 243. My stutzen is a set single trigger and topped with a 6x42 Habict nova,  which is a superior optic  . I have a scope similar to yours which is a Hensoldt it has a big thick pointed post  like a German #1 reticule. Love your posts and would like to see a good close-up picture of those scope mounts and how they they are fixed up.

I'm having a single trigger at my Voere rifle. I'm happy with that but will never match the double trigger set for long distances :D The disadvantage of these old ladies is that  is very difficult to put a top quality scope on them (I have a Leica Magnus 2.4-16x56 on Voere)

I also have the original scope of the Brno (a very old Meopta that I should send to some serious repair). The scope from the Mannlicher is an old Carl Zeiss with German #1 reticle (very good in poor light)

The scope mount from Brno is factory made (and is a more elegant solution), the one from Mannlicher is added later. Both are quick detachable mounts.

This is the best picture I found for my Brno in order to see the base mounts.

In the next picture one could see the mobile part of the mount. Press on the lateral buttons and the scope could be removed by pushing up from behind.

    IMG_20140421_224313.jpg.dfd8565f546ea4f2e77bfa9dbe9fed70.jpg

The scope mount has the same serial number as the weapon

    IMG_20140421_224338.jpg.f03611682a52adccce72db479891ac40.jpg

Since that scope is not in a really great shape, I had to put a modern scope. I was able to mount a Bushnell Elite 4200 but not without problems. The mount rings diameter is 26mm and not 1 inch and I had to put one layer of duct tape (reinforced with fiber glass) inside. Worked perfectly and I had no issue with that for ~ 2 years. Here is a picture of it with the "modern" scope (I had only 1mm between the scope and open sights :D )

    IMG_20160611_210626.jpg.fa78a9cd176dbda9d983e630fea9c5ae.jpg

This is from Steyr. The button (red arrow) is part of  a "L" form and will push the "mount safety" back in order to allow the scope mount to enter.  After that, the button could be rotated like a regular screw and mount could not be removed anymore.

    IMG_20180426_191350.jpg.9f4472bc7067d5dc4b86e137cce5863f.jpg

This is the scope (not too elegant in my opinion due to that rail full of holes and with incomplete paint). I hope to have time and resources to fix this too
