  1. Well it's certainly been a while since we got out with the monkeys. I've been nursing my wife for a few weeks with a broken ankle and detatched ligament, I feel like a skivvy but she would do it for me. I got the lads down for a few hours knowing that the weather wasn't going to be too bad and the missus was tucked up with a good book. We were only going local, a couple of hedgerows that wouldn't scare the gamebirds seeing as the shoots are still running. It was such a releif to get out, it seems like an eternity since we last had a jaunt, I was ready for the fresh air too. We got to the f
  2. Fish at the aereator or near by, the barbel like a firm bottom with little silt they will live around these spinners and on all lakes these are barbel hotspots. Use bigger baits if you want to target just the barbel, ie luncheon meat. The reason the barbel are lighter in colour in lakes is that the water is far more coloured due to mainly the carp feeding in the silt. This stops the light penetrating the water and thus the pigment in the skin gets lighter, thats all it is. Barbel are quite happy to live in stillwaters and also breed in stillwaters like chub do, its just myth that they dont. I

  7. We dropped back onto the last spot we left unfinished the other day just hoping for a few to keep the keeper happy. We had taked 72 from here just a few days ago so didnt expect too much. Having said that there are always a few to be had on here, we do it every year and it still throws up big numbers the following year. With the cold and heavy snow we had experienced we knew it would be a bit of a grind, however I love ferreting in the snow, its exciting and the rabbits give themselves away with all the tracks etc. It was just going to be a half day so we had the full crew out, at least we ha

  9. It was a shock when I got a call from my mate at the chicken farm asking if we could go and have another bash after we hammered it last Christmas. I was sure that they would have been obliterated and thin on the ground but obviously not. We arrived about an hour after first light and after collaring up and giving the dogs a few minutes we set of down the grassy bank, wow this makes a change from the norm. As we were walking down we saw a few bolt into a far set and things were looking rosy. Tilly immediately started marking so we knew that we would get a few, we didn't expect the huge number
  10. Ha ha ha had a couple of days on the waggon then back to normal now,
  11. Nice to be back, don't know how long for though, the cover is already starting to come up on the hedgerows around here, so the kits wont be far behind.
  12. After sorting the weekly ferreting trip out I had a bit of a set back when I found out I had to drop my son off at the railway station. This was to shorten our day and lower the numbers, or so I thought, oh how wrong I was. We set off to a small spinney/hedgerow that we do every year, you may remember me writing about it in the past as it's really hard work. Most of the netting is done on your belly crawling under blackthorn and scrambling like a snake to get to the nets when they bolt. We don't mind it, you have to take the rough with the smooth as to say, and when the keeper asks if you wil
  13. Yes mate we will be using them more often on those tricky banks, save time and too many losses.
  14. Well it seems like a lifetime since last season, and today being the second outing of the season we were well excited. I had checked with the keeper where the game shoot would be in the next couple of days so we could avoid that area, so it was set to be a day around the res for us today. When we arrived first light we parked on the top bank and had a cuppa and a chat before putting on the collars and getting togged up. The dogs were almost as keen as us, thats how excited we were to be getting out again. The other day we just had a couple of hours to teach one of the young uns the ropes but
  15. lol......we not getting that many on the lamp either
  16. Its a natural instinct for such as rabbits to overcome, they have been almost wiped out in the past and came back with vengence. The biggest problem we may face is the price of food rising rapidly and human population increasing. It won't be long before a lot more people start thinking about cheaper alternative meat sources. I have noticed that rabbit is becoming more popular in butchers and it seems that people that have never eaten rabbit before are starting to take a peek. If it becomes a relitively cheap source of food and recognised as such (to the greenies and yuppies) then we may have a
  17. We will be out this week at some point I hope so will be starting the reports and adding videos too
  18. Well it seems pretty widespread but lets hope that it will change as the weather improves and they have a good breeding year. Its always the case that when big numbers are about disease will thin them out, same with humans so look forward to an epidemic or a war soon. I can't see the buzzards making any difference there are hundreds around here and I have never seen one take a live rabbit yet. I sometimes leave the odd dead one for them in fields nice to see them.
  19. Well they always seem to bounce back so I am hoping this will be the case. I am definately going to leave some areas this season to give them a chance to recover, the keeper will be ok with this I am sure as he knows we do a good job for him. Other areas unfortunately will have to be done, we have to tread that fine line between doing the right thing for the farmer and preservation, trouble is if we dont do it they will get someone else to do the job.
