hi i was thinking of getting a pup i already have a saluki greyhound, but i have a worry. my dog lives in the house and although he works he is as spoilt as f*** he does not like me fussing any other dogs unless he knows them he gets real pissy my worry is that as soon as my back is turned he`ll seriously hurt or kill the pup he`s a big dog and kills everyhing he catches before you get it to hand am i being paranoid or have dogs killed pups out of jealousy. your experiences would be a great help thanks

Not sure here. I have a 11 week old pup now, and the labrador knows its a pup. she trods carfeully around it even if it is annoying the feck out of her.

If she gets too pissed off she will turn, bark and snap. But doesnt bite the pup.

Just a little piece of help. Im sure the more experienced lads will give you a lot more advice :good:

thanks for your reply, i think the reason no one is voicing an opinion is that it is possible that a dog may harm a pup out of jealousy and no one wants to risk saying it`ll be ok incase it`s not has anyone heard of a pup being harmed?

I was worried about the same thing, but got a new pup in January with no problems, I do have two others beyond the jealous one, so that may help, but all three older dogs who are a bit spoilt and don't like sharing me simply love the pup, they are very gentle with her, and in fact spoil her themselves. I would have thought it would be ok. Older dogs are generally very tollerant of pups, even where they wouldn't be of older dogs.

As long as they sort there pack order out, you should be ok, seems the saluki cross will prob hold its place in the pack, and accept the less dominant pup.

You can do a few things to instill the correct pack order, like feeding the older dog first, putting the older dogs lead on first, putting the older dog in the car first ext.

Ive got 2 dominant lurchers, dont like other older dogs, but they are either tolerant or extrememly gentle and protective with pups...anyones pups.

Dont be too quick to break up any squabbles with your dogs as they mature. You hear lots of horror stories about lurchers killing each other but imo its quite rare. Most dominance fights are all spit and action with little if any harm done, they will establish pecking order quicker if not split up and belted everytime they fight.

So do i ;) No aggression at all is allowed in my abode :) I recently called off ALL of my dogs with one word when they all attacked the farmers husky (a long story)....could you do that with 5 dogs?

But i also know the difference between a serious fight and a dominace squabble...read my post again.

I also agree with the 1st part of your post.

My dog lurcher is a sod, will attack any dog running at the bitches. Normal meetings with other dogs when they are not chasing them, he acts dominant (tail up etc) but other than this he is fine.

All of the bitches are good, they do the bitch snap thing when another dog is sniffing their pasta shells though :D

The attack with the farmers dog.....it is a big nasty bitch, she has already bitten me once and comes to the gate acting aggressive with my dogs. The morning after the ferrets arrived here i let the dogs out of the door for their 1st wee, they go screaming out of the door around the cottage side to the garden (looking for cats :icon_redface: ) this morning the screaming didnt stop and i heard fighting. The husky had gotten into the garden after the furts, and it seems my dogs ran into her :o ....the husky ran to the gate begging to be let out  No harm was done thank god, and the farmer just said "it will hopefully teach her a lesson"
