Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Nice one mate ,Ive been trying to get that image up all afternoon . Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Shot it yesterday evening .I was asked to check on a patch of young trees as there had been a complaint of extensive fraying to young aspens .Walked into the wind to a spot overlooking these plantings and expected to see a young buck ,new to the area .I spied the back of a roe ,head pushed into the hedge and obviously a buck by the shape of the white ass patch .It was not the young buck but a mature one judging by the heavy hind quarters .The head gear was not on show at that time so I waited .A doe pranced out of the hedge which took the attention of the buck and he reversed to take a look .Took me awhile to realise what I was seeing then I slid back to radio the keeper.I described it and he said he would come up and see for himself. In the meantime I was to take the shot if it presented itself .The time was 10.04pm when the buck eventually turned broad side on.I was about 80yds away and above the buck so put the cross hairs slightly below the shoulder and squeezed off the 243. The buck ran as if untouched for 30yds or so then fell as if poleaxed .Before the echo had stopped the radio crackled and a voice unknown to me enquired as to whether or not I had him .It was the gaffer who had come to see this strange head. The beast was heavy and well muscled. The grallock was done in the lights of the hilux with gaffer giving me and the keeper hints on the job It was noticeable that the buck never had any testes.I had to support the head on the way back to the game larder as the gaffer didnt want the head damaged at all .Writing this a day later I have learnt that the gaffer was pretty annoyed that I shot it as european guests would of paid £3000 for the chance of a peruque or moossy head as the keeper called it ..Fair bit of excitement about it as its the first to be recorded on the estate for 10 years .The head will be weighed tommorrow so keep you informed . Squirrel_Basher 17,102
The head weighed in at 7kg today which, as the average head and antlers weighs 2kg, was a lump of growth.Apparently ,the lack of testes is what causes this growth in antler and velvet as all the testosterone goes into producing the head set and not sex drive . The head is being sent to a taxidermist as they were worried it would deteriorate rapidly as theres blood vessels all over it.The thing is rather gross to be honest and I think I did the beast a favour by culling it . I will try to put up another pic from a different angle but not very good at it .Keeps refusing the format from imageshack .Any suggestions? Quote Link to post
