Shot it in and rough zeroed already so took 50 each win super X and eley subs for a proper set up after last times fiasco of loss of scope range. Gun is a Ruger 77/22, fancy laminated stock and all matt stainless action/barrel. Should have been more accurate than my last Ruger all weather. At 60 paces with the super X's the group was maybe 2" dia, acceptable as I'm not the best shot on the planet, BUT I was using a good bipod and leant against the fence. I was just a bit dissapointed and was about to clear off, I've used Winnys in all my previous soties with the rimfire. Put a magazine of Eley subs in the gun and I cound not believe the difference. 5 shots that could be covered by a penny bit, then five more that didn't leave an extra hole. WOW (for me) Put another super X in the clip and they were all over the shop in comparison. Either I've found the perfect round for the gun or the Winnys are trully crap? Im not sure ...... but I found the total opposite thing with my .22 s/a, and also I found that the eley's were becoming jammed more often after a hard nights lamping, and I put it down to excessive ammount of wax on them causing a build up of residue in the action. I would say if you have found what works for you, and your rifle, stick to it. Winchester superX for me though! Quote Link to post

Just got back from my super x / eley sub test on my field, I have to say the grouping at 50 yds they both were in or around the center of the target, the eleys were slightly lower. At 100 yds going up two mill dots I was getting three and a half inch groups at spot on height with the winnies but the Eleys were four inches lower and not grouping as well. The conclusion I came to is the winnies suit my cz .22 style and they must have more hitting power as the bump in the shoulder is slightly more and they don't drop anywhere as much as the Eleys. you have to do your own test and come up with your own conclusion, don't just slag the ones that don't suit your gun as they all behave different in other guns, cheers, Mark. But if you can't hit the target stopping power doesn't come into it. I guess if you have hundreds of bunnies to pop at missing the odd 1 is acceptable, if you only see a handfull at a time you want to hit 'em all. Having repeated my trial after scope mods the results were exactly the same, and to be honest it's the 3rd time over a good period that I've done it with 3 different guns. I thought Winchester had improved things, they are now produced in a different factory. They are better, previously you got normal, super sonic, and the ones that go "phut", all in the same block. Deker 3,478 Posted January 29, 2009 Report Share Posted January 29, 2009 Bit strange this as Winchester was always a bit of a "hunting" favourite in the 10-22, but if they have changed a bit then perhaps that has caused a problem! Eley has made good .22LR ammo for as long as I can remember (must be about 40 years back I let go my first Eley), but still more recognised as target ammo, anyway, if you want a good, sensibly priced hunting .22LR then try Magtech 40g HP Subs!!! Whilst other ammo may have gone down hill, this has certainly improved over the last few years, no suggestion it is as accurate as Eley but a massive HP, hits hard and plenty accurate enough for MOST .22LR hunting, and a LOT cheaper!! Try a box if you get a chance!! Quote Link to post

I have had plenty of Eley .22LR misfire down the club, but that too is in thousands of rounds! Just a suggestion to anyone into hunting, simply try a box of 40g HP subs and see what you think, they hit hard and peel back a treat!! Quote Link to post
