Hi,

I shoot Rabbits with a 17 HMR usually at night with a lamp.

I was wondering how often is too often. Is it possible to shoot too frequently? At the moment I shoot an area once maybe twice every couple of weeks. I would like to shoot more but don’t want to over do it.

How often do you go out and what would be too much?

Cheers

Well........6 of us do approx 2000 acre x 3 , on a monthly cycle, so every 3 month, we get back to where we started..

We whack approx 400/600 a month on weekly visits ( 2-4 days/nights a week ) with lamp , ferrets & shotgun afternoons !!

18 farms & 5 golf courses, as we are reliable & word of mouth gets us permission & the job done!

& there still breeding like Asians :D:blink:;)

well i usually get better results if i go for two nites in a row then leave it for three weeks

tricky question that, one that i'm sure will have many different answers.

Personally I go to each farm once a week.

I've found that over lamping make the rabbits lampshy, the first flash of a light will empty the whole field within seconds and they wont come out for 20-30 mins!

But every location is different and trial and error may be the best approch

Happy hunting!

The whole tone of this says "sport" shooter...so go as often as you want...with vermin control you hit hard and do your best to bring numbers down to manageable levels asap!!

Areas that are lamped regular the rabbits can become very lamp shy. so you have to look at other methods of control theres a few fields I visit that have large numbers of rabbits one hint of a lamp and their gone... Snaring/Trapping is very effective at controlling numbers as well as night vision for the isolated areas with high numbers in...

Thanks for the replies.

The area I shot is about 60 acres, the rest of the farm is Rabbit free. When we first started farming it I went more often, it’s just now the Rabbits are becoming lamp shy so I didn’t know if less often would be more affective. From the replies it seems a couple if times a weeks will be ok. I usually get between 5 and 10 a night so I will keep at em.

Cheers guys

As deker intimated, it's about wether you are shooting for sport, ie, you have blagged a farm or 2 and are happy with the shooting, so do not want to over shoot it, OR,

You have vermin control over an area so have to make an impact, becouse if you don't, someone else will be on there next week.

Generally shoot as many as you can, when it gets harder, give it a month, they breed like rabbits you know? :whistling:
