I shot a couple & left the rest & just weighed them & they are still quite plump one was 12oz & the other 12.5oz & see alot in evenings moving to feed.

J Darcy 5,871
I personally wouldn't shoot a woodcock or snipe again. Nothing against anyone who does, but i just feel great admiration for these small waders. Of late i have been finding a good number while out walking and have flushed a good number of pairs....I wish the wading gamebirds well....JD
East coast 2
We not shooting anymore this season, the ones we got all healthy birds today, na a thin one amongst them
country-kid 2
alot of the guns on the shoot im on dont like to shoot woodcock and often leave them or pick off the odd one if they are a challenging high shot
country-kid 2
how many days has there to be before the ban?because theres a similar one for ducks isnt there!
J Darcy 5,871
I found a starved, frozen snipe last year in the heavy frosts and i felt nothing but sorrow for the little bird. Its chest bone was like a razor and obviously the area it fed were rock solid. I wish i could have found it earlier when it was still clinging onto life then i would have gotten it through the bad weather.....Woodcock have a bit more of a chance as they are a little bigger and there is a little more shelter in the woodland...the longer i live the more i marvel at nature and wonder how on earth do our birds and mammals make it through the winters.... HUnter_zero 58
Has anyone noticed an increase in woodcock this season? Certainly is more this year. Four birds for two outings which is good for one man and his gun Seen far more than I could shoot. John
v-max 2
been alot around here in cumbria but not that many today! you do realize there is a woodcock ban and shouldnt shoot them after so many days of frost! Do you refer to me?. This is the first time i have shot at game this year & as i do loads of beating/picking-up. As i said i lifted 10+ & only shot 2 to check them out as they have been fine on shots i go to they are plump woodcock all in. I must admit some looked weak & i know the diffrence from an unsporting woodcock to a sporting one as these birds are a passion of mine to shoot. I have shot for 21yrs & keeperd within quite a heavy commerical programs so have learn & seen alot of action & met many people with knowledge to pick there views & ideas to give me a wealth of knowledge dipite my age & always learning. how many days has there to be before the ban?because theres a similar one for ducks isnt there! Woodcock come under the same condition as they are a wader & the ban is for all waterfowel/snipe/woodcock & golden plover included reared duck. Im am all for the ban & think they should just bring it in on the 3rd & review it 7-days to see how it is going. I will not be shooting at waterfowel/snipe/wc or plover as of now as the ban is set for the 5th.
