Hi irish lassie,

 

I think its a female St. Mark's fly. Kay had a photo of one a few days ago, but think hers was male.

Its in the midge family, and there two other species that are similar, but from the front legs, looks like a St. Mark's.

I think you're spot on there, steph - St Mark's it looks like - pic below for comparison

great thanks lads i'll have to be sure to shake the washing well so stop these lads getting into the house dont like the look of them at all.. i did let this one go outside but it didnt fly away and a few minutes later my 2 year old came in looking right proud of himself and says "now mum i stood on him " oops
