So what "cheap" 4x4 do i get???

Recommended Posts

I've had Vitaras for years both petrol & diesel. I drive a 2001 Grand Vit now & it is the best I've had. About 35mpg round the doors & had 42mpg on a run. They have the Peugeot HDI engines which are cheap to replace, but reliable anyway. Doubt I'd have anything else now as the bigger 4x4's dont return the same mpg & are more expensive to insure.

Think i just read a similar post from you about the Vitara.

Since starting this post things have changed. At least for the moment anyhow!! :hmm:

I may keep the car and get a quad to leave on my main permission. Or buy a mid sized 4x4 for both on and off the road.

I like the idea of a late model Grand Vitara with the pug diesel engine. But also like what i've read about the Freelander 2....... :hmm:

Bargain buys are jeeps , we all call 4x4 jeeps but, theres only 1 ! The cherokees are 2.5 crd diesels 30/35mpg & superb off road, will pull 3 tonne & very well built like tanks, a older 01/02 gem can be has for £2/3k & motors are proven to do 250/350k miles & more with regular servicing. get parts on line 1/4 price of dealers.

I'm in a similar boat I want a medium sizes 4x4 diesel for around £2k that I can part run of veg oil to make cheaper. At present I have a Subaru Impreza which is killing me in running cost with 18mpg supper unleaded and other maintenance so time for something with more ground clearance and cheaper to run. I did originally pin it down to a Teranno 2.7Tdi swb but the more I hear about rust the more I'm re-thinking. I did have a look at a Rav 4 lwb which I liked but being petrol wont be as cheap to run.

Can you get a medium size diesel 5 door 4x4 since most swb have no boot space and lwb are too big.

We had two Cherokees over the years bought as cheap workhorses around the farm- can't remember how much they cost but not more than £2500 in today's money. Both had nearer 200,000 than 100,000 miles on and both were close to 300,000 miles before we passed them on. Bits fell off from time to time but you couldn't kill the engines. I know that one at least is still going strong.
