Raptor control

I put this in the falconry section but didnt get much back what do use think bout it?There seems to be a growing concern within the shooting community that raptors are getting alot more numerous than ever before and are getting blamed for the drop in some species like lapwings, plover, grouse etc. Should there be some sort law allowing the control of the apex predator?

if it was legal to do so yes but now theres no way you can control them

if any one says to the contuary there full of shit... as nice as they are to see, there now in plague proportions in some / most areas and are having a detrimental effect on wildlife and the ability of some trades to do there jobs properly.... it a long time coming

well in that case they should be the shoot im a member of lost all of our birds due to gos hawks and buzzards they do need controling

I agree i mean they are nice to see an even want to take up falconry one day but at the same time when other species start geting affected its time to act i think no1 moans when a fox gets killed!!

can you imagine the reaction of the public if bop were shot,game birds are reared in there umteen thousands down here,in late summer you see them splattered all over the roads in thier hundreds,the keepers dont dog them in like they used to,its just release ,feed ,and shoot,the end result is a dead pheasant that no one wants,joe public will pick a sparrowhawk over a pheasant any day of the week and if people are allowed to shoot them,those trades wont have to worry about doing there jobs properly,they wont have a job. An increase in birds of prey is the price you pay to continue with large scale shoots,if the hawks have one or two so what,its not as if they are poached any more.

As its said it illegal to kill them and rightly so, we dont want to go back to the 1900s thought of "its got a hook beak therefor it must go". when i was helping with a shoot there were a shed load of buzzards about so what we did was supply the poult with lots of cover and protection and for the buzzard we would shoot a rabbit and leave it on a platform as far away from the pens as possible, a buzzard would rather scavenge than hunt ...its easier, even if poults arent hard.

What about the drop in numbers lapwings plovers garden birds and grous?

no one has suggested a return to the neadotholic days of the past where every thing is killed, but there is a happy level for every species on this earth, once there past this they start to have a snowball effect on other species... Micky you make me laugh, with answers like that you clearlly dont quite understand .... you will be telling me next (like the rspb) that certain raptors only kill earth worms and beetles...

it was not an answer it was a reply, and i do understand the problems you poultry keepers have with bop,also i will not be telling any thing about earth worms and beetles ,you know what these birds kill and so do i . About the happy level you mention,the three estates close to me will put down thirty thousand bird s this year plus partridges, how do you level that lot out ?.What i am trying to say is bop are very big down here,theres a lot of secrurity around them,they are monitered day and night,so if trigger happy guns start blasting them out the skies ,the shit will hit fan as i said ,i do understand the problem ,but what is the solution ,egg pierceing,reloaction,what would you do?

ok fair enough not quite sure how it would be best done.. i see what your getting at with big commercial shoots but there numbers are normally at a decent level come feb, these also get supplimentary food stuffs so dont have that much effect on other species if levels are too high, apart from attracting stuff further up the food chain us mear mortals and our opinions are not going to be heard over orgs like the rspb..... who knows time will tell

It amazes me how the rspb cant even acknowledge the fact that sum species of birds are in rapid decline due to over predation from raptors its a shame these things come to that and i guess we are to blame somwhere down the line

Its moggys and maggys that top the birds ,they want sorting out first,modern farming methods dont help either.

i only have my own experience and i've never set foot upon a grouse moor and so was only speaking from what worked for me. agreed we lost a few but it happens.
