just wondering if any of you helpful lot have ever had a lurcher that has had to have a toe removed?

there s a small possibility 1 of mine might have to have an inside front toe removed and was wondering how much this will affect perfomance, my vet says he should be fine if i choose to go ahead with the op, any advice would be great.

cheers, matt

inside? do you mean the middle toes or 4th toe?

a mates dog has 1 of the middle toes missing but he still does the ob for him, but i think the 4th toe would affect the turning to one way (inside left removed difficult turning right and vice versa)

its the inside toe on front left foot mate. he not a coursing dog, just a mooching dog really and a bit of lamping, but i can see what you mean with the turning, this was 1 of my concerns, but the vet says he should be ok....the vet i use also attends the local greyound track and services a few racing kennels in my area, cheers for the reply!

if hes god enough to be doing the greyhound kennels i think hes worth listening to, i think after a while the dog wold get used to running with less turning ability and almost change his style of running to compensate, that is if the dogs intelligent enough to do that (mine wouldnt be lol)

the reason i ask the question is, he knocked his a toe a while back and it seems to have set slightly wrong, the vet also said he may just get used to running with slightly wonky toe.....the main thing is i have time on my side due to it being the end of the season, so got all summer to see how he goes!

oh, and intelligence isnt somthing this particular dog is blessed with!

cheers, matt

so it isnt definite that the toe will be removed? if not id let the dog have some runs this summer just to see whether he knocks it up again and if so see if it can be treated, like joe said removal as a last resort.

yes lads i agree, the removal is a last resort, he will be given every chance to get used to it.....in normal life he isnt affected, but as we all know working dogs take a bit more punishment, especially on the feet and toes. hopfully he will adjust and i will stop being paranoid about having a 3 legged lurcher...lol

cheers for replies fellas, matt

Ive had a dog that had a toe off when she was 8 years old, took it 8 weeks to heal, and I saw no differnce what so ever in her running or killing..a toe off is no big deal, a jumped to that wont heal is
