A new book on training working lurchers..........
Ludwig replied to Sorley x's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I've used Purdeys Progress DVD and read the Frank Sheardown book (can't remember the name) but I would be interested in another book, but, to be honest mabye one that tackled some of the issues that put people off Marmite dogs (love/hate) like BullXs and Salukis and possibbly collie X's? -
I like the Black bitch, is she a Deerhound X? L**

I made two about a year back just that cheep black garden netting on 18" hazel Pegs with twine as the running top and bottom lines and about 50% bag worked a treat as i was digging out Rats with a terrier and the problem I had with more bag was the dog chewed the net when killing the rats but they worked well as the rats just hit them and were slowed for the terrier to catch up and catch them. I've lost these nets now but they were cheep as chips to make.

I'm using the Purdy's Progress video methods to train my Whippet Pup, I'm hoping for him to do all that you are going to ask of your pup. Seems to be working and I'd say it's worth watching for your first ever lucher as i didn't with my first and to be honest he was not the dog he could have been. I've always avoided Bull X's because of the heavy jaw, i was put off when a guy who I bought a Patterdale off told not to make any sudden moves around his as it had already killed a Lab and a springer; as I've said I've never had one but this made me think that perhaps taking a dog physiclly cap

Just managed to get back on THL (between Flu, Ferreting and the festive season I've been too busy to check the site) and found all the replys to this post; thanks for all the people who have said that the dogs are lookin good etc, it makes being dragged around on the bike by the B/W dog seem a bit more worth while when he began to fill with some nice muscle tone does anyone else rate running the dog alongside a bike for improving its fitness? It seems to do my'n the world of good, I took out the Pup the other day for 100yards at 5mph (just to get him used to the bike so it's less of a shock wh

Chalkie, I take it the produce of the union betwix the Polecat and the Silvers produced a less than desirable love of killing bellow ground leaving you having to dig that hard flinty ground; how do you think they'ed fare to rats? Lud

Thats a bargin, but where did you get the sheet netting as I got 150yds for about £35 but your price is far more attractive? it did say 6z didn't it?

Looks like a posers spade to me..... Fair point, but I don't mind looking like tosser if they're good to use and not too heavy to carry. I don't have to dig often and because of that I cant see a point in having a huge heavy spade to lug bout every chuffin set.

Thanks H&J I've contacted the company and asked them if any one stocks them near me, if they doo then I'm gonna go have a look; I think you might be right about the comfort but I will look at them anyway as they are either going to be great or absolute crap. Thanks for the Advice Lud PS I couldn't get the link to work.

Just found these and I'm tempted But which one?? http://www.blackada.com/ They're used by metal detectorists! Anyone used them? Advice please. They seem to retail at about £15 for the Invader and £20 for the extended Invader. Thanks Lud

Good question, If i was being wise I'd probably say its personal preference I've never had a Bedlington Whippet, but I have asked my self this question more than once and here are my thoughts. I'm not trying to put anybodys back up as I certain that a lot of people with Beddi Whippets are gonna come back and say that they have dogs which are by far better than my Whippets Many people swear by Beddi Whippets and many swear by Whippets; Some say that beddi whippets are more likley to open up (bark when hunting) some say that the coat is better in the broken coatedones as they

Fish Fish, If you are looking for a dog to take a rabbits as a main stay then you should consider a Working Whippet or Whippet Cross of some sort as these are dependable little dogs for bunny bashing; I wouldn't advise going for dogs bred from larger sight hounds as they are IMO a bit over sized for just Rabbits that said I have a friend who had a Deerhound X Greyhound that took more than its fair share of rabbits in open country but then again in woods and cover It was not so lucky and some of the other things it killed would be frowned upon these days . As for the non Sighthound part

Mooster, I like your analogy their but I have to disagree as I have a ferret who will bolt rabbits surface and then look for the Carry box and climb in for a nap (she's done it about half a dozen times?), Could be narcalepsy triggered by the excitement I guess LOL, but if she ain't sniffing off after a rabbit who slipped the net then she will look for her box? I think it maybe where she'd sit in the mouth of rabbit holes when she was young and refuse to come out; the only thing I could think to do was put the box there for her to run too and she'd jump in and curl up Odd little Pug. Just afew things I'd consider Sewers? Railway? Electrical Condhuit? Whats in the adjoining units (Pet food store or something?)? Food? Water? and as Millet said is the Unit the only warm easily accessible place for them?? Good Luck with it Lud

I work a Whippet to the Ferrets and nets and to be honest Without him I'd of had less than half the rabbits I caught on my last trip out He only caught one on the run the other few ones were a mixture of holding the coneys in the long nets, bushing one rabbit back into the wrong side of the longnet from some scrub that it was sitting in unbenownst to meand then holding it there, and one final one was ripped from a bury where it was taking the part of a rope in a tug O war betwix ferret and Dog. i can't say that he has ever hovered silent over a bury waiting for a bolt or dug to a ferr

She looks grand, I'm gonna have to make a bit of time this week to give Balloo some 1on1 time because he really enjoys attention but with having two Whippets in the house Its harder to make that bond, that said his recall is good and he will sit if you stand near him holding anything that will fit in his gob. I'm very pleased with him and have high hopes for him. Cheers Frank

Hi Frank, Last time I got out we got one rabbit and a wood pigeon both courtesy of a friends Shotgun which in many ways I felt was cheating so your 1 is impressive in my books. The girl Pup is looking like a winner look forward to seeing her future exploits and good news shes so eager to see a rabbit. Lud

Zap I have found that the B/W Dog so far has Cut his foot on barbed wire about 6 months ago But not too badly and last week had a pathetic days Ferriting and to top it off he scratched his chest just enough to open the skin by half an inch but to be fair he didn't flinch or even make a sound which I guess makes him hardy enough. I't nearly healed already so no major inconvienience. I haven't lamped with him so I don't know how well he'd stand up to the kind off abuse that cold wet nights and stubble fields can offer. Their are other people who will give you good advice on whippets on h

Just putting a pic up of my too whippets relaxing, the older is out of sooty sam lines (Black and White one) and the little one is 11 1/2 weeks old and came from Frank (shipped over last week), I know that you can't really get a good idea of how he looks from this Pic but its one of his rare still moments and I was impressed with the Photo my wife took (I'm crap at taking pictures of the dogs). Anyway thanks to Frank and I hope this confirms what I said about him Settling in well, Here is another of him... While I'm Posting this I may as well Put on a few more Picture of the

Hi Steve, I've got a sapling out of Glen and I'm putting some pictures of him up on another new topic, My'n is 16 months old and coming on well ferreting. Yours is looking good how high is he TTS (my's 22.5") Good luck with him although I doubt you need it by the sound of him Rich

I keep mine inside but I also feel that one of the issues that stops me from Kennelling is that I'm worried about the neighbours complaining about the racket that the dogs would make while they settle in; If you live near people they don't like you having dogs in the garden and if you live in the middle of nowhere it just makes you an easier target for theives. I think dogs are more and more likley to be kept in house in the future for these reasons; But I would prefere to be able to keep them out kenneled. As for whats best for the dogs I think that as a dog ages and matures it is ok for

SkyCat has hit the Nail on the head. I work closley with the dog warden in a council in the South of England and she regularly has to deal with Twats who let their dog stray (somethimes repetativly), she will kennel them until they are picked up at a cost of £90 realease fee (sounds like getting a car back from the Towwers) quite often the people who let thier dogs stray won't pay up the cash which really says that they don't care about the dog, if this is so then the dog is eventully rehomed which in my humble opinion is the right thing as if you care about the dog you will find the cash to

I can't argue with your pics Peannymeadow and cheers for that PM, Even though I can't argue I was hoping investigate all my options before setting on a tried and tested whippet X or pure whippet (after all they both make perfect sense) I've got 5 months to think about it, So I may as well get all these fancyfull ideas of running something abit more unusual out of my system; No one got any advice about exotic whippet or GH crosses (picardys or kelpies or GSDs or ACD or huskies or JRTs or even Besenjis) as all advice would be welcome (of course finding someone with a litter crosses would be

I have been thinking about this one for a while and am still none the wiser? Next year in March/April I may be able to house a secound dog. At present I have a 15 Month old Whippet who is turning into a promising sapling ferreting rabbits and has had some fun on the rats. I haven't started him lamping yet but may give him a taste for it soon. The Wife has put in her two penneth and has asked that we don't have anything significantly bigger than our whippet(OK by me as I don't hunt any thing but Rats, Rabbits and occassionally Squirrels) so I guess I should steer away from Deerhounds
