First Day Beating

So I turned up Saturday morning bright eyed and bushy tailed, everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Kept dog on lead while we were on the yard and guns were signing in and stuff. Headed out onto the first drive an irrigation pond. Ducks lifted as guns were getting into position so the gamekeeper had a good old chunter about how useless they are and how hard is it to get on a peg lol.

 

As the newbie I was put forward to don the thigh waders and get into the dyke end to push the birds off the island haha. Gamekeeper said it's only ankle deep (the usual tosh) so took dog off lead and in we waded. Pushed out a few ducks which the guns promptly dropped back into the muddy dyke. Dog was caked and so was I, and we ended up with the task of picking the ducks. Dog worked well and found all 6 duck.

 

Came out looking a bit worse for where and the dog even more so. We all had a laugh about how mucky I was for 20 minutes work and it felt like I'd passed the initiation.

 

From then on the game keeper asked me and the dog to stand behind the guns and pick up on the rest of the drives. She stood to heel all day and waited to be sent for birds she saw drop and did really well to find a few runners in the thick. Everyone was impressed with her on her first day working and I can't wait for the next day.

That's brilliant , great you enjoyed it and sounds like the dog did you proud. The beating with waders sounds a brilliant laugh the rougher the ground the more laughs .

Well done,and it sounds like the keeper clicked your useful dog and your good attitude.He'll be thinking what an asset ! Hope they paid you well and didn't take liberties.

And it was £20 for a very easy days beating and they put on a suet crust venison pie with veg and home made rice pudding at the pup after the shoot, all for free so couldn't complain at all.

Only kidding mate, glad the dog did you proud. Obviously you were panicking for nothing. You really shouldn't worry when you have the 'king' of dogs.....

Yeh I did say I was probably over thinking it but she surpassed my expectation with the limited training she has. But thanks again for all the replys and support. Appreciate it people.
