top ten ferret tips for beginers

Recommended Posts

Ferreting is a dying sport with less people understanding how to ferret or giving up as soon as things go wrong.

So here is my 10 ten tips for beginners.

1. keep quiet. you will get a lot more rabbits bolting and you will have to dig less to laid up ferrets.

2. Take your time laying out your nets and try to keep the cord fairly tight so the nets purse as soon a the rabbit hits it. you will get a lot less rabbits slipping the nets this way.

3. keep down wind and if possilble out of sight when waiting for the rabbits to bolt.

4. Whistle when feeding your ferrets. this way if one goes missing in the field or lays up a few short whistles and ferret should come bounding back.

5. Know which holes have rabbits in. this can be done with a good marking dog or watching in the evening to which holes the rabbits are hanging about also look for fresh droppings.

6. Keep on the side of the farmers. close gates, walk around the edge of fields and talk to the farmers as much as possible to find out where the rabbits are causing the most damage.

7. Keep your ferret in top condition. save a rabbit for your ferrets after a hard days work, plenty of fresh water and fresh bedding, keep them out of the summer sun.

8. Count your nets out and count them back in. this way you will lose a lot less nets.

9. Never take more rabbits than you need, remember you want a constant supply and rabbits wont breed in the freezer!

10. Always have a spare net ready to replace the one you've just filled, this way you'll be ready for the next bunny bolting.

Hope this helps a little and gets people going in the right direction. This is a great sport and great for filling the pot! ;)

some good tips there, barring

9. Never take more rabbits than you need, remember you want a constant supply and rabbits wont breed in the freezer!

which then contradicts this one

6. Keep on the side of the farmers

remember, the farmer does not want a constant supply of rabbits, thats why he's asked you to ferret, I'd prefer to hit the rabbits hard, to the point that the farmer notices a difference, and then is happy to give you overall permission, and recomend you to his nieghbours/farmers as you'vre done such a good job,
