nrat 8
how many people use tramel nets?? do you find them better than ordinary long nets ?? or to easily tangled to bother with?? do they justify the extra cash they cost?? ie in terms of effectivness, what do you think? i use a scooby doo 6z ordinary net while ferreting to good effect Quote Link to post
mole catcher 1
My own opinion on them as im sure you know is this, they are offering a solution to a problem that isnt realy there. OR to put it another way, why fix something that isnt broken. I have used them and to be honest i dont thik they work ny better than a single walled net as long as that net is set correctly. nrat 8
Whats your opinion on the Trammels nrat as iam sure you have seen them worked on a few occasions whilst filming the Ferret Man... Regards.. In my opinion there not all there cracked up to be,while i personally have never used them my observations while filming are, they tend to pick up far more rubbish [ie twigs stalks and debri] than standard long nets,i have filmed rabbits bouncing of them despite the three layers of netting, and if rabbits are left in them they still bite holes in them, rabbits that are well caught are a bugger to get out [easier if chinned] would be interested to film them in use at night?? i wouldnt mind a 25yd net to film as a stop net,all my nets are 4z and 6z basket nets [b*****d nets when i dropped the basket and they tangled ]all the best jim Quote Link to post
bigrifle 24
I dont see any benefit using Trammel nets, seen many rabbits get out, they are heavy tend to pick up more bits and take longer to clean out, I use 4z and 6z pre set in baskets, quick to set quick to clean Quote Link to post

mole catcher 1
A hemp long net will cost me roughly £.00, thats a 50yarder, that price of £ is i assume a price of a net made by oneself. Many folk just cant or dont have the time to make their own nets so go for the more afordable option of nylon ztwist nets. Im sure your aware of how many folk bawlk at the cost of a hand made net without them knowing the work that goes into one Quote Link to post
TOMO 29,223
Sorry to be a pain. I make all my nets from hemp, I have 4 x 50 yrds daytime nets, 2 x 50 yrds night time nets which are a lighter hemp. 4x 30 yrds and 4 x 15 yrds plus 100 purse nets. I also have 2 trammel nets 25 yrds long. All my lines are cotton, so unlike nylon on nylon which slides like no ones buisness. hemp on cotton causes a lot more of a slower action, and stays put on a cross wind so my bagging is allways ware i want it, unlike the nylon net thats tied on to the lines and will always over ride at the point ware it is tied, the result is a tight net with no bagging and rabbits bouncing of. The only reason for the net being tied is so that when you pick it up all the bagging dose not end up down one end. Tell me, how do you over come the problem of going over ditches with the quick net system and rough ground thats uneven, surley you must have to go back over the net and pin down were its high. Not so quick after all. With my nets I can place the net, bagging, pegs exactly were I need it, no quick net system can predict hollows in the ground, highs or just the nature of ware you might be ferreting next.Trammel nets. great bit of kit if used correctly and made the right way and believe me their is an art to putting one together. I use mine all the time with no problems. I could go on for ages and i will if any one wants me to. Im up for total discussion on this subject. There is a chap called Mick Mansbridge who is an authority on nets, he has tried everything going over the years, hes made nets from nylon, but had to revert to hemp because nylon could not compare to hemp when used on a day in day out basis. The only solution that nylon affords, is that you can buy it cheap, or is it. A hemp long net will cost me roughly £.00, thats a 50yarder, how much is a quick net. bet Ive upset some people now. look forward to all replies. Sorry, is that you jim up there at the top. inresting stuff, wont upset me evry one has there preferd method but if you think uneven ground stops the setting of a quik set your very much mistaken. all you need to do is drop the next peg ever so slightly short so the bottom line sits on the ground. of course the top line will then sag. so you just loop it over the next peg , much the same as a trad net i must say though i do like the old hemp nets. i will quite happily give you £ for one Quote Link to post

akton 15
Im sure you would. £.00 as I said was what it cost me to make. £450. 00 selling price. Stop coughing now, how many spilt their tea. Just brought last nights supper up never mind my cup of tea Thats some profit margin Good luck to you mate in selling them during our financial crisis I had twins last year and brought a whippet pup, work full time and still managed to make a yrd a day, in fact i made a little more than that, 420 yrds in the year, dedication my friend and the vision. I did not say that humps and bumps stop you putting out a quick net but it is no longer a quick net system. Lets say that you have a trough or a deep gully, long grass with rabbit deep runs, you have problems, which you have to go back over the net. How do you get all them poles into tarmac or concreate or farmers tracks that are to hard to penetrate. I just use to pegs, an upside down v shape, twisted round at the top, no problem for me. You havent upset anyone on here its good to enter into a debate as long as its not spoilt and then gets heated and out of control Your net making skills certainly sounds great,do you make them commercially or just for yourself. I can appreciate the time it takes to make a hand made net, many man hours but how do you price your work ?? Quote Link to post
