Gsp Pup Problem - Will Train At Home But Not In The Field.

Hi guys my 6 month pup is reacting well to the stop whistle, re call, dummy retrieves etc, etc but as soon as i try to give this training away from my large garden he wants to be off trying to hunt.

Away from the garden and he wants to do his own thing - hunt.

Out in the car he is at the window staring at any bird he might see, his prey drive is incredibly strong.

When out for walks he is on the check chord or lead - and he still wants to hunt.

 

Any advice please ?

How does he want to hunt when he is on the lead?. The dog should be at heal when on the lead.

I was always told never train your dog in the garden always keep that as the home id just take him out and start from basics again until he dose it and don't give into him .

every walk is an opportunity to train just start the basics again when your out walking and don't let him hunt unless its for a dummy. Too much hunting too soon will ruin a pointer

Hi guys,

He`s on the check chord around the farms to stop him chasing after game. He will respond to a command/whistle when on a lead/check chord.

He scents both the wind and ground when out on the check chord and whenever he picks up a scent he will mill around looking and his tail is like a miniature helicopter.

I was told the garden is fine for basics like channeled retrieves, stop whistle, basic re calls as there are very little distractions.

This morning he trained well (10 min`s tops) in the garden. Took him to one of my permissions and he just wants to go hunting and will ignore any command .

I simply pick up the bag - no shouting, or whistle, and slowly walk back to my van and he will then return reluctantly. He seems to just want to hunt 24/7 when away from home.

I have been told not to allow him to chase game as it will "ruin him" hence the check chord as i cannot lock him up can i ?

dont take him anywhere with game until he has recall and stop whistle he is about a year to young to hunt

Try training on a football pitch or something similar where there is no game
