labsnlurchers 39
If its bred well it shouldnt need much encouragement to enter. If your ferreting first time its best not to go when theres babies down the holes as it may encourage your inexperienced ferret to kill and stay in, then youll end up digging to it more often than not. If its 7/8 months ole, try it now while its cold and theres few babies about ;-)

Handle it well and when the time comes ferret a bury that you know holds lots of rabbits oh and buy a locator, also hitch up with someone to who will show you the ropes and then enjoy the sport of Kings................... good luck and good hunting
devonlad 0
As L&L has said if its been bred from working stock it should not be too much of a problem, if you have the opportunity to enter the ferret with a more experienced one it will help the youngster learn the ropes a bit quicker. Also make sure you have your jill fitted up with a locator collar, otherwise you could be in for a long wait... also let her get clear of the hole entrance before calmly picking her up to try elsewhere, nothing worse than a skulking ferret who dives back in the hole when its about to be picked up. Remember its a new experience for her, so allow her to have a bit of fun, it will pay dividends later..

labsnlurchers 39
thanks . is it best to use a line or lead , or just let her loose ? as u may gather i have not much experience . You'd be best to use a collar and locator but you can just let her loose its just you risk her not coming back and you will have no way of locating her underground. Probably your best bet would be to find someone to go out with who is experienced. We are in wales, near aberystwyth and we'd be happy for you to tag along one day but im not sure where you are based? Start another thread to ask if someone would be willing to help you get started in your area
chimp 299
it's not a written rule to use a collar and just after xmas not everyone can afford just to go out and buy one but they are worth their weight in gold , is there anyone who you can go out with who already has workers ? dont use a line as this can get tangled. if you dont use a collar and it kills the problem you face is knowing where the fert has killed ( hence a collar) but it will come out after time but you maybe waiting a while . feed a little to the fert before you go out as no one likes working on an empty stomach and take a flask and some warm socks good luck and hope all goes well
