Project About Wildlife, Nature And Nature-Oriented Practices In Wales

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am a Documentary Photography student in Cardiff, currently working on a project about wildlife, nature and nature-oriented practices in Wales. I have thought hunting could be a complex area to explore and, because I'd prefer to spare the forum of irrelevant information, I was hoping someone could help me with an email address or phone number or any contact information of a person or institution I could approach for more details.

Any name would be helpful and the Documentary Photography Department at USW would be very grateful for your help.

You can either answer to this post or contact me on: 16017498@students.southwales.ac.uk

Regards,

Patrick

Hi Patrick, I can't see an individual coming forward, reason being you've only posted one post and the probability you could be an Anti could run very high. Are you making a film/documentary or photographs only?Hunting is a complex area, wouldn't you be better off just concentrating on wildlife species? That way I'm sure the Natural Resources Wales would lend a hand. But if hunting is what you want go out tomorrow and buy a weekly paper called The Countryman's Weekly.

Thank you for the suggestions, I appreciate you taking my message seriously and coming up with advice.

I am definitely not an activist against hunting, nor am I looking to expose anyone in a negative light. If that was the case, I wouldn't have thought of it for my project because I prefer to steer clear of situations that make me feel negative and I did not move to Wales to mess up anyone's situation. I am interested in creating positive bonds and making contacts, not enemies, because a big part of my study is to be able to approach people and kindly ask them to let you in, so trust is a thing I am continuously building on.

As I said, I am studying Documentary Photography, so it's all about showing reality as it is, not distorting it.

I understand that people can be skeptical about this, because the topic is a sensitive one, especially in the context nowadays where information is consumed through a screen and everyone wants to be right. I would be happy to give you some names that anyone could contact at any time and ask about me, as a guarantee that I am not looking to mess around.

My course leaders and uni mentors are called David Barnes and Paul Reas, so anyone can easily check and see that my background is real. I also have signed papers where they vouch for this, because we have already been told that in many cases during our assignments people would be reluctant.

I have been interested in hunting for a long time, precisely because I see it as a natural phenomenon, one that is a thousand times preferable to the industrial way of killing animals. I do not practise it myself, but I watch documentaries and read up about it as often as I can.

When the assignment came up, I saw a good opportunity to approach the people who are into it and give them a voice, so to speak. I was thinking about taking some photographs and making a movie, all the while involving the subjects 100% in it. I would not be the one deciding what gets shown in the movie, it would be a product that we commonly decide on - because the point of the whole project is to swift the direction of photography as a unidirectional communication tool.

The photographs would be given to whomever allows me to take them, if they need them for promoting themselves or simply as a souvenir. At the same time, if anyone thinks that the movie is too much, I would of course not film.

The wildlife idea was one that I thought would work for a while, but after pondering a little, I realized that it is not as appealing from an artistic point of view simply because interaction is missing in that area. With hunting it is exactly that interaction between humans and nature that is captivating, plus the whole part where a real life person gets to express themselves about a thing that is as ancient as it is untamed.

I am totally up for answering any questions and even for meeting up for just one chat before beginning to work together, should someone decide to agree to that.

I can also be contacted on patrick_wassmann@hotmail.com, which is my personal email address.

Once again thank you for the kind reply, I sincerely hope I have clearly explained my intentions.

All my best,

Patrick
