Field Target / HFT Fiasco

Something I'd like to share and would be interested in your views.

Recently, and just for a change, I tried out HFT (Hunter Field Target) shooting.

As I'm essentually a nice guy I won't name the club cause what I'm going to write would get me shot and not the 38mm half obscured target at 38 yards (partially elevated to boot) .

Used to shooting with "normal folk", I found their obsession with what "gear" and clothing you use, the cost of your "gear", and abiding by the "Rules", a little too much.

When asked "what my favorite position was", I started to chuckle, no 'can' that, I roared!

The conversastion deteriated from that point on but I did manage to save my life and "entered the firing zone".

Love these expressions, truely I do, sort of gives you a warm fuzzy feeling knowing finally what a plate is used for and all that.

The Course was all knockover but as money was a bit tight they were usually diamond shaped black steel with lovely flouresent circles to aim at. The targets were 15mm-45mm in size (no one could explain to me why the targets were in mm and the ranges in yards) one at 8 yards (I threw the pellet at that one) the furthest was claimed to be 45 yards away. My idea of painting the targets like rabbits and the kill zones the same colour was not well received!

I shot my 3 prone shots (all clean hits) , 4 standing(1 clean hit and two 'twangs off the metalwork) , and as for kneeling, I just couldn't get it right "as per the rule book" as I'm partially disabled. So what was my final score. Rubbish!!!!! :sick:

Now I don't know about you but when I'm hunting FOR REAL I don't stand like a lemon when I can either lie down or sit. I support my rifle and use stealth to approach game. It's something to do with wanting a safe clean kill of what is hopefully going into my stew pot. I did however learn a lot about fashion and the range of GUCCI CAMO clothing was a wonder to see.

I'm now officially off the Christmas Card list of a couple of hundred people but who cares.

I went to see if I could learn anything useful and came away thinking that a couple of hours plinking in the back field was infinitly better than poncing round shooting steel with a bunch of idiots!

Thats FT target shooting for you. i went to one once and they all scoffed at bsa lightning and cheap scope and said it wasnt "fit" for FT shooting. they all had top notch PCP's with scopes as long as your arm!

...and people wonder why we take the p*ss out of target shooters on here!

Oh well camies, you have had an experience, even if you didn't think much of it! I thought the targets were rabbit/ crow etc silhouettes anyway, not just steel plates! I used to do a bit of field target (years before HFT was coined) and I used a .22 Webley Vulcan, that sort of real hunting gun was what was used then. Also, we were clad in jeans and sweaters, never had a target run off due to no cammo!!

Don't you lot realise that the more cash you've got to throw at your 'gear', the better shot you are?!!? How can you possibly do a piece of pressed steel justice without having a couple of grands worth of 'gear'??

 

Shame on you all!!!!!

 

P.S. Don't forget to weigh all your pellets. Oh yes......

my local club i find very freindly and full of commoners like me we all have a laugth, i find it quite good fun rather than poping paper targets on my own in the field once a week with noone but myself to talk to
