bmetson 0
I had a short meeting with a careers advisor today to talk about my CV (I thought it would be a good idea considering the way things are at the moment) and it all went well for a short while... Then it came to my interests where I had put shooting and listed some conservation-type things I have been involved in, planting new woodland on the shoot etc etc... She told me that having this on my CV would most likely result in employeers not employing me she then told me it was not an appropriate interest to list... I explained that I had listed it because of the conservation things and the responsibilities involved with using guns and the process you have to go through for SGC and FAC etc..but she still told me to remove it... If an employer is that much of an anti that they woudn't employ me because of my interests then I don't think I would want to work for them anyway ! I just wondered if this had happend to anyone else on here/ if anyone at school or uni had been told anything similar? Ben
stubby 175
they probably ar'nt anti, but consider a "boss" employing someone who own's guns, he may feel scared you'd shoot him if the job went tits up maybe, just re word it better, SGC/FAC certificatated, enjoy country pursuits etc, that way, if an interview has gone well, you can always expand verbally on your hobbies, or not, depending on job etc
bmetson 0
Maybe you're right...Although I was quite careful with the wording...I suppose it really depends on who I end up working for after my degree... I just don't want to miss any opportunities for employment but I also don't want to have to feel like what I am proud of and enjoy doing is something negative that might stop me getting a job.... Thanks for the tips though!
harrycatcat 31
Some people put things in CV's that they should'nt It may help if you leave something out if it would disadvantage you in the job market Its just a thought worth thinking about. edited to say jobs are hard to find in this climate. TIMMAY 6
Suppose it depends on the job your going for really, and whether or not it has any relavance. To be honest i've always found careers advisor terrible, have made stupid suggestions, and misinformed me. Got to ask yourself if they are so good at advising on careers why are they still a careers advisor?

littletimmy 71
Got to ask yourself if they are so good at advising on careers why are they still a careers advisor? My cv had countrysports on it and the careers advisor told me to get rid of it, you can always tell your employer what you enjoy later on. The trouble i had was at interviews, what are your hobbies .. erm football, tennis etc .. oh did you watch the match on the weekend .. eh no .. complete conversation killer
gonetoearth 5,144
DO NOT REMOVE YOU INTERESTS, AS FIRE ARM AND SHOT GUN LICENSE HOLDER THIS REPRESENTS YOU ARE A LAW ABIDING MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY, WHO HAS BEEN ENTRUSTED BY THE LAW OF THE LAND TO OWN GUNS , BE POSITIVE , ITS LIKE SAYING EVERY ONE WHO COMES OUT OF THE ARMED FORCES ARE NOT TRUST WORTHY , WHO WOULD YOU EMPLOY , THE PERSON WHO INTERESTS ARE I LIKE TO PLAY COMPUTER GAMES AND GO OUT CLUBBING , OR SOME ONE WHO HAS WORKED IN CONSERVATION IN THERE SPARE TIMEAS A VOLUNTEER, I WOULD BE ASKING THE SO CALLED CAREER'S ADVISER IS HE OR SHE ANTI AND IF SO SHE SHOULD BE IMPARTIAL AND YOU WOULD LIKE MAKE A COMPLAINT AS YOU ARE BEING VICTIMIZED
bmetson 0
Thanks for all the replies! A few of the posts have hit the nail on the head, without having shooting etc. on my CV I wouldhave very few interests! I guess I should try and just make myself sound as employable as possible and if that measn leaving out interests then I will...but then there's the law abiding good citizen post...and the idea of an anti paying for everything... but i guess it does depend on the job.. It's a while til I finish uni but I will have a think about what everyone has said, Thanks again

Or do you want to be happy? thats one of my das sayings and it makes alot of sense. That's a very good question!
