SportingShooter 0
Well folks as some of you know, I returned the favour after going over to Sounder’s in September last year, by organising a week over here for him. It’s only the second time he’s been here, so I didn’t know what he’d make of it, a blank slate really, he’d be like a sponge taking in the new surroundings at least I was hoping so! So last Sunday, I picked him up from the Airport and brought him back to me here in South Wales. We stayed here on the Sunday night, and we’re heading to the Scottish Borders in the morning! Anyway, I met him at arrivals. It was really great to see him again; nothing is the same as talking to someone face to face. The first disaster happened only five minutes later, I paid for the parking at the Airport, but somehow distracted forgot to actually take the ticket out of the machine! I had to act dumb (wasn’t hard ) and had to go and ask the guard at the barriers to let us out We headed home eventually and got back at a reasonable time, so I took him for a small tour of the place and then back home. It was a fairly uneventful out, so we said we’d go for a whip around with the .222, just to get out for an hour. We got kitted up, lamp & rifle and away to go. We lamped across the first two thirds of the farm, decent sized fields, though mucky! Which were bounded by two parallel woods which run the length of the fields up to the farm. Nothing there but Ewes and their Lambs. Which was good enough for me, I was happy not to see one, but I wanted Sounds to get a shot. We carried on and as per usual with the farms around here, you have to climb up hills! We went through a gate and over a massive hole in the ground three foot deep, I said to Sounds “Better watch that†Up the hill we went, a fairly steep field this one, its the other side of the wood. You can’t lamp it in one go without going right to the top and lamping down, anyhow, it was blank. Further up the hill, which reached a plateau on top. Large enough fields, full of Sheep again. We lamped all around and saw nothing but green eyes. We went to a better vantage point, looking down on as much of the ground as possible. Sounds said “Give a squeak there†Which I did. I squeaked once for about a minute, we lamped and didn’t see anything. I squeaked again, we lamped, there was an awfully fast body moving down a hill about 300 yards in front of us! It definitely wasn’t a sheep, Charles was about. There was a hay feeder about 100 yards down the field, we moved down to that with the lamp off, and Sounder got himself steady on it. I lamped the area again and caught a glimpse of it trying to get nearer. I squeaked again, Charles heard it, down to the gate in front of us, tried for a few seconds to get under it, and pushed it’s way through, into our plain view (or crosshair). I whispered to Sounds “Take him when you want toâ€. Five or six seconds later, Bang! The modded bullet made it’s way, followed by a very noticeable “popâ€. He was down, going nowhere, a heart/lung shot. I could still see eyes glowing, so just as a precaution, he gave him another. Lights out! Over we went to inspect him, or her as it turned out to be. A fine mature Vixen, in season too, she wasn’t carrying any sign of anything either. The first shot was lethal, the second made sure, head shot, which entered the back of the head and blew the jaw out on exit. Good brain shot. Getting on well with these V-max’s just now. Just in case there was another lurking about, we went up onto the hill the Vixen had come from, flashed around and it was blank. I whistled for a few minutes but still no show. The lamp was slowly dying at this point, so we decided to call it a night. Not forgetting to ask me “What the feck do I keep standing in or on?â€, “Mole Hills†I replied Apparently the first time he’s seen them Anyway,His first Welsh Fox, both of us happy SS & Sounder Not forgetting the picture ................................
