He's got a weeping wound and I wondered if I could use these anti biotics to help clear it up? They're 250 mg tablets so if it is OK to give them to the dog then how much should I give him? akton 15 Posted February 4, 2009 Report Share Posted February 4, 2009 This is what I have found about it mate Oxytetracycline works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to produce proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow, multiply and increase in numbers. Oxytetracycline therefore stops the spread of the infection and the remaining bacteria are killed by the immune system or eventually die. Oxytetracycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is active against a wide variety of bacteria. However, some strains of bacteria have developed resistance to this antibiotic, which has reduced its effectiveness for treating some types of infection. Does the wound or its exudent (stuff coming out) smell? http://www.1800petmeds.com/Tetracycline-prod10119.html Have you got enough tablets for a course of these pills or just leftovers in the cupboard? If it were me, I would go to the vet. If the wound is not a pretty sight, DIY'ing it could lead to further complications. Attack Fell Terrier 864 Posted February 4, 2009 Author Report Share Posted February 4, 2009 The dog was 9.4 Kg the last time I had him weighed which was about 3 weeks ago so I doubt his weight is much different now. Knowing that, how much would you say I give the dog? the tablets are 250mg. It's not a massive wound, but it does smell a bit and is weeping a little bit of puss. Pignut, Akton, Cheers! These tablets are 250 mg and in that link it says to give 10 mg per pound of the dogs body weight or 20 mg per kilogram of dogs body weight every 12 hours orally for dogs. Thanks for the advice. You want the wound to heal from inside out, so keep it open to push the pus out rather than let it heal over and store the pus making it worse. It will heal over once the infection has gone and there is clean skin coming up from the inside of the wound to create the scab and finally a scar. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I got them off my mates bird, who comes out in a few small spots when she's on the blob! , the doctor told her she can have a life time prescription of them but she doesn't use them. She just uses them face washes for spots which she says work better for her, so she's getting boxes of them and passing them on to me Good girl! It is not an allergic reaction, just a side-effect. Poo and pee will smell of the antibiotic too. But if the wound does not look like it is healing over the next few days, I would definitely get the animal to the vet. Broad-spectrum antibiotics are all well and good but they are not cure-alls so you may require something else and by that stage you should be looking for professional expert help having done your best. I tell you what Pignut, you should have your own hotline for this sort of stuff lol, Nah cheers mate, you've been a great help. I'm glad to say it is already healing well. It's not a massive wound but was quite deep. There's a lot less puss and although it isn't fully closed up it seems to be closing up well now. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
