dh90 6
Started feeding my ferrets dry food about a year ago and me smallest hob has ballooned. used to be very small (smaller than my jills) but since i started given them dry hes went huge (fat). The other 3 seem fine and just eat when they are hungry usually leaving it when i first put it in but this one just seems to eat straight away. would he be likely to loose weight if i started feeding rabbit more than dry food or would i have to seperate him and feed him less til he looses some weight? John-B 4
How old is the ferret mate? Hobs are usually much bigger than the jills, try changing his diet, maybe a mix of 50% meat and 50% biscuits! also depends on the fat content of the foods you are feeding and how much exercise the ferret is getting, i've always had huge hobs, It's just the way most of them are. Kay 3,709
The dry stuff does make them fat , i stopped feeding it for this reason Quote Link to post
dh90 6
hes about 4 year old now, was fine until i gave him dry. all the other 3 have stopped the same just this one. al start feeding him more rabbit and see if that works. he still works well but you can hear him breathin now and thought it might be better if he looses a bit weight Quote Link to post

Brimmer 220
My thinking is it's the carbohydrates you get in cereal based foods, this allows the protein in the food to be converted easier, resulting in a animals packing on the weight, for little food. Feeding them mainly on meat is like the atkins diet, not a lot of carbs, it's harder to convert the proteins in the food. Allthough give them to much meat, and they'll still pack it on. He sounds like a greedy ferret, a couple of mine are the same. Quote Link to post
The one 8,594
Dry grubs handy for some folk during the summer but theres no fly's just now so i cant understand why your no feeding rabbits and getting him out working he would soon loose a bit of weight . Then put him back on the dry grub when it warms up somebody was quoting a egg cupful per ferret was ample Quote Link to post
