i got up the farm this morning just before first light and set my self up in my hide at the silage clamp to wait for the hoards of pigeon i had seen feeding there last week!

now this is where it starts to go wrong, when i built the hide yesterday afternoon i remembered how cold it had been sat on the duck boards id used to made the floor of the last hide that we put up in the same place!, so grabing arm fulls of loose straw from one of the cow sheds id packed the hide out with it to make a comfey little snipers nest for myself, perfectly placed under the power lines and thirty yards from a well used bunch of sitty trees!

so there i am sat in my nice warm hide leaning against the wall of the clamp almost rubbing my hands together at the thought of all the pigeons i was going to bag and watching a fox work the other side of the clamp for rats no more than twenty yards from where i sat!

just after dawn a crow dropped into the sitty tree infront of my and lining the crosshairs up on the top of his head i watched as the pellet hit home and with a soft aaww he tumbled through the branches to the ground, all thoughts of leaving the hide to fetch the dead bird were pushed away as two big groups of pigeons pitched into the trees about seventy yards down the field from me, so i settled back on my nice warm light coloured straw bed to wait for the birds to come in onto the power lines before dropping down onto the silage!

after about half an hour and with nothing happenig i decided it was time for a roll your own, just as i was running my tounge along the sticky i happened to glance up to see a pair of foxes out side the hide, one so close i could have poked it in the nose with my stick!!, fumbling the gun away to one side and grabbing the camera out of the bag i looked up just in time to see them making off towards the trees in front of me not giving me the chance for a photo and then the cheeky begger had the front to turn round and come trotting out of the trees with my crow firmly held in its mouth!

still i cant really begrudge them one old crow and their time will surely come soon enough!

sitting there in my nice warm dark coloured camo gear on my nice warm light coloured bed of straw i finished my smoke and sat around watching the pigeons not comming into range till ten oclock when i decided id had the best of it and that id try the yard for a bonus rat, on clambering out of the hide i startled a cock pheasant that had been feeding on the silage, he shot right across the clamp and in a cloud of feathers crashed into a load of old bale netting hanging from the fence, sorry old bird but im not fighting a squawking flapping great thing with inch long spurs to try and free you even if its a sunday, a quick pellet in the back of the head made it all a lot easier!

on checking the yard i found not rats but the farm collie, throw ball walk two feet, throw ball again walk another two feet, throw ball really really hard and leg it round the back of the storage barn!, wait five minutes, no sign of collie so sneekely climb over the gate and make off across the field!

as i got to the hedge line a squirrel shot up an oak tree and pausing long enough to flip me the finger dived into its drey, sod it ill lean up against this fence post have a smoke and see if you dont show your self again i thought!

sure enough id just crushed my rollie out when i saw him making his way along a branch, up goes the rifle THWACK goes the pellet and down goes the squirrel, straight into the fast flowing stream under the tree!

this one aint getting away! , within seconds im over the barbed wire fence (wedding veg intact) and doing a full on bay watch dive into the knee deep ice cold water i just managed to grab its tail as it dissapered into the pipe that carrys the stream under part of the next field and the road!
