Guest Countryboyo
there is no reason at all not to ferret hedges the majority of ferretting on irish soil is done along ditches as our fields are so small that rabbits rarely dig flat burrows. Get a Mk3 finder 4 25 yard long nets a small shovel a good heavy digging spade and you will be fine. Digging through roots is a piece of piss and as an extra a folding saw is also useful. How did you come to be interested in hunting as you seem to have little or no help or advice on getting started.??? Thanks lad Came to be interested in hunting from listening to the stories of old relations I had when I was a child. I was facinated by them and could have listened to them all day every day. Unfortunately they were old men and their hunting days were over so i had no experience with them and had no family or neighbours in to hunting so I made do with what I had and took my jackrussel bushing and my golden retriever lamping . this when I was about twelve years old. I also would go lamping with greyhounds with my uncle when he was bringing in his dogs. Loved the thrill of the chase and catch. I continued like this intil I was 18 then I went ferreting with a mate on a few occasions. loved it but was away in college and couldnt get my own ferrets. now im back home and I want to get the show on the road. Thanks for the advice lads. where would I be best to look for a good deal on a mk3 finder? Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Also CB if you have your ferrets a little on the fat side that will take the edge off them and make them less likely to lay up. Quote Link to post

Guest Countryboyo
If i was to give you two pieces of advice Buy Simon Whiteheads book it is the best book on ferreting I have ever read. Also if you are buying online I recommend Arthur Carter Urad. Get you MK3 there and the book gives expanded instructions on how to use it I find it hard to believe that there is not a ferretter in your area as there is one every where else. My buddy that used to ferret before he joined the army will probably head out with me a few times to get me going, when hes back that is. I know of one other lad in my area that goes ferreting but lets just say we wouldnt see eye to eye. ah il be grand once i get sorted with equipment. when would you reccomend starting up the ferreting, what month like? september? stealthy1 3,964
Will you be buying ferrets from a ferreter who can show you how to go on, or are you going to make some ferrets yourself? Quote Link to post

Seriously you can never put a date on it if its mild it may be end of september if you get frosts early different story. I more or less taugth myself to ferret but I had been working terriers and lurchers for a few years before its a learnign process and I still pick up new tricks each time I get out there. I plan to breed in the summer and will likely travel to the new game fair so perhaps I can give you a pair of kits to get you started. Nice one lad I plan on going to a few fairs this year. which fair are you talking about? they start working at around six months isnt it? i would have to buy adults if I want to work this year I spose. I would advise you never to buy an adult ferret. If you get kits this year even late ones they will be ready to start by december at the latest so long as they have the right feeding. It takes only 3 months for a ferret to attain adult weight and a lartge enclosure to build muscles will ensure a start. So they will hunt at three months? Il see you at the fair so lad if you tell me which one Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Give them a bit longer to start up if you can CB. They will do the business that early, but i've seen a few switch off through the intense kicking they get, If they are dropping in May then at the least they will be 4 months old by the end of Sept. The second season is when you really see what a ferret is made of! Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Same here, give them some time to build muscle, if you dont they just get batterd and lose their edge. Quote Link to post
